Landscape Study #3

September 30, 2005
As the title that flashes at the
beginning of this piece notes, there may be Òsome assembly
requiredÓ in this prepackaged
boat trip. As the landscape
scrolls by in dual strips,
occasionally slowing to adjust
and re-orient its direction, the viewer is invited to inspect
what it means to be sold a
particular experience (i.e., a scenic trip on the Rip Van
Winkle, a commercial touring
vessel, or a motion picture). How
much of our lives are
prepackaged, with perhaps some
assembly required, a glorified version of the HaleÕs
Tours that popped up as an early
cinematic exhibition space?
