Cabinet Refinishing Project
- (Last Updated 4/21/04)
When my Grandma Stout moved out of her house I was fortunate
enough to get this cabinet out of her basement as well as a few
other things. I was living in Albuquerque, NM at the time,
so this cabinet took a 1500 mile ride across the country in the
back of my truck. We were living in an apartment, so most
of the work was done on our balcony.
When I got the cabinet it wasn't that sturdy. It was
very old and had been through hell and back. So in order
to get it sturdy enough to use I had to totally tear the cabinet
apart. I had pieces upon pieces of wood that needed to be
stripped and sanded. Many months later I was able to put
it back together. The original bottom shelf, backings, and
drawer bottoms were rotten and needed to be replaced.
After replacing these pieces I added a divider between the
drawers and the cabinet on the bottom half. All of this
work made the cabinet very sturdy. In fact it
probably weighs almost twice as much as it did before!
After stripping and sanding I decided to finish the bottom
half first. I pulled the cabinet inside our living room on
some plastic and started priming and painting. After it
was painted I had to get some new hardware. The old stuff
was covered in paint and when I got the paint off it didn't look
very good. So I got some new stuff to add to the new look.
Next is the top half and the counter top...
