Chapter One

“Kathryn, where are you going?” her father’s voice boomed.

Kathryn was from a very wealthy family. Her mother passed away when she was five, leaving her to be raised by her father. Being an only child was very hard on her. Her father was very strict, even now that she was 21 years old and a college graduate he was still trying to control her life. She never got to date at all unless her father set it up for her. It was always with a colleagues son and they were ALWAYS incredibly dull. Kathryn had always had her share of admirers. She was petite, only standing about 5’3”. She had shoulder length light brown hair with blonde and red highlights, emerald green eyes, and fair skin. She could have basically anything or anyone she wanted. What she wanted most in the world was to get away from her father.

“I’m going to meet Lonie and Jaimie.”

“I’ve told you before. I don’t want you hanging around those girls. They are beneath you and they’re nothing but trouble.”

“I’m an adult Father. I’m old enough to chose who I will and won’t hang out with.”

“As long as you’re under my roof.....”

“Then maybe I shouldn’t be under ‘your’ roof anymore.”

Kathryn walked out of her house, slamming the door behind her. She got into her red BMW and sped out of the driveway.

Jaimie sat at a table outside a small café near school, waiting for her two best friends to arrive. Across the way she spotted Lance. He was a very handsome guy with short blonde hair and intense green eyes. He was the sweetest guy she’d ever met, and he always doted on her giving her flowers and other little gifts of affection. The only problem was he was a year younger than her. She honestly didn’t see why he was so interested in her. She was about 5’6” with long naturally curly brown hair, and eyes blue like the sky. A sprinkle of freckles fell across her nose and cheeks. Lance always told her how beautiful she was, but in her own eyes she thought she was plain. He noticed her immediately and made his way over to her table. She smiled up at him as he approached her. Jaimie really did like him, but her friends teased her enough about him as it was. If she started dating him now it would just get worse.

“Good afternoon beautiful.” Lance smiled down at her.

Jaimie blushed slightly, “Hi Lance. How’s school going for you?”

“It’s a lot less interesting now that you’re gone, but at least this is my last year.”

“That’s sweet of you to say. Thank you.”

“So, what are you doing here anyway?”

“I’m meeting Lonie and Katie here. We’re going to talk about our plans for the holidays and stuff.”

“Are you going to the party tonight at Club Boca? It’s supposed to be one of the biggest parties of the year.”

“We were thinking about it.”

“Would you go with me as my date?”

Jaimie sat there in silence for a moment. She really wanted to go, yet something was still holding her back. She definitely didn’t want to be alone with him. “I tell you what. You bring two friends with you and I’ll go with you.”

“You’ve got a deal.” Lance grinned as he stood to leave.

“I was joking Lance....” Jaimie began to argue but she was cut off by Lance.

“I’ll meet you there at 8. Tell Lonie and Katie hello for me. See you tonight.”

Lance disappeared before Jaimie had a chance to say anything else. She didn’t know what she just got herself into.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Lonie jumped off the bus and ran as fast as her short legs would carry her. At only 5’1”, it always took her longer to get where she was going. She had long blonde hair and the biggest hazel eyes. She was a very beautiful girl. She just broke up with her boyfriend of the last nine months about two weeks ago. Joey was the sweetest guy she’d ever met, and so handsome. He had dark brown hair and the deepest chocolate eyes. He was always considerate and showered her with affection. She learned about two months into their relationship that he wasn’t the perfect man she thought he was. He had a terrible jealous streak. It didn’t matter how many times she told him how much she loved and wanted him only, it never stopped his jealousy. It finally came to a head when Joey saw Lonie having lunch with Mark, one of her friends from college. Joey went into a jealous rage and attacked Mark right there in the restaurant. Lonie told him then and there that their relationship was over. That was a little over two weeks ago, but she still missed Joey so much. She really did love him, but she couldn’t deal with his jealousy. She got to the café just in time to see Lance leaving the table Jaimie was sitting at. She laughed to herself. She really thought it was cute that Jaimie had an admirer like Lance. Lonie and Katie teased her constantly about him, but Lonie really thought Lance would be a good match for Jaimie. When she approached their table, Jaimie appeared to be lost in thought.

“I know you’re trying to picture Lance naked aren’t you?” Lonie joked, knowing Jaimie would get aggravated.

“You’re so funny Lonie. You’re also late.”

“I know. I’m sorry. The bus was behind schedule. Blame it on them.”

“You know I could have picked you up.”

“I know you could have but I live all the way across town. I’m not going to ask you to come get me.”

“You’re so stubborn Lonie.”

“I know, but you love me anyway.” she grinned.

Katie approached about that time.

“Sorry guys. My father was on a rampage this morning.”

“When is he not on a rampage?” Lonie asked.

“Good point. So, what have I missed?”

“I just got here about five minutes ago. Guess who I saw leaving when I arrived?”

“Who?”

“Jaimie’s adorable young admirer.”

“Ooooh, Lance was here? How sweet, the two lovers meet secretly trying to avoid her best friends prying eyes.” Katie laughed.

Jaimie didn’t think this was funny in the least. They were always teasing her about him and she was getting very tired of it. “You know it’s been over a year and a half. I would think you two could come up with something different to talk about.”

Lonie and Katie were shocked by Jaimie’s outburst. They looked at each other with wide eyes and just shrugged their shoulders. Lonie’s smile returned to her face when she spoke. “So, are we hitting this party tonight?”

“Yes we are. We’re meeting Lance and two of his friends.” Jaimie said.

“Oh we are, are we?” Katie asked incredulously.

“Yes we are. Lance asked me to go with him to the party. I told him I would if he’d bring two friends.”

“Why did you assume we’d agree to this Jaimie? We don’t know who these guys are or even if they’re cute.” Lonie protested angrily.

“Oh stop whining. They’re friends of Lance’s. You know they’ll be nice guys.”

“What if they’re not cute Jaimie? I mean personality helps, but so does cuteness.” Katie pouted.

“Oh think positive you two. We’re supposed to meet them there at 8.”

Lonie sighed heavily, “Fine we’ll go, but if this doesn’t work out you’ll owe us big time girlfriend.”

“Yeah, yeah whatever.”

“Guys, I have to get out of my father’s house. He’s driving me mad.”

“I wish I had room. You could move in with me.”

“I do too believe me.”

Lonie sat there silent as a plan formed in her mind. Jaimie and Katie stared at her strange expression on her face. Jaimie was the first to speak. “What’s going on in that head of yours Lonie?”

