Willsey Family Bible Records
Willsey Family Cemetery

With all the controversy surrounding the Wiltse/Willsey/Willse family, or however your family spells it, I just thought I would share a few things with everyone. First to pick apart a few items found on the internet. Please remember this is NOT my research! Will note when something is from my research.

FIRST GENERATION IN AMERICA

The Dutch Settlers Society of Albany Yearbook, 1968-1970, Volume 42, describes the first generation in America as follows:

"The first family to arrive in America from Holland was Phillippe Maton (Martin) Wiltsee in the year 1624.

Phillippe, a Protestant, fought in the battle of 1597 under Prince Maurice against the Germans and the Spainiards under Count Frederick of Herenberg. In the military records he was considered an excellent soldier and was called Phillippe Maton and Frenchman Wiltsee."

Has anyone seen these military records? If so where does one find them? Did the Dutch Society Yearbook obtain their information from Jerome Wiltse, whos work has been the greastest controversy of all surrounding the Wiltse family?

The Traceable Beginnings of Wiltz

I. Baron Alexander de Wiltz ***

b. abt 1540/1550 in regions of Wiltz, Luxemburg, or Wiltse, Netherlands.

According to some genealogists and family historians, our Wilsie family dates back to Baron Alexander de Wiltz, who can be traced back into the 1100s.

Phillippe Maton, or Martensen, has been said to be his son.(notice! has been said to be his son) and now we see Martensen added on to Phillippes name.rw (Zabriske in a New York Genealogy & Biography - Record V106.) [Harry Alford Willsie]

It's alleged (alleged? I want proof!)rw that Phillippe Maton's surname, that he was entitled to but did not use, is linked to the Baron Alexander de WILTZ.

Baron Alexander de Wiltz, died before 1648. He was Chvalier de Chemilly; Lord of Busy; Montigny; Breivey; Fleury; Provenchere; Chamiolle & Graterey. He signed a marriage contract in 13-10-1603 and married twice, according to a list of nobles written up in the Castle Museum Booklet in the town of Wiltz, Luxembourg.

His 1st Wife: Louise d' Andelot after 4.3-5.5-1630, daughter of Gaspard d'Andelot viscount de Looz & Antoinette de Rye d'Ogliani had no children.

His 2nd Wife: Barbe Francoise d'Andelot, daughter of Ferdinand d'Andelot, Anne Francoise de l'Aubespin had six children:

1. Isabelle Claire Eugenie de Wiltz Chemilly 25-4-1631 nun in Carmelite Convent in Mons, Belgium

2. Jean-Nicolas Jacques de Wiltz after 12-1-1655 Maringbruck, Germany, Count of Wiltz (1648-1655, (no children)

3. Claude Ferdinand de Chemilly after 15-2-1676 Chemilly Count of Wiltz 1655-1676 Wife: Anne Francoise de Bergh (no children)

4. Marie-Margarite de Wiltz after 15-12-1718 Countess of Wiltz 1676-1685 husband: Christophe de Custine Lord d'Auflance

5. Adrienne Henriette de Wiltz husband: Don Fernado d'illan 16-7-1660

6. Marie-Eleonore de Wiltz Chemilly, nun in Saint Waudru convent in Mons, Belgium

Children listed but no Phillippe? How can someone place Phillippe in this family? If they found the other children, where is Phillippe? Am I missing something? Do you see him listed?rw

Also on the site I found the following

Dutch naming patterns say that: is the correct name for a son of Hendrick Martense; "se" or "sen" meaning "son of". From this naming pattern, The one killed at Ft. Orange was known as, Marten Wiltse. Phillipe used the name of Phillipe Martensen, Phillipe, son of Marten.

Thought Phillippes father was Alexander?rw

Is this saying Phillipe was killed at Ft. Orange, Albany Co. New York?

If so than way below do they say he was killed at a "new settlement at Fort Swaanendael, now Lewis, Delaware where Phillippe was murdered and the boys taken captive by the Delaware Indians."

