Joannes was born in Kastellaun, Rhineland, Prussia, August 21, 1842, the son of Bernhardus and Margaretha Elisabetha Claus, he died, August 17, 1921, in Milan, Erie, Ohio. John as he was later called, was a Corporal in Company B, 25th Ohio Vol. He came to the United States in 1853, with his parents and a brother and sister.
