Fella and Tyler are 16 month old boys who have been kenneled together their whole lives. They would love to share their forever home and stay together.

Fella is the more dominant of the two. His right ear has a small notch in it where he stuck it through a fence into another dog's kennel. Here are some of his pictures.

Tyleris a bit more shy. During our visit he lay on his back on Mom's lap and watched an Animal Plantet show about dogs! He warmed up to me in a fairly short time once he realized treats were involved. Here is beautiful Tyler.

Ben is a young male Basenji who was picked up as a stray in South Bend, IN.

He was turned over to BRAT when the shelter decided they didn't know the breed well enough to adopt him out. Ben is a lively, self confident young boy (about 16 months). He's people friendly. He came right up to me when I first met him at his foster home. He loved cuddling on the couch. He was lively and asked for play by thumping at us and bumping his head against us. He started to chase a couple of the cats; but backed off as soon as the cat showed he wasn't going to run. So I think he'll be OK with a dog savvy cat who won't run. Ben is learning his house manners. We think he might have been an outside dog or a kennel dog. So he has to learn how to go outside to potty. He's a smart dog, so I'm sure he'll learn quickly. Whoever adopts Ben will have to be aware of his climbing abilities. The day after his neutering, he climbed to the top of a 6 foot chainlink fence, got stuck on top, and fell off. He didn't hurt himself. And he hasn't tried it again. He isn't house or yard destructive. And, as you can see, he's a very handsome boy! If you're interested, please contact me at senjimom53@aol.com or go to BRAT (http://www.basenjirescue.org) and fill out an application, marking the area which says which dog you're interested in.

Tamu...A mature Basenji seeking a home.

Tamu is an 11 year old gentleman who had lived his entire life with the same family. He's become somewhat intolerant of the 3 year old toddler in the home. When she stepped on him, he nipped her shoulder. In addition, Mom is expecting twins. Mom and Dad are worried that the commotion brought on by the twins will increase the intolerance. So they tearfully gave him up to BRAT. His first foster home didn't work out because he and the girl Basenji in the home just couldn't get along. The same day I got the call that Tamu was going to have to be moved, I received a call from a family who lived about 15 minutes away from Tamu's foster. They offered to foster Tamu. A couple of days later, Linda and Paul called and said I should bring the adoption papers over. They wanted to keep him. Now, he's losing weight. And he's learning to leave the cats and birds in the home alone. He shakes paws, sits, downs, stays, rolls over, and plays dead. He gets lots of walks every day and has totally bonded with his new Mom and Dad. It's great when the older dogs find their forever homes!
Scooter...My Forever Home

Scooter is a "young" 10 year old boy who was turned in to a kill shelter in Bloomington, IN, by his owners. They had bought a new Dobie puppy, and Scooter wasn't willing to take back seat to this youngster. So Scooter had to go. In one week he went from the home he'd known for 10 years to a shelter to a rescue person to me to his new home. And through it all, he was a perfect gentleman. When he met his new foster Dad, he briefly leaned against my knees as I assured him he was going to be OK. Then he jumped into the new car and sat patiently in the passenger seat. My heart went out to him! That night, the foster Dad called and said he wanted to keep Scooter. Scooter had spent the evening sharing the couch and bed. So he's now in his forever home.

Brandy...Lookin' for me???

Introducing Brandy, a lovely almost 3 year old Tri girl. Brandy came into rescue when her folks divorced. Dad has to work 10-12 hours a day; and that's way too long to leave such a sociable lady alone. When crated, she screamed...not good in an apartment. And when left alone, she became destructive. She's looking for a home with a Basenji (preferably) boy companion who can keep up with her Basenji 500! I'd prefer an area within Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio. If you're interested, please contact me!

Brandy is currently sharing a home and food dishes with 6 other dogs. She's very people- and dog-oriented. There's some initial snarking when meeting new dog friends. But she soon accepts the companionship. Her crate training is also improving, especially if there's another dog there. Brandy has found her forever home in Chicago with a new Mom and Dad and older brother Andy, who shares a crate, food, and toys with his little sister!

