Sightseeing along the Saalach River page 2 of 5
- Zell am See
- Taxenbach
- Werfen and Hallein Salt Mine
Welcome to part two of our Austria Bike Tour. This page
includes scenes from Zell am See to Hallein, Austria.
We stayed at Zell am See and St Johann im Pöngau before reaching Salzburg.
Between Werfen and Hallein we caught a train so we could tour the Salt Mine at Hallein.
In Zell am See we stopped for our morning pastry and Kaffee and Ed took some time repairing the rim tape on a wheel that gave us the only flat tire we had on the trip.

Zell am See is a beautiful resort town situated on a large lake.
We stayed in the youth hostel that was also lakeside but this is the Grand Hotel and not the hostel.

Much of the route in this farm country consisted
of narrow farm access roads that meandered through
the towns and farmhouses. It seemed that each family
tried to show off their talents with flowers that
covered the fronts of the homes and barns.
In Taxenbach we stopped for lunch at one of the Gasthof's that flew the common "Radfahrer Willkommen" flag.
This was a typical restaurant stop located along the bike route. Excellent food and a chance to meet with the other cyclists we met along the way. On the left was a father and son biking to Vienna while the woman and her two daughters were traveling to Krimml fully loaded for camping.
As we left Lend, Austria we stopped at this small waterfall. The route took the old road down in the valley and all the car traffic was on the new road above.
Outside of Lend we missed a route sign and climbed 2 miles up into the hills. It was hard going but beautiful scenery.
Here I am with the hills alive with the sound of music? Well actually one thing that really made an impression on me was the pastoral scenes and the SILENCE throughout rural Austria.
We finally realized the trail we followed was ending and we had to retrace our steps to Lend (the town in the valley).
We stayed at this lovely family owned Pension in St Johann the night of their annual town festival when tens of thousands of folks came to town to celebrate till 2 am.
The trail took us through many picturesque towns like Werfen.
In Werfen we stopped for kuchen in the town square under the watch of the Werfen Castle on top of the hill
Ed along the trail near Werfen where the mountains are in the clouds.
A rainstorm forced us to take cover and we took a train to Hallein
and toured the Hallein Salt Mine
No they didn't put us in straight jackets, were about to descend into the Hallein Salt Mine that had been in use for many centuries and gave the wealth to build a rich Salzburg
