We will start with the band's earliest singles, and work our way up to their most recent release, "Pulse". Meddle

Release Date: November 13th, 1971

Produced By: Pink Floyd

Track Listing: One Of These Days, A Pillow Of Winds, Fearless, San Tropez, Seamus, Echoes

Information: "Meddle" was recorded at EMI Studios, AIR Studios, Abbey Road, and Morgan Sound in London in January 1971, and was the first album to fully represent what Pink Floyd evolved into after David Gilmour's arrival in 1968. The highlight of the album is "Echoes", a 23 minute epic draped in lunar and aquatic imagery. We both agree that "Echoes" is without a doubt the best Pink Floyd song of all time. It is amazing, and hints at the direction the band was taking, which would lead to their best known album, "Darkside Of The Moon".

Obscured By Clouds

Release Date: June 3rd, 1972

Produced By: Pink Floyd

Track Listing: Obscured By Clouds, When You're In, Burning Bridges, The Gold It's In The..., Wot's..Uh The Deal, Mudmen, Childhood's End, Free Four, Stay, Absolutely Curtains

Darkside Of The Moon

Release Date: March 24th, 1973

Produced By: Pink Floyd

Track Listing: Speak To Me, Breathe, On The Run, Time, The Great Gig In The Sky, Money, Us And Them, Any Colour You Like, Brain Damage, Eclipse

Information: "Darkside Of The Moon" was a landmark record that turned the music world on it's ear, and turned Pink Floyd into a household name. A multitude of sound effects and barely audible spoken messages are sprinkled throughout the album, giving it a different feel than other Floyd albums. The creativity must have struck a nerve with listeners, because the album stayed on the Billboard charts for over 14 years, a record. But most important, the album saw Roger Waters using the group as a tool for his own personal views, foreshadowing conflicts that would come to a head later in the band's future.

Wish You Were Here

Release Date: September 15th, 1975

Produced By: Pink Floyd

Track Listing: Shine On You Crazy Diamond {Parts 1-5}, Welcome To The Machine, Have A Cigar, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond {Parts 6-9}.

Information: Recorded at EMI and Abbey Road Studios between January and July 1975, "Wish You Were Here" was a crucial follow-up for the band commercially and also because it was the band's first album for their new label, Columbia. The album is a "concept" album, dealing with the record industry and how it is concerned more about money than creative music making {"Welcome To The Machine"}. Roy Harper does vocals on "Have A Cigar", playing the part of a faceless suit. The remaining songs deal with the band's growing fame, and even about former lead singer Syd Barrett. The theme of disillusionment sprinkled throughout the album would later emerge full-blown on 1979's "The Wall". "Wish You Were Here" is a highly recommended album.

Animals

Release Date: January 22nd, 1977

Produced By: Pink Floyd

Track Listing: Pigs On The Wing 1, Dogs, Pigs {Three Different Ones}, Sheep, Pigs On The Wing 2.

Information: "Animals" saw Pink Floyd as musically stripped down as ever. The album was more guitar driven, and the lyrics particularly interesting. Inspired by George Orwell's novel "Animal Farm", "Animals" divided people into three categories-dogs, pigs, and sheep. The dogs are merciless opportunists, the pigs are self righteous tyrants, and the sheep are followers, being used by the dogs and pigs. This is yet another "concept" album, and is known as the "forgotten" album because of the lack of radio airplay it recieves, which is a shame.

The Wall

Release Date: November 30th, 1979

Produced By: David Gilmour, Bob Ezrin, and Roger Waters

Track Listing, Disc 1: In The Flesh?, The Thin Ice, Another Brick In The Wall Part 1, The Happiest Days Of Our Lives, Another Brick In The Wall Part 2, Mother, Goodbye Blue Sky, Empty Spaces, Young Lust, One Of My Turns, Don't Leave Me Now, Another Brick In The Wall Part 3, Goodbye Cruel World. Track Listing, Disc 2: Hey You, Is There Anybody Out There?, Nobody Home, Vera Lynn, Bring The Boys Back Home, Comfortably Numb, The Show Must Go On, In The Flesh, Run Like Hell, Waiting For The Worms, Stop, The Trial, Outside The Wall.

Information: "The Wall" was Roger Water's finest achievement in Pink Floyd. This was yet another "concept" album, this time around focusing on a rock star named Pink Floyd, who was based on Roger Waters' own experiences and tendencies he'd seen in other people. The story revolves around the fictional Floyd and his isolation behind a psycological wall, which grows as various parts of his life spin out of control. The album begins as Floyd welcomes everyone to his show {"In The Flesh?"}, then turns to childhood memories of his father's death {"Another Brick In The Wall Part 1"}, his mother {"Mother"}, his fascination and fear of sex {"Young Lust"}, and his wife abandoning him {"Don't Leave Me Now"}. By the time Disc 1 closes, the wall is built and Floyd is in the midst of a mental breakdown. On Disc 2, songs like "Is There Anybody Out There?" and "Nobody Home" reinforce Floyd's feelings of isolation. When his record company uses drugs to get him to perform {"Comfortably Numb"}, his onstage persona is transformed into a race-baiting fascist, and by "The Trial", his wall comes tumbling down. This incredible album was a smash, and to date has sold 23 million copies, making it one of the best selling albums of all time. It also inspired a film, "The Wall", released in 1982. It also marked the last time Roger Waters and David Gilmour would work as even partners.

