Akron Yard Derailment Photos
This happened in October 1999.
The story, real quick...
Q217 had no heat in the lead units, and it was real cold. They were going down into Akron (Valley) Yard to pick up CSX 2719 to be the new lead unit.
The power (3 units) off of train Q217 was cut off the train
and they headed down the connection track to the yard.
The 2719 was sitting at the north wye switch (which is underneath the bridge) and I'm not sure which is the "real" story
But either they were coming down into the blind curve
too fast, or they actually got off of the power without
applying the brakes properly, either way, you can see the result.
It took Hulcher the whole day and a good part of the night to get this mess cleaned up.
Suprisingly enough there was no damage to the 100+ year old mainline stone arch bridge.
All units involved were repaired and returned to service.
The story from the ABJ can be read at:

Note: I obtained permission from the officials on the scene to get the close up shots
after HAZMAT was done cleaning up all the leaking fuel.