“I just thought of something. What if we get an apartment together?”

“Are you serious?” Katie asked.

“Totally serious. Come on. Katie you want to get out of your father’s house. I want to be where I don’t have to take the bus that’s always late wherever I need to go. Jaimie I know you have your own place, but do you really want to continue to stay in your parent’s pool house?”

Jaimie sat there for a moment in deep thought. Her parents were great people, but she really did need to get away from them for a while. She was 22 years old and a college graduate. She was never a very spontaneous person, but she decided then to take this giant leap and go for it. “I’m in. Katie?”

“You don’t have to ask me twice. Let’s start looking tomorrow.”

“We can all meet at my house and go look around some tomorrow. Is that okay with everyone?” Jaimie asked.

“Sounds like a plan to me. I can’t believe we’re going to do this. I’m getting excited already.” Lonie smiled.

“You?! I can’t wait to get away from my father.”

“Soon girl. You will soon.” Jaimie rubbed her shoulder comfortingly. “So, what plans do you have for the holidays?”

“Why don’t we start our own Christmas tradition since we’ll be on our own?” Lonie suggested.

“I like that idea. What did you have in mind?” Katie asked.

“Maybe on Christmas Eve we can throw a party. I know on Christmas Day we’ll each have to be with our families, but we could do our celebrating on Christmas Eve.”

“I love that idea Lonie.” Jaimie smiled. “So, we’ve made our own Christmas tradition, we’re getting our own place, there’s just no stopping us now!”

“I hate to break this up, but I need to get going. I have an interview at 2pm for a job. Wish me luck girls.” Lonie said as she stood to leave.

“Good luck sweetie. I hope we have a reason to celebrate tonight.” Jaimie laughed.

“Me too girl. Later.”

Lonie was gone within minutes. About ten minutes later, Katie and Jaimie went their separate ways as well. They all agreed to meet at Club Boca around 7:45 that evening.

Lance walked back to his car with a satisfied smile. He had wanted to kiss her since the day he met her and he finally got up the courage to do it. The best part of it all was she didn’t turn away and she kissed him back. Things were definitely beginning to look up for him.

Chapter Three

When Justin pulled into Katie’s driveway, he gasped at the sight of her house. It looked like a castle sitting atop a mountain.

“Damn. She’s a modern day princess.” Justin muttered to himself. He looked over at Katie who was sitting slumped over in her seat. He parked his car and went to Katie’s side to help her out. Luckily he was able to wake her up so she could walk up to the house herself. They stood on the doorstep, just smiling at each other.

“Well, I had a good time tonight. I’d like to do it again sometime.”

“That’s so sweet of you Jussin.” Katie slurred. “Give me a buzz sometime.”

Justin smiled at the sound of her slurred speech. He bent his head slowly and brushed his lips across hers. His heart began to race faster and faster with each passing moment. He slowly pulled away from her, not quite sure what she would say about what he just did. Katie had the brightest smile on her beautiful face. He laughed in relief.

“I wasn’t sure you’d like me kissing you.”

“I likes it a lot. Call me tomorrow. Night Jussin.”

“Goodnight Katie.”

As soon as Katie walked through the door she was face to face with her father.

“How dare you come home in the middle of the night intoxicated! What has gotten into you Kathryn? And I forbid you to see that...that hoodlum again, do you hear me?” her father yelled.

Katie seemed to sober up right then and there as she shook with anger, “I’ll do whatever I please. I will see him as much as I want to. You can’t boss me around anymore!” Katie yelled back before staggering up the stairs to her room.

“Kathryn you get back here this instant! I’m not finished with you.” her father’s demands fell on deaf ears. Katie slammed her bedroom door. She didn’t even bother to get undressed, she just fell face first onto her bed and passed out.

Morning came too soon for Katie. Her head pounded and her mouth was as dry as the desert. She moaned and turned over on the bed. Now she knew why she never drank before. Suddenly the memory of the fight with her father the night before popped into her head. On how she truly hated him. She was so glad that Lonie and Jaimie agreed to get an apartment together. Then she can finally get away from him. She shot upright in the bed and looked at her clock. It read 9:45am. She was supposed to be at Jaimie’s in fifteen minutes.. Katie quickly jumped into the shower. The always fashion conscious girl didn’t even bother with make-up or even fixing her hair. She threw it into a ponytail and was ready to go. Katie didn’t want to have a run in with her father again, so she decided to climb out of her window. It was the first time she’d ever snuck out of the house, and she didn’t like it at all. She kept getting pricked by the roses on the trellis that aligned the wall of her house. When she jumped down off the trellis, she landed on someone. She jumped up quickly, afraid it was her father. When she turned, she was looking into the same beautiful blue eyes she saw the night before.

“Ju..Justin! What are you doing here?” Katie exclaimed, trying to straighten her attire.

“I just thought I’d take you out for the day. Why were you climbing out of your window?”

“I had an argument with my father last night and I didn’t feel like seeing him today.”

Justin laughed, “Oookay. so you want to go somewhere with me?”

“I...”Katie was cut off when her cell phone rang. “Hello?”

“Where are you Katie? it’s 10:15am. You were supposed to be here at ten.” Jaimie said angrily.

“I know, I’m sorry. I’m on my way there now I overslept.”

“Hurry! Lonie isn’t here either.”

“Okay, I’ll be there in ten.”

“Bye.”

Katie sighed as she hung up her phone, “I’m supposed to be at Jaimie’s now. We’re going to look for an apartment today. Do you want to come with us?”

“Sure. I can drive.” Justin smiled.

They both got into his car and drove off to Jaimie’s house.

Lonie was actually ready to be at Jaimie’s house by ten. She was walking towards the door of her apartment when she heard a motorcycle pull up her driveway. When she looked out the window, she saw Josh approaching. Suddenly she remembered she was supposed to go on a trip with him. She opened the door before he had a chance to knock.

“Hey gorgeous. You ready?” Josh smiled sweetly.

“I will be in just a minute. I need to make a quick phone call. Excuse me a minute.”

Lonie grabbed her cordless phone and went into the next room so Josh couldn’t hear her. She quickly dialed Jaimie’s number.

“Lonie you better have a good excuse.” Jaimie said as soon as she answered the phone.

“Don’t be mad at me, but last night I promised Josh I’d go for a ride with him since he helped me with Joey.” Lonie tried to explain.

“Lonie...”

“I know I’m supposed to go with you and Katie, but can’t you two do it? I trust your judgement.”