The children of Phillippe and Sophia Ter Bosch Wiltsee were: (1) Lyntje (Helen), born in Holland in 1618. She was married for the second time about 1638 to Adam Roelensten, the first Dutch schoolmaster in America. They had two children: Trntje, born 1644, and Daniel, born 1646. (2)Pierre, born in Holland in 1620. (3) HENDRICK MARTENSEN WILTSEE was born aboard ship on the Atlantic Ocean in 1623. (4) Macheljie (Mathilda) born 1625 married Andries Barentsen, (5) Martin born 1628, and (6) Maria born 1629.

Phillippe Maton (Wiltsee) and his wife Sophia Ter Bosch sailed aboard the ship NEW NETHERLAND with their son Pierre and their Daughter Lyntje.

(He is listed as having 5 children when coming to America.)rw

The following taken from my research

As far as the ship Nieu Nederlandt, the list I have found for this ship only states

Captain Cornelis May

Passengers were 30 Wallon families from Leyden, Holland, 18 of which were settled at Fort Orange, located on the west side of the Hudson River opposite Manhattan

No names mentioned

Below is the list signed by certain "Wallons and French" to emigrate to Amercia

Walloons and French, 1621

Promise of certain "Walloons and French" to emigrate to Virginia. In the centre of a large sheet of paper is written in French, "We promise my Lord Ambassador of the Most Serene King of Great Britain to go and inhabit in Virginia, a land under his Majesty's obedience, as soon as conveniently may be, and this under the conditions to be carried out in the articles we have coomunicated to the said Ambassador, and not otherwise, on the faith of which we have unanimously signed this present with our sign manual."

The signatures and the calling of each are appended in the form of a round robin, and in a outer circle the person signing states whether he is married, and the number of his children. Endorsed by Sir Dudley Carleton, "Signature of such Wallons and French as offer themselfs to goe into Verginia."

The names with an * have only signed their marks.

End of my research

The Dutch Settlers Society Yearbook (D.S.Y.B.) gives the following account:

"The ship NEW NETHERLAND arrived at the North River (Hudson River) the beginning of May, 1624. Eight men were left at New Amsterdam (New York) and the rest continued up river to Fort Orange (Albany) where they helped build a fort.

In 1626 Phillippe and his family established a home in Waalbought, Long Island. In the summer of 1632, he took his sons, Pierre and Hendrick and one servant to a new settlement at Fort Swaanendael, now Lewis, Delaware where Phillippe was murdered and the boys taken captive by the Delaware Indians.

About a year later, the boys were turned over to the Mohican Indians and taken to Canada where they remained in the custody of Jesuit Priests for seven years until they escaped.

The records of Paul Le Jeune S.J. and Anna De Noue, S.J.. Father Devoste, and Father Daniel, show the boys made their escape November 29, 1640.

In 1633, about a year after the boys were captured, their Mother and sister Lyntje returned to Holland where Sophia died in 1646."

Where are the so called records of Paul Le Jeune S.J. and Anna De Noue, S.J.?

Here Philippe and Sophia came with 2 children

Here we see Sophia and daughter Lyntje returned to Holland in 1633, yet above where children are listed we see where Lyntje married Adam Roelensten about 1638, the first Dutch schoolmaster in America. And had children in 1644 and 1646.

Did Lyntje come back? If so when?rw

After his escape from the Jesuits, Hendrick returned to New Amsterdam where he was a sailor for a time and, with his brother Pierre, visited his family in Europe. "They must have been in Copenhagen, because Hendrick's name appears in the public records as 'HENDRICK MARTENSEN VAN COPENHAGEN". He served as a soldier at Fort Orange and Wiltwyck. He went to Quebec as an interpreter for the Mohawk Indians and became a member of their tribe. He married a daughter of their cheif November 20,1658. They had one son born in 1659 named Robert Richard Wiltsee. He left his wife and son with the tribe and returned to New Amsterdam where he met and married Margaret Meyers. She was born at Fort Margaret, the Dutch Colony in Brazil. When her father died there she and her mother moved to Newtown, Long Island where Margaret Died June 26,1704."

