Host of the
Get Up and Go Show Comes Home to Local Radio
Steve Hayes returned
to Portsmouth as the Operations Manager and Morning host of Mix 99.3 in
July of 1999 after 27 years of "good radio and great memories."
As a Radio child, Steve started his career at the age of 15 working for
Portsmouth "top forty" legend, WIOI. In 1972, a call from WKEE in Huntington
to work nights had Steve packing his bags and heading for West Virginia.
Over the next 27 years, Steve spent several stops in Huntington including
teaming up with Clint Mc Elroy from 1980 through 1985 for the "original
Get Up and Go Show." Other stops along the way included Daytona Beach,
ABC Radio in Houston, Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington. In 1985, Steve
was Program Director and Afternoon personality for the Flagship station
for the U.K. Wildcats, WVLK-AM in Lexington, KY.. He returned to station
consortium under the flag of HMH Broadcasting. The chain has since been
sold to Cumulus Broadcasting of Atlanta.
Steve's association with Hometown Broadcasting began in 1991 when he
went to work as manager and Morning host for WRNZ-FM in Danville, KY.
Within two years, the success of the station enabled Hometown Broadcasting
to buy the other two stations in Danville and have sole ownership of the
market. Steve's business partner and lifelong friend Rob Scheibly served
to help guide the tri-opoly to an eventual sale of WHIR-FM to Clear Channel
Communication.
