If you are keen to take to the skies, but don't fancy throwing yourself in to mid-air, you could always try hot air ballooning. I went hot air ballooning in Queensland, where I could appreciate the spectacular morning views of mist rolling off the mountains. Not so much of an adrenaline pumping adventure, ballooning is a fairly tame experience, and has the added bonus of aerial sightseeing, but beware, most balloon rides depart at dawn, so you have to get out of bed in the middle of the night. It's well worth it though, especially if you join in the traditional champagne breakfast afterwards.
Most operators will take you out for at least an hour, during which time you can be transported some distance by thermal currents. Baskets are generally designed to hold around 14 people, which was quite a few more bodies than I expected. If you are planning a romantic ride for two, ask about special deals beforehand. Watch out for landing as the basket can tip a fair bit as you bump back on to the ground.
Where to go and how much to pay:
I paid $140 (AUS) for my early morning ride, including breakfast, but prices vary dramatically from place to place, so check out prices in your area before you book. Check out hotair.com for more details of balloon rides in Australia.
For the more ambitious:
If you are feeling a little more daring, you could always follow the kiwi style bungee from your hot air balloon, for the jump of a lifetime.