Sampson...A Rescue Story

This is Sampson, a 10 year old rescue in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Sampson came into my life when a friend emailed me that she had seen an ad in our newspaper. The ad read, "Free to good home. 10 year old Basenji." I called the number and spoke with the owner. Sampson had been a show dog for 2 years; then was returned to his breeder. He was then given to a family in Indianapolis. He had lived with this family for 8 years. He had slept with the 10 year old daughter. Mom was remarrying; and her new family had never had dogs. She didn't have the time to integrate Sampson into the family. So he had to go!

I contacted BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transportation) and listed the information on Sampson. A family just 5 minutes from me had sent an application into BRAT for a rescue. They met Sampson, who was a perfect gentleman!

Unfortunately, the younger dog proved to be too much for Sampson. He had trouble finding a place to relax; and he grew tired of Brandy's constant invitations to play. Joe, a very good friend to Basenjis, offered to foster Sampson as long as needed until we could find his forever home. It turned out to be quicker than we thought! A few days later I got an email from Joe saying his roommate's fellow worker was interested. She was an older lady who had owned Basenjis before. It was a match made in heaven! Now, as an only furbaby, Sampson gets a couple of walks a day. And he can be a couch potato with his very own human! Recently it was discovered that Sampson has diabetes. And his Mom is ready and able to give him the meds he has to take. He's really a very, very lucky Basenji!

Pepper...His Very Own Home

Hi! I'm Pepper, a 2 year old neutered Basenji/JackRussell mix. As you can see, I'm a tri-color. My coat is longer than a Basenji's; and a bit wavy. And I have whiskers on my cheeks. I think it makes me look distinguished! I'll let the humans tell you my story.

Pepper is right when he says his whiskers make him look distinguished. But don't let the coat fool you...this guy's ALL Basenji. Right down to the thumping and a little yawn yodel. I got him from the Tippicanoe County Humane Society. He had been brought in there as a puppy with his brother when his family moved and didn't want to take them with them. They were both adopted. Then in December of 1999 he was brought back. His humans were divorcing, and neither wanted him. I got him into a wonderful foster home where his true personality came out! He got along fine with the other dogs; and LOVED the cat! He also loved the 10 year old daughter and her friends.

With a lot of help from BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transportation), I found him a new home in Virginia. And they had an 8 year old son! We transported him (fortunately, with just 2 hand-offs) to Pennsylvania, where his new family picked him up. He gave them a big yodel when he saw them! I heard from them a few days later. Pepper and Matti, their 4 year old female Basenji, were sharing chairs and beds. And Pepper was in heaven with his new kid and his friends. So now he's got his own Forever Home...what we wish we could give EVERY abandoned or abused pet.

CASSIDY This is a young dog that was found wandering in Shelbyville, IN. His front foot had been crushed, probably by a car. We called him Cassidy (as in Hop Along...). He is probably a Basenji / Shiba Inu mix. He's a great dog!
Cassidy was taken by a wonderful gentleman in Ohio who runs BEAR (Basenji Education and Rescue). He worked very hard to socialize Cassidy (who had a serious biting problem) and to heal the injured leg. Unfortunately, Cassidy developed gangrene in his leg that quickly spread. He had to be pts. Another victim of irresponsible breeding and ownership.

