Lions Roar Past Buckeyes

Last game: Ohio State 25, Purdue 22

Next game: Oct. 23th - Ohio State at Minnesota

Deja vu...however the game last year in the 'Shoe had a different outcome.

#2 Penn State too much for young Buckeyes

The Buckeyes might have been fired up after a week of being ripped on by coach John Cooper. While both coaches held their teams from talking to the media, coach Cooper gave his team a little words to fire them up. However, there was not enough motivation in his words, as the Buckeyes were spanked and down right humiliated.

It was the first road game for the Buckeyes after five start at home. And for a young team, playing in the hostile environment of Happy Valley was just too overwhelming.

The Buckeyes offense could not get ANYTHING going against the Penn State defense that features Lavar Arrington. Him, and the rest of the Nittany Lion defense held the Buckeyes with no offensive touchdowns. The Buckeyes now drop to 4-3 and 1-2 in the Big Ten.

These year's Buckeyes experience growing pains

The Buckeyes gained only 143 total yards of offense against the Penn State defense. I can't remember the last time the Bucks have been held for so few yards. Of course, perhaps it's time to realize that the Buckeyes are not going to be a part of the Big Ten championship, let alone the National Championship. With a 4-3 record, the Bucks will be hard pressed to even make a bowl game. This is really hard for me, a huge Buckeye fan, to put my team down like this. But it's time to face the facts. This is a rebuilding year. Losing most of it's star players has taken its toll on the Buckeyes. But the talent is there, it will just take some time to develop. But perhaps the talent could have at least gained a few more yards...

  • Scary thought...the Buckeyes had only 65 yards on the ground. QB Steve Bellisari had 38 of those yards, while Micheal Wiley had only 18 on ten carries.

  • Remedy to above problem...GIVE WILEY THE BALL! The offense has to get the ball to Wiley. He's the only senior on a young offense. Give him the ball. Last season he averaged 20 touches a game. This season, only 14.

  • Boy, are the Bucks missing Matt Keller. Stupid ankle sprain...

  • What would Woody Hayes say if he were to witness his Buckeyes not able to gain even 100 yards?

  • He'd probably say: "GIVE WILEY THE BALL!"

  • Bellisari was 7-21 for 75 yards...

  • Bellisari was eerily similiar to Stanley Jackson...too much running...not enough pass completions.

  • Remedy...three step drop...fire the ball. Bellisari too often dropped back too many steps and got himself in trouble.

  • Big game next week...a loss to Minnesota equals no bowl game...
  • Defense plays well, needs offense to step it up

The defense stepped it up and kept the Buckeyes into the game. However the offense did not do it's job and put points on the board. The Buckeyes did not resemble the "Silver Bullets" of last season that shut down the Nittany Lions, but they did manage to stop them and keep it from becoming a blow out.

  • Credit the special teams, Na'il Diggs and Gary Berry for the Buckeye's only touchdown. Penn State was pinned deep in their territory, Diggs hammered QB Kevin Thompson into the turf and Berry recovered the fumble.

  • Note to Thompson...get some asprin for that shoulder.

  • Buckeyes special teams blocked too more field goals. This, coming a week after a blocked field goal won them the game.

  • James Cotton showed great speed when he chased down Eric McCoo early in the 1st and saved an easy TD. He could be a rising star on the Buckeye defensive line. He had 8 tackles.

  • Joe Cooper (no relation to John) also showed great promise as he had an excellent game against Penn State.

  • Plummer had an interception, Clements had 10 tackles, and Berry had 9...just in case you wanted to know.

  • Diggs vs. Arrington...who won the battle of the linebackers? Arrington had 7 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Diggs had 6 tackles and a forced fumble that lead to only Buckeye score. Diggs wins.
