The Will of John Hamilton -- Bracken Co., Kentucky
In his Will below, John Hamilton names all five of his children, John, Edward, Samuel, David, Sarah, and Elizabeth. I descend from his second oldest son, Edward Hamilton. I believe I found John Hamilton in the 1790 census residing in Honeybrook Township, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. A John Hamilton was listed as living in Honeybrook with his wife, two daughters, and one son. Their ages match up with the ages of John's three younger children David, Sarah, and Elizabeth.
Dated August 10, 1802
In the name of God, Amen, I, John Hamilton, Sen., of the county of Bracken and State of Kentucky, am in perfect health in body and in perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God, but knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, I do make, ordain this my last Will and Testimony, that is to say principally, and first, after paying my debts, I will to my beloved wife, Elizabeth, all my lands and personal Estate during her life, and at her death, I will after making a deed to my son, John, for sixty acres adjoining William Carter’s line. The balance being one hundred and sixty acres to be equally divided in value between my son, John, and my son, Edward, and my son, Samuel, and my son, David. My son, Edward, is to take his part where Jess(?) Fields and Samuel Woods now live. My son, Samuel, is to take his part adjoining his land. My son, John, is to take his part adjoining his land, and my son, David, is to take his part between Edward’s and Samuel’s parts, to have and to hold the said lands forever.
I will that my personal estate is to be equally divided between my son, John, and my son, Edward, and my son, Samuel, and my son, David, and my daughter, Sarah, and my daughter, Elizabeth, of this my last Will and Testament.
Whereof, I set my hand and affixed my seal this tenth day pf August, Anno Domini, one thousand eight hundred and two.
John (X -- his mark) Hamilton
