Kid Flash by: Bob Ryder

The independent wrestling scene is filled with wrestlers hoping to break into the bigtime. Those wrestlers work hard for little or no money in front of crowds that are sometimes embarassingly small. Their only hope is that someone will take notice and will offer them a chance in one of the major organizations. Billy Kidman is one of the success stories. Kidman debuted in 1994 and wrestled in independent promotions on the east coast as "Kid Flash." It didn't take long for people in the business to hear about the charismatic young kid that could do a Shooting Star Press.

Billy Kidman got his shot at the bigtime when he came to WCW in 1996. Kidman started out as a member of Raven's flock. He was the flock member who seemed to have a permanent itch on his face. He didn't get many wins, or even many matches, at that point in his career, but he still managed to impress with his Shooting Star Press.

It's a move that only a handful of men have tried successfully, and Kidman does it better than any of them. Kidman broke away from the flock with encouragement from Perry Saturn, also a former member. It was the best career move he ever made. Since leaving the flock, he has never looked back.

Billy Kidman quickly became a major force in the WCW Cruiserweight division, and won the title twice, beating Juventud Guerrera both times. His first title reign ran from September 14, 1998 to November 16, 1998 when Juventud beat him to win the belt back. Kidman took the belt back from Guerrera on November 22, and held it until Rey Mysterio Jr. beat him for it on March 15, 1999.

During that time, Kidman had classic matches with Mysterio, Guerrera, Mikey Whipwreck and others. Kidman and Mysterio formed a friendship based on mutual respect and formed a dynamic tag team. A tremendous series of matches against Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko culminated in a victory over Benoit and Malenko for the WCW World Tag Team Titles on March 29, 1999. Kidman and Mysterio held the belts until May 9, 1999 when Raven and Perry Saturn won the titles in a three-way match that also included Benoit and Malenko.

Kidman continues to be one of the most electrifying performers in WCW and can always be counted on to deliver one of the best matches on the show. Ask many WCW wrestlers who their favorite opponent is, and chances are they'll say Kidman. He's so good in the ring that he can lift up an opponent and can almost assure a great match. There will be more titles in Kidman's future. He's got a tremendous career ahead of himself, and he is going to be a very big star in this business.