So because he visited his family, which must have been in Copenhagen, his name appears as Hendrick Martensen Van Copenhagen! Did his name show up as Hendrick Martensen Van Copenhagen because he was born in Copenhagen, and not aboard a ship coming to Amercia. What family did he visit?rw

The following is part of my research

Now if you look at Hendrick Martensens marriage record,

10 Jan 1660: Hendrick Martenszen, j.m. Van Coppenhagen, en Margariet Meyers, Wede. Van Herman Janszen

Now a little history in Dutch language

the j.m. behind Hendricks name means - unmarried man - if Hendrick was married to this Indian woman, he lied on his marriage record. I have seen him listed many times as Hendrick Martensen Van Copenhagen, as he is listed above - Van in Dutch means from! It is not part of his name. The Wede. behind Margarets name means - widow of, so she was the widow of Herman Janszen.

Dutch Nomenclature

In a letter written from Holland to the Brooklyn "Eagle", Henry C. Murphy gave an interesting explanation of the chief characteristics of Dutch nomenclature. In the course of this letter Mr. Murphy said:

"in order to show what difficulties the peculiar system adopted in this country (Holland), and continued by the settlers in our own home, throw in the way of tracing genealogies, it is to be observed that the first of these, in point and time, was the patronymic, as it is called, by which a child took, besides his own baptismal name, that of his father, with the addition of zoon, or sen, meaning son.

To illustrate this: if a child were baptized Hendrick, and the baptismal name of his father were Jan, the child would be called Hendrick Jansen. His son, if baptized Tunis, would be called Tunis Hendricksen; and the son of the latter might be Willem, and would have the name Willem Tunisen. And so we might have the succeeding generations called successively Garret Willemsen, Marten Garretsen, Adrien Martensen, and so on through the whole calender of Christian names; or, as more frequently happened, there would be repetition, in the second, third, or fourth generation, of the name of the first; and thus, as these names were common to the whole people, there were in every community different lineages of identically the same name.

This custom, which had prevailed in Holland for centuries, was in full vouge at the time of the settlement of New Netherland. In writing the termination sen, it was frequently contracted in se, or z, or s.

There is more of this letter, it can be found in the following:

So from this Hendrick Martensen was the son of Marten, if he were the son of Philippe he would have used the name Hendrick Philippesen

To show how this pattern carried on, All of Hendricks children used the surname Hendricksen, Hendrickse, or Hendricks

Sophia Hendricksen/Hendrickse married September 10, 1679

Sophia daughter of Hendrick Martensen and Margaret Meyers

Eodem. Aug. 10 Theunis Hercxen, j.m. Van de Armen bouwerye, en Sophia Hendricks, j.d. Uyt de Esopus. 10 September

Eodem - means entry occured on the same day as the one preceeding.

j.m. - unmarried man

j.d. - unmarried woman

the first date - Aug. 10 is when they applied for marriage

the second date is marriage date

Sophias children used the surname Theunis

So when searching for them look for Theunis

Why? Because their Fathers first name was Theunis

This family also used the surname Cranckheyt in latter records

Well enough said, I guess what I am saying is before putting anything down as FACT one should try to show proof, may never be able to prove everything, but some what more proof than what I have seen on Philippe Maton being the father of Hendrick Martensen. I for one, have not put Philippe Maton and Sophia Ter Bosch into my family tree, as I have not found much PROOF as to them being the parents of Hendrick Martensen. Why was the name Wiltse/Willsey added as the surname I'm not sure. If anyone can show solid PROOF to the partenage of Hendrick Martensen, PLEASE e-mail me with the facts.

Below is my research on the Wiltse/Willsey Family

I don't have all the facts, still trying to find them, but I have tried to prove what I can on this family.