Jaimie sighed heavily, ‘Fine. Katie and I will look for a place.”

“Thanks Jaim. I owe you one.”

“I won’t let you forget it either. Have fun.”

“I will. Bye.”

Lonie hung up the phone and walked back into the living room with a smile on he face. “Okay, I’m ready”

Josh smiled sexily, “Come on beautiful. The day awaits.”

Lonie climbed onto the back of Josh’s motorcycle, wrapping her arms around his waist firmly. He took her for a ride in the country where they passed huge green hills that led up to the forest. Josh drove down a narrow path, practically hidden by foliage. He finally came to a stop beside a huge lake that was hidden in the trees of the forest. Josh had laid out a large blanket where a romantic picnic was set up. Lonie couldn’t believe her eyes.

“Josh! This is the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.”

“I love this place. I found it about a year and a half ago. I come here when I need to be alone to think. Sometimes though, this place brings back painful memories.”

“Why is that?”

Josh hesitated for a moment before beginning, “About a year ago I brought my girlfriend Caroline here. We dated all through high school. I mean I really and truly loved her. I proposed to her here. She accepted and I thought we’d live happily ever after, but things changed. About a month later, she was offered a summer internship in Italy. It was a great opportunity for her so she took it. We promised to write every day and we said this wouldn’t change us or how we felt about each other. Not even a month after she left she sent me a letter saying we’ve grown apart and she was extending her stay in Italy. She broke my heart. That’s why sometimes this place is painful for me.” Josh smiled bravely at Lonie whose own eyes held unshed tears for Josh’s pain. “But I’ve moved on. She wasn’t the ‘one’ I guess.”

“I’m so sorry for your pain Josh. She didn’t deserve you. I’m sure you’ll find the right girl and you two will be together forever.” Lonie smiled encouragingly.

Josh chuckled slightly, “I hope so. Who knows, maybe I’ve already met her.”

Lonie just smiled up at him. They enjoyed the rest of their day together.

Chapter Four

A couple hours passed and the girls still hadn’t found an apartment. Jaimie threw the newspaper to the floorboard of the car angrily. She was so disappointed that they hadn’t found any prospects yet. Lance glanced over at her and noticed the frown on her pretty face. He reached over and grabbed her hand, “Don’t get upset. We’ll find an apartment that will be perfect for you guys.”

“You really think so?” Jaimie asked sadly.

“Of course I do. Just...” Lance began.

“Hey guys! Look over there.” Katie yelled from the backseat. They all looked in the direction Katie’s finger was pointing. It was a nice brownstone just a block away from Central Park. Lance parked in front of the building with the ‘For Rent’ sign in the window. They all walked up to the building manager’s door to get him to show them the apartment. It was huge. It took up the entire top floor of the building. There were five bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. There was a huge bay window that overlooked Central Park. It was a truly beautiful apartment.

“Let’s take it Jaimie. It’s perfect!” Katie exclaimed

“Katie, I know this is a beautiful apartment, but we don’t need a five bedroom apartment. I’m sure we can find a smaller, more affordable apartment.”

“Where? We’ve looked and looked and we haven’t found anything.” Katie looked at the manager. “How much is this apartment?”

“It’s $1500 a month. I would need $1000 security deposit and the first month’s rent.” Mr. Smith the manager told them.

“See, it’s perfect!” Katie grinned.

“Katie, we don’t need a place this big.” Jaimie continued to argue.

“We can get a roommate who can take one of the rooms. that will cut down expenses a lot if we can split everything four ways instead of three. We can let the last bedroom be an office or something. Come on Jaimie.”

“We can’t make this big of a decision without Lonie.”

“You know she’d love this place. Let’s get it Jaimie. Please.”

“Alright fine. You win. Where do we sign?”

About fifteen minutes later, they emerged from the brownstone. A copy of the lease was given to both Jaimie and Katie, along with another copy to give to Lonie. The manager already gave them their keys and told them they could move in anytime. Katie had happily paid him the $2500 to get them the apartment, knowing Jaimie and Lonie would give her their half back. In the car on the way back to Jaimie’s place, Katie spoke “Will you do me a huge favor Jaimie?”

“What’s that?”

“Can I stay at your place until we move into the apartment? I had a huge fight with my dad again last night. I don’t want to stay there anymore.”

“Sure. When we get back to my place why don’t you and Justin go get your things and bring them back here. While you’re gone I’ll make dinner. It’s the least I can do for Lance and Justin. Thanks for coming with us today guys.” Jaimie smiled warmly over at Lance.

“It’s no problem. I had fun hanging out with all you guys today.” Justin smiled.

“You know I love spending time with you. It doesn’t matter what we do. I just want to be with you.” Lance spoke, never taking his eyes off the road. Jaimie covered his hand with hers. Lance was a bit shocked at first, but he smiled over at her and laced his fingers with hers. When they got back to Jaimie’s, Justin and Katie left immediately to get her things while Katie knew her father was out. When they left, Jaimie went to work making diner for everyone. Lance sat across from her at the counter, watching her as she cut up the vegetables and steak to make stir-fry.

“Is my culinary techniques that interesting Lance?”

Lance laughed softly, “Sorry. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”

“I’m not uncomfortable don’t worry. I was just joking with you. Can you get the wok from the cabinet over there for me?”

Lance moved around the counter to get the wok for her. Her kitchen was so small they barely had room to move around each other. Lance turned around to hand her the wok, but when he did their heads collided.

“OW!” Jaimie yelled, grabbing her head.

“Ow! I’m so sorry Jaimie. Are you okay?”

Jaimie laughed softly, “Yeah, I’ll be okay. My head’s pretty tough.”

Lance pushed her hair back gently from her face to examine her bump. She winced a little as he gently touched it. Jaimie looked up at Lance as he examined her. His face was so serious and his eyes were filled with concern. She knew right then she really wanted to be with him. He was always so sweet and gentle with her. Jaimie knew he truly cared for her. it was so hard to find someone like him these days. She would just have to learn to accept the age difference. Jaimie reached up and gently caressed his cheek. Lance looked down at her, startled.

“You’re so sweet to me Lance. I’m thankful to have you in my life.”

“Do you really mean that Jaimie?”

“Yes I do. If....if you still want me, I’d like to give us a chance.” Jaimie looked down as she spoke, afraid of Lance’s rejection.