A Collection Of Great Dance Songs

Release Date: November 23rd, 1981

Produced By: Pink Floyd, except "Money" by David Gilmour, and "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2" by Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Bob Ezrin.

Track Listing: One Of These Days, Money, Sheep, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here, Another Brick In The Wall Part 2.

Information: Essentially a "Greatest Hits" collection with a few differences. "Money" is a different version than the original, but one would have to listen closely to hear the difference between the two. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is also different than the original, with both parts joined together, much like they did on their 1974 tour.

When The Tigers Broke Free/Bring The Boys Back Home {7" single}

Release Date: July 26th, 1982

Information: This was released as a single from the motion picture "The Wall". Both tracks were written by Roger Waters. The version of "Bring The Boys Back Home" heard here is a different version from the one that appears on the "The Wall" album.

Works

Release Date: 1983

Track Listing: One Of These Days, Arnold Layne, Fearless, Brain Damage, Eclipse, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, See Emily Play, Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict, Free Four, Embryo

Information: This is essentially another "Greatest Hits" album, notable for the reemergence of "Embryo" and some different mixes, possibly from Quadrophonic masters.

The Final Cut

Release Date: March 21st, 1983

Produced By: Roger Waters, Michael Kamen, and James Guthrie.

Track Listing: The Post War Dream, Your Possible Pasts, One Of The Few, The Hero's Return, The Gunner's Dream, Paranoid Eyes, Get Your Filthy Hands Off Of My Desert,The Fletcher Memorial Home, Southampton Dock, The Final Cut, Not Now John, Two Suns In The Sunset.

Information: The album, subtitled "A Requuiem For The Post War Dream", was dedicated to Eric Fletcher Waters, Roger's father. Rick Wright's absence from the album came as a shock to many, but Pink Floyd later said that Wright left the band during the making of "The Wall" movie. His replacements were Andy Bown and Michael Kamen, who had worked for the band previously. Wright's departure from the band was never fully explained. "The Final Cut" was highly critical of Britain's involvement in the Falklands conflict and the high cost, in human terms, of war. This was Roger Water's last album with the band, as David Gilmour would take control for the bands next effort,"A Momentary Lapse Of Reason".

A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

Release Date: September 8th, 1987

Produced By: Bob Ezrin and David Gilmour

Track Listing: Signs Of Life, Learning To Fly, The Dogs Of War, One Slip, On The Turning Away,Yet Another Movie, Round And Around, A New Machine Part 1, Terminal Frost, A New Machine Part 2, Sorrow.

Delicate Sound Of Thunder

Release Date: November 22nd, 1988

Shine On

Release Date: November 9th, 1992

Track Listing: An eight-CD box set consisting of "Saucerful Of Secrets" {1968}, "Meddle" {1971}, "Darkside Of The Moon" {1973}, "Wish You Were Here" {1975}, "Animals" {1977}, "The Wall" {1979}, "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" {1987} and a bonus disc of early U.K. singles.

Information: This is an eight-CD box set of material covering the entire spectrum of the music of Pink Floyd, and with the exception of "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason", all are digitally remastered. The box was criticised by fans who had hoped for some live material and unreleased tracks. As it was, they were being asked to pay well over $100.00 for records they already owned, in order to obtain a book and the only CD appearance of some early singles. Still, the box set is a great look at the band's tremendous body of work.

The Division Bell

Release Date: March 30th, 1994

Produced By: Bob Ezrin and David Gilmour

Track Listing: Cluster One, What Do You Want From Me, Poles Apart, Marooned, A Great Day For Freedom, Wearing The Inside Out, Take It Back, Coming Back To Life, Lost For Words, High Hopes.

Information: The album's cover was designed by Storm Thorgerson, and many of the lyrics were co-written by Nick Laird-Clowes. The band followed up this release with a very successful world tour, which would be captured on 1995's "Pulse".

Pulse

Release Date: 1995

Produced By: James Guthrie and David Gilmour

Track Listing, Disc 1: Shine On You Crazy Diamond {Parts 1-5}, Astronomy Domine, What Do You Want From Me, Learning To Fly, Keep Talking, Coming Back To Life, Hey You, A Great Day For Freedom, Sorrow, High Hopes, Another Brick In The Wall Part 2. Track Listing, Disc 2: Speak To Me, Breathe, On The Run, Time, The Great Gig In The Sky, Money, Us And Them, Any Colour You Like, Brain DAmage, Eclipse, Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, Run Like Hell.

Information: Pink Floyd claim they had no intention of recording another live album, but after playing "Darkside Of The Moon" on their "Division Bell" world tour, the band was convinced to do it. The new songs and classics are professionaly played, and differ only slightly from the original versions. The original version of "Pulse" had a blinking red light in the spine of the disc, representing the "pulse". In an unrelated note, being that this is "The Darkside Of Oz" site, if you look closely into the eye on the CD cover, you can see characters from "The Wizard Of Oz"!