Descendants of Hendrick Martensen

Generation No. 1

1. HENDRICK2 MARTENSEN (MARTEN1) was born April 1623 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and died 1702. He married MARGRIETJE JENSEN MEYERS January 10, 1660 in Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, New York1, She died Aft. 1702.

Notes for HENDRICK MARTENSEN:

Marriage for Hendrick Martenszen Wiltse and Margariet Meyers

Records of the Reformed Dutch Church in New Amsterdam/New York - Marriages

10 Jan 1660: Hendrick Martenszen, j.m. Van Coppenhagen, en Margariet Meyers, Wede. Van Herman Janszen

Early American Immigrations

(Hendrick Martensen Wiltsee), from Copenhagen, was in New Netherland before 1660. On January 10, 1660, he married in New Amsterdam, Margaret Meyers (Meyring, Meyrinck), widow of Herman Jansen and daughter of Jan Meyrinck.

Previous to this, he may have been for some time at Esopus, as he, on August 21, 1659, deeded property at Esopus to Lukas Dircksen.Munsell, Collections on the History of … Albany, VI., p. 154.594

Shortly after his marriage he brought action, at New Amsterdam, against Herman van Borssum, demanding remuneration for damage to a canoe, which van Borssum committed by sailing against [p.250] it with his boat. At the first hearing van Borssum denied that he had done any damage. At the second hearing, the wife of Martensen appeared against him, declaring that he had stated that he would let the canoe be repaired. Van Borssum admitted this, and said he had stated this to prevent trouble. The court informed him that it was better to let the canoe be repaired than to proceed further, which would be more expensive. Van Borssum then promised he would repair the damages. The court informed Mrs. Martensen of this and "ordered her to be satisfied therewith to prevent further costs."The Records of New Amsterdam, III., pp. 147, 153.595

At the close of the year Martensen was at Esopus, or Kingston, where his daughter Sophia was baptized, December 11, 1660.R. R. Hoes, Baptismal and Marriage Register … of the old Dutch Church of Kingston.596 On May 2, 1661, he "drew a lot at Esopus: lot No. 2, and was allotted same."New York Colonial Documents, XIII., p. 195.597

He was at this time a soldier at the garrison on the Esopus.Ibid., XIII., p. 202.598 In the summer of 1663 he was in the Esopus war. He was captured by the savages and reported killed,Ibid., XIII., p. 245.599 but this proved to be a mistake, and he soon obtained his liberty.

On April 28, 1667, he signed, with other burghers of Wiltwyck, a document, stating that they had been in arms in the Brodhead mutiny, when Captain Brodhead had threatened to burn the village.Ibid., XIII., p. 414.600

In 1673 Martensen petitioned the court of New Amsterdam to render judgment in a matter, not known to us, regarding Staten Island. This court, however, referred him "to the Court at Staten Island to demand justice there from them, or otherwise to act as he thinks proper; as this Court has no connection with that of Staten Island."The Records of New Amsterdam, VII., p. 20.601

In early records, Martensen was sometimes called Wiltsee. He is the ancestor of many families bearing this name, commonly written Wiltsie. He had six sons: Martin, who was baptized in Wiltwyck, April 3, 1667; Hendrick, baptized in New Amsterdam, [p.251] November 24, 1669; Meyndert, February 11, 1672; Teunis, January 10, 1674; Jacob, March 18, 1676. They all married and had families. Their posterity is now numerous, particularly in Westchester and Dutchess Counties.Riker, Annals of Newtown, p. 372.602 Of his daughters, Sophia was baptized in 1660 (see above); Jannetje was baptized January 7, 1663. One of the sponsors at this baptism was Marten Hoffman, a Swedish Lutheran. Barbar(a) was baptized March 1, 1665.See Reference 596.603

Pieter Martensen, from Dithmarschen, arrived at New Amsterdam in 1663, on board the ship "de Roostboom," which sailed March 15, 1663. He was accompanied by his child, seven years old.Year Book of the Holland Society of New York, 1902, p. 23.604