Lance gently lifted her chin, making her look at him. When their eyes met, all Jaimie saw was love reflecting in his eyes. He smiled down at her softly, “I love you Jaimie. Of course I want to be with you. I want to be with you always.” Before Jaimie could speak, Lance pulled her to him for a passionate kiss. Jaimie didn’t pull away, instead she pulled him closer to her, wanting to get as close to him as possible. A few moments later, Jaimie pulled away from him breathless “Slow down Lance.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to rush you.”

“No, that’s not what I meant. I enjoyed that very much, but if I don’t start cooking again it won’t be ready when Katie and Justin get back.”

“Need any help?”

“Why don’t you go put on some music. Having you in the kitchen would cause too much of a distraction.”

“That hurts. How could you say that to me?” Lance exclaimed, feigning hurt.

Jaimie laughed at him, “You’re so silly.”

“I know.” Lance grinned as he gave her another quick kiss before going to look through her CD’s for some music to play.

Chapter Five

Katie was rushing around her room, trying to get most of her things so she wouldn’t have to come back anytime soon. Justin carried each box to the car as fast as Katie filled them. Once she had everything she needed, she wrote a note to her father, and happily shut the door behind her. When Katie and Justin got back to Jaimie’s, they heard giggling coming from the kitchen. Katie and Justin tried to control their laughter as they quietly crept through the living room to where they would peek into the kitchen. Katie couldn’t believe what she saw. Lance and Jaimie were in the tiny kitchen, pretending to cook. Lance placed heated kisses along her neck and shoulders, causing Jaimie to giggle, as Marvin Gaye sang his heart out in the background. Jaimie finally turned around, wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. Katie and Justin couldn’t contain their laughter anymore. Jaimie and Lance jumped startled. Jaimie blushed bright red, but Lance just grinned widely.

“It’s not nice to eavesdrop you know.” Lance joked.

“Sorry. We just couldn’t help ourselves. So, how long has this secret relationship been going on?” Katie asked, still smiling.

“About an hour. No more questions please Katie. Besides, dinner is ready.” Jaimie answered.

Right when they were sitting down to eat, Jaimie’s phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Hey girlfriend. How did it go today?” Lonie asked.

“Hey. It went very well today. We found an apartment. We can move in anytime.”

“Really? That’s great news. Where is it?”

“It’s a penthouse in a brownstone near Central Park. It’s five bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms.”

“Five bedrooms?!? Why do we need five bedrooms?”

“That’s the same thing I thought, but Katie thinks we could get a roommate to take one of the other rooms and make the extra room an office or something.”

“That’s a good idea. I can’t wait to see it. When do you want to start moving?”

“Tomorrow?”

“That works for me. I’ll get Josh over here to help me get my things packed. I’ll call you when we get everything packed. We’ll meet at your place then follow you to the new apartment.”

“Okay, that works. How did it go today? Did you have fun?”

“Oh Jaimie! I had such a good time with Josh. He’s such a sweet, caring guy.”

“That’s good to hear. I’m glad you had a good time. Well, we were getting ready to eat dinner, so I’ll talk to you tomorrow okay?”

“Okay. Enjoy your dinner. Later girl.”

‘We will. Bye Lonie.”

Jaimie hung up her phone and took her seat beside Lance at the table. “Sorry about that guys. That was Lonie wanted to know if we found an apartment.”

“Did you guys decide to start moving tomorrow?” Katie asked.

“Yeah, is that okay with you?”

“It’s fine with me. As long as these two handsome fellas can come over to help us tomorrow too.” Katie grinned up at Justin.

“Of course we can. Just say when and we’ll be here.” Lance smiled over at Jaimie.

“Sure. No problem.” Justin agreed.

“Thanks guys. This really means a lot to us. We really appreciate it.” Jaimie said.

“You don’t have to thank us. We’re glad to help.” Justin smiled.

After they ate dinner, both girls walked their respective boyfriends to their cars. Jaimie smiled shyly at Lance as they stood at his car.

“So, I’ll see you tomorrow morning. Is 9am okay?” Lance asked.

“Perfect. Thank you again for everything Lance.”

“Stop thanking me please. I just love being able to spend time with you.”

“I do too.”

Lance leaned in close to her, gently brushing his lips across hers. Jaimie sighed and wrapped her arms around his waist pulling him to her. She slowly parted her lips, as Lance slipped his tongue into her mouth. Jaimie had never been kissed quite like this before. Her heart felt as if it was going to burst. Could she possibly be in love with Lance? She had never been in love before, so she didn’t know what to compare it to. All she knew was that she loved the feeling Lance was bringing out in her. Jaimie slowly pulled away from him with a smile on her face.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“I really don’t want to leave.” Lance gently caressed her cheek.

“I wish you could stay, but Katie is here. I don’t think right now is the right time.” Jaimie laughed.

“I know. We’ll have a chance to be together sooner or later. Either way, I know it will be worth the wait.”

“What makes you so sure?”

“There’s no way that it couldn’t be amazing. If we truly care about each other, making love joins our heart and soul not just our bodies.”

“You know you’re making it really hard for me to say good-bye to you.” Jaimie said as she ran her fingers through his short blonde locks.

“Good. that way you’ll miss me when I’m gone.” he grinned.

“Don’t push it blondie.”

“You’re so funny.”

Lance pulled her to him again for another sweet kiss.

Katie smiled when she saw Jaimie and Lance locked in a tight embrace. She was really happy for her. Katie always knew Lance wanted Jaimie. She was just happy one of her best friends was happy.

“What’s that smile for?” Justin asked.

“I’m just happy for Jaimie and Lance. They make a cute couple.”

“Yes they do.” Justin paused for a moment, “I have something I need to ask you Katie.”

“What’s that?”

“A bunch of my friends are going camping next weekend. Would you come with me? You don’t have to worry about the sleeping arrangements. One of my friends sister is going so you could share a tent with her.”

“I’d love to go. I’ve never been camping before.”

“Really? You’ll go with me?” Justin asked, surprised.

“Sure. Just let me know what time to be ready.”

“I will. I guess I’d better head out. I’ll see you in the morning. About what time?”

“About 9:30 or so. That should be a good time.”

“Okay. Well, goodnight Katie. Sweet dreams.”

“Goodnight.”

Justin bent down and gently kissed Katie’s lips. The kiss was brief, but oh so sweet. Katie and Jaimie waved to both Lance and Justin as they drove away. As they cleaned up the kitchen, they had a little ‘girl talk’.

“So, when did you and Lance finally hook up?” Katie asked.

“I told you. Right after you and Justin left to go get your things.”

“Tell me what happened. Spill it.”

