All of you Mopar fans out there know that one of the most essential pieces of a Mopar is the
engine. There were many high performance engines for 1970; two of the most legendary were the 440 "Six Pack" and the 426 Hemi.
Although our Challenger was not equipped with either of these, it still has a strong, gas guzzling Mopar engine under the hood.
This being a numbers matching 383cubic inch 2-BBL V-8. The two barrel carburetors on these engines were made by Carter. This engine was rated at 290hp and 390ft lbs of torque for 1970. It was the lowest powered version of the 383's,
the other two 383's were the 383 4-BBL and the 383 Magnum. Yet, this engine gave plenty of performance and power to satisfy the "mild" bunch of
Mopar motorists.
Exhaust/Emmissions System:
Our Challenger, being a California car, was equipped with the California Emmissions System
which reduced the amount of pollutants that came out of the exhaust. The exhaust system on this car was only a single exhaust and is the original system that has hardly any outer corrosion on the pipes.
Transmission:
The power from this 383 is transferred to the rear wheels through a TorqueFlite Automatic Transmission.
The other transmissions that were offered with this engine were a Three-Speed Manual or an optional Four-Speed Manual; they were also available for 225 and 318cubic inch 2-BBl engines.