Scandinavian Immigrants in New York, 1630-74

Before considering the status and influence of the women, a word might be said in regard to Scandinavians as soldiers. The first soldiers came to New York in 1633. But the professional soldiers were too few in number to give adequate protection to the citizens, who therefore organized themselves into private military companies. Among the Danish immigrants serving in military capacity were Ensign Nissen, distinguished for his "great diligence and vigilance"; John Ranzow, corporal; Sybrant Cornelissen, barber surgeon; also Pieter Laurenszen Kock, sergeant; Jan Laurens; Severyn Laurensen; Henririck Martensen; Jan Pietersen; Hans Rasmussen; Andries Thomassen. On the whole they seem to have had a good record, though Thomassen deserted; and Severyn Laurensen, Lance Corporal, was stripped of his arms, publicly flogged and branded because of theft.

The Dutch people had a certain naming practice when naming their children. The first children were named after their grandparents, usually the first son being named after the paternal grandfather, the second after the maternal grandfather, the first daughter being named after the maternal grandmother and the second after the paternal grandmother. Sometimes the first son was named after the maternal grandfather, but regardless, the first children were named after their grandparents, thus giving invaluable clues to the given names of the next generation.

After this, children were usually named after their aunts and uncles. There were exceptions to this naming pattern. For example, if the wife were a widow when married, the first child might be named after her deceased husband. The same held true if the husband were a widower and then the first daughter might be named after his deceased wife. Then the usual naming pattern got moved down by one. They often took turns in naming the children also, usually the husband's side first and then the wife's side. All of these naming practices depended, of course, upon the appropriate gender of the child.

Also of great value were the names of the witnesses, sponsors or Godparents, as they are sometimes called. These witnesses were members of the family, usually brothers and sisters of the parents, or else the grandparents themselves, if the child were being named after them. With this naming practice, it can be seen that the names of the witnesses play a vital role. If a man had five sons and all of the first grandsons were being named after him, it can be seen that the witnesses can place a child in the correct family by looking at how they are related. (In this case, the researcher is usually looking for members of the wife's family in the next generation down. For example, if a man had 5 grandsons named Hendrick, one would first look at which wife is listed with Hendrick. If no wife's name were given, which can happen, then the witnesses can give a clue as to which Hendrick is having a child baptized.)

These naming practices continued until about 1800, but with more conservative families, a little bit longer. Also, the Dutch records are wonderful in that they give (usually) the wife's maiden name in the baptismal and marriage records. Summarizing then, we have the following advantages given in Reformed Dutch Church records. The wife's maiden name is given. (usually) The naming practice gives us a clue as to the next generation back. Finally, the witnesses give clues as to which family we are searching.

When the Dutch came to America, the first Church organized in New Netherlands was the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam (New York City). Keep in mind that the English took over New Amsterdam in 1664 and then the Dutch took it back again for one year(1673), thus calling it New Orange. It then reverted back to English control the following year, and was named New York. All of the aforementioned records are fortunately kept in one record book. The Church was formed in 1628, but baptismal and marriage records start in 1639.

As the Dutch spread out in their settlements, new churches sprang up on Long Island, Staten Island, and along areas of the Hudson River Valley. Another church that formed was the Brooklyn Reformed Dutch Church and also the Flatbush Reformed Dutch Church on Long Island. (Flatlands) As the Dutch moved into New Jersey, the first church formed there was the Bergen Reformed Dutch Church. (now Jersey City) Churches sprang up in upper New York State, such as the Albany Reformed Dutch Church.

Anytime a church record is consulted, a certain pattern is followed, whether the record is in Dutch, or has been translated into English. In English, the pattern is the date of baptism (sometimes the date of birth also), the name of the child, the names of the parents and the names of the witnesses. If the record is kept in Dutch, the same pattern is followed, only the following words are used. Kinder = Child. Ouders = parents. Geboren = Born. Gedopt = Baptized. Getuygen = Witnesses.