Jaimie sighed heavily, knowing if she didn’t tell Katie the details she’d never leave her alone. “Last night at the club, Lance told me he wanted us to start seeing each other exclusively. I told him I’d think about it. Well today something inside just clicked and made me realize how much I really care about him. I decided to go for it.”

“Awe! I’m so happy for you girl. You guys make such a cute couple.”

“Well, thank you. What about you and Justin?”

“He invited me to go camping with him and his friends next weekend. Oh Jaimie, I never felt this way about anyone before. It was like love at first sight.” Katie giggled.

“Katie, just be careful. Don’t move too fast.”

Katie laughed, “Don’t worry about me. I’ll be okay.”

“I hope so.” Jaimie muttered to herself. “Katie you know I love you like a sister. I can’t help but worry about you. I just wish you the best.”

“I appreciate your concern, but I’ll be fine.”

Jaimie didn’t say anything else to Katie about her feelings. She just hoped her friend would really be okay.

Chapter Six

The next day, everyone pitched in to help them move. It took them all day, by the time they were finished it was 11pm.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to move at all tomorrow.” Lonie moaned as she sat down on the couch. Josh sat next to her.

“Would you like a massage?” Josh grinned suggestively at her.

She laughed good naturedly, “Maybe later.”

“I really appreciate all of you guys coming over to help us today. You’re our heroes.” Jaimie laughed.

“You’re quite welcome.” Lance smiled.

“Hey, I’m going to head out for the night. I’m beat, and I’m sure all of you are too. I’ll call you later to discuss the details of next weekend okay?” Justin smiled at Katie.

“Sure. I’ll walk you out.”

Katie and Justin went downstairs, leaving the rest alone. Lance went with Jaimie to her room to help her set up her bedroom, while Josh and Lonie sat on the couch talking. Justin held tightly onto Katie’s hand as they walked downstairs. They stood on the steps of the brownstone smiling at one another, neither saying much of anything.

“Thanks for coming over again today. I really appreciate it.” Katie smiled.

“No problem. I’m glad I could help. Besides, I got to spend all day with a beautiful girl.” he grinned.

“Scored major points with that comment.” Katie blushed. “Goodnight Justin.”

“Night Katie.” he leaned forward and kissed her lips softly. When the kiss broke, Justin smiled once more at her before she turned to go back inside. Justin smiled to himself and began to walk towards his car, suddenly he heard the sound of laughter coming from across the street. He looked and saw a guy from his old gang coming towards him.

“Well, well, well. Looks like J here is trying to make it with Miss Park Avenue herself.”

“Back off Shane. This is none of your business.” Justin glared at him.

“What did I say? Got uptight since you were with us J. You used to didn’t let things bother you.”

“Well you’re bothering me now. Just leave. You only cause trouble.”

“Tell me J. What’s the deal with this girl? You bangin’ her?”

“That’s none of your business.” Justin yelled angrily, walking towards him.

“Let’s make a friendly wager. $100 says you can’t get in her pants.”

“You disgust me.” Justin pushed him away, walking back to his car.

“What? Is Justin Timberlake afraid of losing?” Shane continued to push Justin’s buttons, knowing he’d cave.

“Fine. It’s a deal. Just get away from me Shane.”

"I’ll stay away, until I come to collect my money that is.”

Justin just rolled his eyes, got into his car and drove off. A week later, Justin picked Katie up for their camping trip. Katie had never been camping, so she packed everything she could think of. When Justin was loading her luggage in his car, he had to laugh at the amount of suitcases she had brought with her.

“Um, Katie. How much stuff did you bring for one weekend?”

“I didn’t know what I would need.” she defended herself.

“Not all this. All you need is a few change of clothes. Something a little warm to wear at night, something to sleep in, your tooth brush, your brush, basic stuff like that. Not your entire closet.” Justin laughed.

Katie lowered her head embarrassed, “Maybe I should just stay home.” Katie began to walk back into the brownstone, but Justin quickly grabbed her before she got up the steps. He wrapped his arms around her waist and held her tight. Katie refused to look at him, keeping her eyes on the ground.

“Hey,” Justin softly said, lifting her chin. “I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. I was just joking with you. I want you to come with me. If I didn’t I wouldn’t have asked you to come. Will you forgive me for being an ass and come with me anyway?”

Katie smiled slightly, “I guess so.”

Katie decided to take just one of the many suitcases she had packed, and ten minutes later they were on their way to the campground. When they got there, Justin saw everyone that was supposed to be there, except for Lisa. Justin groaned silently. He knew Katie was supposed to share a tent with her, but now he didn’t know if Katie would want to stay at all. Justin helped Katie out the car, and led her over to the camp holding her hand tight.

“What’s up Adam?” Justin smiled. “Where’s Lisa?”

“She broke her leg can you believe it. She’s so upset. She really wanted to come this weekend.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. Um, Katie was supposed to share a tent with her. What are the arrangements now?”

“Damn Timberlake you’re rude. You didn’t even introduce your beautiful girl to us yet.” Adam grinned.

“I’m sorry. Adam, Mike, Jack, this is Katie. Katie these are the guys.”

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you.” Katie smiled, shaking their hands.

“Likewise. About the sleeping arrangements, I guess the lovely Katie gets a tent to herself.”

Justin turned to her, “Are you okay with that?”

“Sure.” Katie smiled bravely trying to hide the fact she was terrified at the thought of sleeping in the woods alone.

By the time they had the tents set up and everyone was settled in, it was already dark. They built a large fire and sat around it drinking and having a good time. Not even an hour later, the guys spotted a party across the campground. Katie really didn’t feel like attending, so she and Justin stayed behind. They roasted marshmallows and talked. Suddenly Justin tried to stifle a yawn.

“Are you tired?”

“A little.” Justin sighed heavily. “I’m not looking forward to sharing a tent with a bunch of drunk men.”

Katie sat there quiet for a moment, “Well, why..why don’t you share my tent?”

Justin was a little shocked by her offer, “What?....Are you sure? I don’t want you to be uncomfortable.”

“I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t want you to. Besides, I have to admit I was a little nervous about sleeping alone in the woods.” Katie laughed.

“As long as you are sure. Thank you very much.” Justin smiled over at her.

They both lay side by side in the tent, neither able to sleep. Katie heard every noise around them. Suddenly there was a loud ‘SNAP’ heard outside and Katie jumped into Justin’s arms. He held her for a moment trying to calm her down. He softly stroked her hair, looking into her eyes. He slowly brought his lips down to hers........