The following 5 dogs were advertised on Excite, an on-line classified ads page. The dogs were in LaPorte, Indiana. I contacted the owner offering help in rehoming the dogs she had advertised. She asked for our help. We visited her and she seemed quite cooperative. I had obtained an AKC record on each dog to find the breeders of the dogs. The person who sold 4 of these dogs evidently represented herself as the breeder. She was located in Floyd's Knob, Indiana. The 5th dog was purchased directly from the breeder in South Bend, Indiana. The current owner signed a transfer document (transferring ownership to BRAT) and we made arrangements to pick the dogs up in 10 days. I needed the time to contact the breeders and arrange foster homes. I called the Friday before we were to pick up the dogs on Tuesday and reminded the owner that she could not sell the dogs or give them to anyone since she had relinquished ownership. She said she understood and was ready to give them to us on Tuesday. I was gone over the weekend (she knew that). When I returned late Sunday night, I didn't have time to check my email. I did the next morning and saw an email from her. She told me she had decided the dogs should stay together (They all fought each other) and she had "given" them a a guy from out-of-state on Saturday. I called and emailed her, but never heard back from her. She had sold the dogs to another puppy miller. The little brindle girl even had her forever home ready for her. But now she and the others won't have the chance to find out how wonderful a forever home is! I can only hope that we some day get another chance to rescue these babies from the puppy mill world!

BREAKING NEWS! The lost Indiana dogs have been found living on a rescue ranch in Michigan! Napoleon and Tinkerbell are living with a couple in Michigan. Joey, Clara, and Pokie have been received at BEAR (Basenji Education And Rescue) in Ohio. They've settled in and are ready to start interviewing for new homes. Please consider these kids if you are looking for a companion. Email Charlie for more information on these dogs and other dogs available for adoption at BEAR.

Napoleon is one of 5 dogs accepted into rescue from a home in LaPorte, Indiana. He's a 5 year old red and white dog. He's very nice! He's never seen a stranger; and could easily fit into a home with a female Basenji to help him learn the B 500!

Tinkerbell is one of 5 dogs accepted into rescue from a home in LaPorte, Indiana. She's a 2 year old brindle and white female. She's very sweet; and will love keeping company with a young male. She's already been bred twice!

Clara is one of 5 dogs accepted into rescue from a home in LaPorte, Indiana. She's a 3 year old red and white girl who'd love to share a home with her daughter, Pokey, or a male companion. She's been bred at least once.

Meet Pokey, a 1 year old red and white girl who has spent her life in a kennel with her mom and a male dog. She's a little timid because she hasn't had a chance to be socialized. But she's really sweet and would love to learn how to be a cuddle bug!

Introducing Joey, a confident 1 year old who's going to need a Basenji-experienced home. He has been allowed to be pack leader in a kennel with Clara and Pokey. He'll need to learn house manners since he's been a kennel dog his whole life. But he is a beauty!
Tinkerbell, Napoleon, Clare, and Pokey have all been adopted. Joey is still working on his house manners. But he is such a wonderful dog!

Clancy is a beautiful Basenji / Vizsla mix. He's a little taller than the standard Basenji, and weighs about 35 pounds. He gets along wonderfully with the other 5 dogs (2 Basenjis, 2 Pomeranians, and a Sheepdog mix) in his foster home. And he's definitely people friendly. His foster mom says he shares a communal water and food bowl with no problems. He's housebroken and crate trained. He now likes car rides (was a little afraid at first). He'll make a wonderful companion dog to just about any household! Please consider offering him a forever home! Good news! Clancy has his forever home. A young couple in Cincinnati came to visit Clancy with their mixed female. Clancy and the girl got along beautifully. And he'll be joining his new family in October when the couple returns from their honeymoon. Clancy has joined his new family along with Deidre, a young female rat terrier who had become great friends with him at the foster home. The new family didn't want to separate them!

Here's IndyGo, an eight month old puppy found wandering the streets of a small town in Indiana. We think he might be a purebred Basenji. He's people and dog friendly. He's been neutered and is ready to go. Although we thought we had the right home in St. Louis, we think IndyGo might be better in a home with more human contact than he would get there. So, if you're looking for a great companion, please consider IndyGo (Named after the bus system in Indianapolis. We figured he'd always be on the go, like most Basenjis). IndyGo is now on his way to his new forever home in New Jersey! Thanks to this wonderful family and all the Brat and non-Brat folks who helped this wonderful young dog!

If you decide you want a puppy or kitty, remember these dogs' stories and check out your local shelter or contact a rescue organization. There are so many looking for their Forever Homes; and we can help!