Chapter Seven

Justin’s kisses became more and more passionate with each passing moment. Suddenly he broke away from Katie and looked down into her beautiful green eyes, “Are you sure?”

Katie smiled softly at him, “I’m positive.”

Justin looked down at her for another moment before bringing his lips down to hers again. Katie opened her mouth, allowing Justin’s tongue to twine with her own. He slid his hands under her nightgown, caressing her soft thighs as his hands worked their way further up her body. Katie gasped when his hand found it’s way underneath her panties. Justin immediately withdrew his hand, “I’m sorry. Do you want me to stop?”

“No.” Katie hurriedly reassured him. “Don’t stop.” Justin smiled back down at her before continuing where he left off. Every inch of her body was on fire She had never felt this much passion for anyone in her life and at that moment, she didn’t want that feeling to end. Katie’s hands began some exploring of their own. She ran her fingers all over Justin’s lean form, memorizing every muscle, every curve. She never wanted to forget this night for as long as she lived. Her hands stopped at his waist for a moment before they nervously made their way a little further. Justin moaned the moment her palm made contact with his hardness. Katie instinctively pulled away.

“No, don’t be scared Katie. You aren’t hurting me. Please don’t stop touching me.” Justin said between kisses.

Katie slowly started where she left off on her exploration, pushing the soft cotton of his boxers down his strong legs. Justin slowly removed Katie’s panties as well before positioning himself at her entrance. He quickly entered her, muffling her cries as he kissed her, trying to soothe away the pain. The pain quickly melted away and was replace by the most intense pleasure. Katie clung to Justin, slowly moving her hips to match his rhythm. Soon, they found their rhythm together, moving faster and faster, searching for their release. They fell over the edge together, before collapsing into each other’s arms completely spent. Justin lay awake a while afterwards just staring down at her as she slept in his arms. She was so incredibly beautiful and sweet. He had no idea what he did to deserve such a person in his life. All he knew is that he was thankful to have her come into his life. Justin kissed her head softly before letting sleep claim him as well.

The next morning when Katie awoke, she realized she was still in Justin’s arms. She smiled to herself and snuggled closer to him. Justin slowly opened his eyes to see Katie staring up at him. He smiled down at her and stretched beside her, “Good morning.”

“Mornin’.”

Justin looked down at her for a moment, “You aren’t disappointed about what happened last night are you?”

“No Justin. Last night was incredible. I never imagined it would be that wonderful.”

“I’ve never experience anything quite like it.” he softly brushed a strand of hair out of her face, “I...I love you Katie.”

Katie’s smile faltered for a moment, “I love you too Justin.” she managed to get the words out before Justin crushed her lips with his again. Before they got too carried away, Justin’s friends interupted them, wanting them to come get breakfast. The rest of the weekend was spent skiing, fishing, and doing all sorts of things. Katie was having the time of her life, not to mention she and Justin were getting closer and closer. When they got home a couple days later, Justin knew he had to find Shane and call off this bet. He truly loved Katie and he didn’t want to risk losing her by that stupid bed he agreed to. He found Shane at one of their old hang out’s drinking and partying.

“Well, well, well, look who’s here. J how’ve you been man?” Shane grinned over at him.

“Look, I’m not here to socalize. I just came to give you the $100.” Justin quickly said as he handed him the cash.

“I knew you wouldn’t be able to close the deal on Ms. Park Avenue. I guess she prefers a real man. Maybe I’ll do her a favor and go pay her a visit.”

Justin grabbed Shane by the shirt and glared down at him, “You stay the hell away from her. If you come anywhere near her I swear....”

“Chill out J. Park Avenue isn’t really my style anyway.” Shane glared back at him, pushing him away.

Justin didn’t say anything else, he just turned and headed back to his car, anxious to get away from the past he seemed to always be running from.

Lonie began searching through some of the remaining boxes that had yet to be unpacked in her bedroom. She was looking for one of her old notebooks from school when she came across a picture of her and Joey taken about two months before they broke up. Joey had his arms wrapped around her waist, both were grinning at the camera. They were so happy then. Tears sprang to her eyes, as she fought to hold them back. She quickly tore the picture into little pieces and dropped the remains into her wastebasket. Lonie sighed heavily to herself, she knew she still loved Joey, but she knew in time she would eventually get over her heartache and learn to love again.

About a month after they moved into their new apartment, they had yet to find any prospects for a new roomate. Lance mentioned to Jaimie that he had a friend in one of his classes that was looking for an apartment off campus. Lonie took her number and decided to give her a call.

“Hello?”

Lonie heard a bunch of loud music and noise in the background, “H...hi. My name is Lonie. I’m a friend of Lance’s. He said you were looking for an apartment off campus.”

“Yes! Thank god. I’d love to come by and meet you and take a look at the place. You don’t know how much I want to get out of here. I can never study it’s always so loud.”

“You’re name is Alison right?”

Alison laughed softly, “Yeah, I’m sorry. I’m Aliston Stewart.”

“Great. How about you come over tomorrow night for dinner?”

“Name the time and I’ll be there.”

Lonie gave Alison the time and the address for her to come to dinner the next night to take a lok at the apartment and to see if she would like living there with them. They all immediately clicked with each other. It was as they had known each other for a long time. Alison moved in the very next day, thrilled to be out of the dorm rooms. A few months later, all the girls began planning their Christmas party. Alison wouldn’t be able to be there because she was going back home to Oklahoma for Christmas break. They decided to just invite the guys and have a nice dinner together. Soon New Years came along. As they rang in the new year, none of them could imagine what the new year would bring...

Chapter Eight

Josh sat at his piano, softly stroking the ebony and ivory keys. He started playing the piano when he was six, and his passion for music seemed to grow along with him. He would sit at the piano for hours and hours, writing music, trying to compose something magical. Josh was in the middle of writing when his phone rang, “Hello?”

There was a short pause before anyone spoke, “Hello Josh.”

Josh immediately tensed when he heard her voice. It was the voice of the woman who broke his heart in two, “Caroline.”

“I bet you’re surprised to hear from me.” she tried to laugh, but Josh wasn’t a bit amused.

“To say the least. Just what is it that you want Caroline?” his voice remained cold, yet his heart seemed to ache inside telling him what he had tried to fight for so long. He still loved her.

“Listen I…” she began timidly. “I know you probably never wanted to hear from me again, but I’m back home now. I just…I just wanted to see you. To talk to you.”

“We don’t have anything to say to each other,” he said before hanging up the phone. Afterwards, he couldn’t help but wonder what she wanted to see him for. Maybe she realized her mistake and wanted to come back to him. Did he really want her back? Maybe she wanted to tell him she was engaged or married to someone else. He was seeing Lonie now. Lonie was a wonderful woman. She’s smart, funny, beautiful, and so much fun to be around, yet he still felt as though something was missing. He sighed heavily and buried his face in his hands. He checked his caller ID then quickly dialed the number. Josh knew the only way to ease his mind would be if he really saw her.

“The Plaza Hotel.” a curt voice answered.

“Caroline Richards room please.” There was a short pause, then he heard the phone begin to ring on the other end.

“Hello?” she answered. It sounded like she had been crying. Josh felt his anger melt instantly.

“Caroline, it’s Josh.”

“Josh? I didn’t think you’d call.” he heard surprise mixed with happiness in her voice.

“To tell you the truth I almost didn’t. I just know if I don’t see you, then I will always wonder about it. How about we meet for dinner tomorrow night around seven?”

“Sure. How about Nakato’s?” she suggested. Josh couldn’t stop the smile that spread across his face. She knew how much he loved sushi.

“Sure that sounds good. See you tomorrow then.”

“Okay, goodnight Josh. Thank you.”

“Goodnight Caroline.” When he hung up the phone, he could feel the anticipation of seeing her again. He honestly didn’t know if he was setting himself up for the fall again, but he knew he had to try. Josh dialed Lonie’s number to tell her he couldn’t meet her for dinner tomorrow night after all. He felt incredibly guilty for it, but it had to be done.

“Hello?” Jaimie answered.

“Hey Jaim. Is Lonie around?”

“Umm, I think she’s in her room. Hold on a sec okay?”

“Sure.” Josh smiled as he waited patiently for Lonie to come to the phone. Not two minutes later, she picked up.

“Josh?”

“Hey Lonie. How are you?”

“I’m doing okay. What’s up?”

Josh sighed heavily before he spoke again, “Lonie I hate to do this to you, but I need to cancel dinner tomorrow night.”

“Really? Is something wrong?”

“Well, see….” he began but he wasn’t sure how to tell his current girlfriend that his ex was in town and he was canceling dinner with her to have dinner with his ex. “There’s no easy way to put this. Caroline is back in town and she wants to have dinner with me.” There was a long pause with no response from Lonie. “Lonie? Are you still there?”

“I’m here. So you’re canceling dinner with me to have dinner with Caroline?”

“I know this isn’t fair to you Lonie, and I’m so sorry for doing this to you. I just have to go see her. I have to find out why she came back, and most of all I have to find out why she wanted to see me again.”

In her heart, Lonie knew Josh had to do this for his own good, but part of her was afraid. Afraid that when he saw Caroline again he would completely forget about her. Lonie knew she was not in love with Josh, but she wanted to desperately to forget about Joey and she thought Josh would be the one to make her forget. “As much as I may not like this Josh I know this is something you need to do. Just call me afterwards okay?”

“I really appreciate you understanding Lonie. You really are the best.”

“Thanks Josh. I guess I’ll talk to you later.”

“You can count on it. Goodnight Lonie.”

“Night Josh.”

After Josh hung up the phone with Lonie, he couldn’t concentrate on his music any longer. He decided to just turn in early, thinking maybe he could escape the thoughts of Caroline while he slept.

Jaimie could sense something was wrong with Lonie as soon as she hung up the phone. She looked so much sadder.

“Lon, are you okay?”

“Sure I am. I just found out that my new boyfriend is canceling his date with me tomorrow night to go out to dinner with his ex. How would you be?”

“You’re joking right?”

“I wish I were.” Lonie sighed heavily, sitting beside Jaimie on the sofa.

“I know you aren’t exactly happy about this, but you aren’t in love with Josh or anything are you? I mean I thought you were still in love with Joey.” Jaimie decided to continue when Lonie didn’t answer her. “You know, I forgot to tell you this new girl joined our staff at the paper Monday. She’s a very smart and funny girl. I really like her. We found out we actually have quite a lot in common. Her name is Kari, Kari Fatone. She’s Joey’s sister Lonie.”

Lonie’s head jerked up and she stared at Jaimie in disbelief. “You’re joking right?”

“Nope. She was surprised to find out that Joey’s Lonie was one of my best friends. That’s exactly how she put it too…’Joey’s Lonie.’ She says he still talks about you all the time and his new girlfriend was getting on her last nerve. She was thrilled when Joey finally broke up with her a couple days ago.” Lonie looked away for a moment, not wanting Jaimie to see the smile on her face. Joey still talked about her, maybe he still loved her. “Anyway, I just thought that was some interesting information. What do you think?”

Lonie slowly turned to face her, fighting to keep a straight face. “I want Joey to be happy Jaimie. That’s all I want.” Before Jaimie could ask her any more question, Alison burst into the room with the biggest smile on her face.

“Hello guys.” she sighed happily as she sat down in the chair across from them.

“What’s that smile for?” Lonie asked.

“I just got an email from my boyfriend Jason. Remember I told you guys he was back home in Nebraska. I miss him so much. He keeps sending me the cutest things online.”

“That’s sweet Al. When will you be going back to visit?” Jaimie asked, twirling a long strand of her hair between her fingers.

“I’m really not sure. As soon as I possibly can though. I miss everyone back there so much.”

“Well girls, I need to go get ready for my date with Lance. Talk to you later.” Jaimie grinned as she stood to go to her room to get ready.

“Goodnight Jaim. Have fun. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Lonie grins devilishly over at her.

Jaimie laughed loudly, “HA! That leaves the door wide open for me then.”

“Oh, you’re hysterical.” Lonie laughed sarcastically. Her mind hadn’t stopped thinking about Joey since Jaimie told her of her conversation with his sister. Her heart ached terribly when her thoughts went to him. She knew why. She still loved him. No matter who she went out with and how many dates she had, nothing was going to change that fact. She had no clue what she could say or do to have him back in her life once more. Could they move on after what had happened? Could Joey learn to control his jealousy? Lonie wished she knew the answers to these questions, but there would be only one way to find out. She would have to talk to Joey, and she wasn’t sure she was ready for that just yet.

Lance was taken aback when Jaimie opened the door. She was absolutely breathtaking. Her long, curly brown hair hung down her back, and she wore a sexy little black slip dress that fell just to above her knees.

“Wow, you look beautiful.” he smiled once he was able to find his voice.

“Thank you very much. You look pretty good to.” she smiled back at him.

“So, umm… are you ready?”

“Yes I am. Let me grab my wrap and my purse.” Jaimie turned to retrieve her things from where she had laid them on the chair. Alison and Lonie were still sitting in the living room talking. “Goodnight ladies. Don’t wait up for me.” she winked at them before following Lance out the door. He took her to a nice Greek restaurant in Manhattan. The food was terrific, the atmosphere was incredibly romantic, and the conversation was even better. Lance knew he was falling more and more in love with her each passing day. She was everything he had been looking for and more. He hoped that one day she would feel the same way about him. He was more than willing to wait patiently for her. Jaimie knew what she felt for Lance was special, something she had never felt before with anyone. If she was really truthful with herself, her growing feelings for him scared her. Every time she allowed herself to fall in love she always seemed to be the one to get the broken heart. Maybe Lance was different, but she knew she wasn’t going to willing offer him her heart until she was sure what she felt was real and that he felt the same way. After they finished their dinner, they decided to take a walk through Central Park. The night was absolutely beautiful, although I was a little on the chilly side. Jaimie began to shiver slightly, despite the wrap she wore.

Lance seemed to notice this right away, “Are you cold?”

“Just a little. I’ll be fine.”

“Here….” he began as he removed his jacket. “Take my jacket.”

“But then you’ll be cold….” she began to argue as Lance pulled his jacket over her shoulders.

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me.” he said, his arms still wrapped around her. The wind picked up at that very moment, causing her hair to blow wildly around her face. It seemed like it was the perfect moment. He leaned forward and brushed his lips across hers. The touch was very gentle at first, but Lance pulled her tighter against his chest deepening the kiss. She felt shivers shoot down her spine and she knew it wasn’t from the chill in the night air. When they finally parted, Jaimie smiled up at him.

“I’m definitely not cold anymore.”

“Neither am I.”

“Would you like to come back up to my room?” she asked shyly. This wouldn’t be the first time she slept with someone, but it was the first time she had made the offer. Her heart was hammering in her chest as she waited for Lance to answer her.

“Are you sure you’re ready for this step?” he asked, wanting to make sure this wasn’t moving too fast. He wanted her terribly, but if it meant he would risk losing her in the long run, he was willing to wait even longer.

“I’m sure.”

“Then yes I would like to go to your room.” he smiled down at her as they began to walk across the street to her apartment. Lance couldn’t help but feel like after tonight things would never be the same between them again. He wasn’t sure if that was a good thing.

Chapter Nine

When Jaimie unlocked the door to their apartment all of the lights were already out. The apartment was silent. Jaimie turned to Lance and put a finger to her lips telling him to be as quiet as possible as she led him to her bedroom. Jaimie turned on her CD player and the sound of Marvin Gaye filled her room.

“You aren’t afraid of waking the girls?” Lance asked as Jaimie approached him.

“No. I don’t have it up loud, besides our bedrooms are far enough apart that we shouldn’t have to worry.” Jaimie ran her hands up Lance’s chest, her arms eventually encircling his neck. “Dance with me?”

“You don’t have to ask,” he whispered as he pulled her body to his. Jaimie sighed contently relaxing in his strong embrace, letting him lead her. Lance buried his face in her neck, softly kissing her, sending shivers down her spine. She pulled back slightly meeting his gaze. Their lips met once again in a powerful kiss. Lance’s hands found the zipper of her dress slowly unzipping it as Jaimie tried to quickly unbutton his shirt. She pushed it off his shoulders, letting it drop to the floor behind them. Jaimie took a few steps away from Lance, quickly kicking off her heels. She smiled seductively as he slowly slid her dress down her body, tossing it aside. She stood there in front of him clad in only her black lace panties. His breath caught in his throat as he looked at her. She was so incredibly beautiful. Lance unbuttoned his slacks and slid them down his strong legs, tossing them aside. Jaimie’s heart began to race wildly in her chest as she watched him. She reached out her hand for him to come to her, and then led him to her bed. They stood on the side of the bed just looking at each other, then Lance pulled her to him crushing his lips to hers. Jaimie immediately deepened the kiss, her tongue twining with his own. His hands gently caressed her breasts, eliciting soft moans from her. His hands slowly traveled down her back until they reached the top of her panties. He ran one finger along the top of her panties, silently teasing her, knowing what she wanted. Jaimie clung to him for support, knowing what he was going to do. Finally, he reached inside barely touching her, teasing her even more. Jaimie moaned in frustration. He smiled to himself, then took pity on her. Lance’s touch was soft and gentle, causing her knees to get weak. He began to get impatient. He needed to be inside her. Much to her disappointment, Lance’s hands stopped their slow caress as he slid her panties down her legs before tossing them over his shoulder. She quickly rid him of his boxers before they fell back onto the bed kissing passionately. Lance entered her, but he kept his pace slow. He wanted this moment to last forever. The woman he loved was in his arms and he wanted to cherish this moment for as long as he could. But his need for his own release began to get the best of him as he began to move faster and faster. Jaimie knew her release would be coming soon. The fire deep inside her was smoldering beyond anything she had ever felt before. Lance could feel his release approaching, so he began going even faster, hoping to bring Jaimie over the edge with him. That’s when the explosion hit her. She could have sworn she saw fireworks the moment she fell over the edge from her intense orgasm. Never had she experienced something like this before. Once her walls began to tighten around him, Lance was able to find his release as well. He collapsed beside her, pulling her tightly against his chest as they both recovered from their love making.

“Mmmm, that was….amazing.” she smiled up at him.

“I couldn’t agree more. It was more incredible than I have ever imagined it could have been.”

“So….are you staying tonight?” she asked, not really sure if she knew what she wanted the answer to be.

“I will if you want me to, but if you don’t I can leave. It’s whatever you say.”

“You can stay here. I mean only if you want to.” she sat up to look into his eyes. He smiled down at her kissing her nose softly.

“Of course I want to.” he brushed his lips across hers, then he turned over to turn out the lamp on the nightstand. Lance spooned her from behind, pulling her to his chest, keeping a protective arm around her. “Goodnight Jaimie.”

“Goodnight Lance.” she whispered as she let herself begin to drift off into dreamland. Ten minutes later, she was still awake. She heard Lance whisper, “I love you.” to her before tightening his arm around her. She felt her heart stop for a moment in her chest. Jaimie didn’t know what that feeling meant. Did she feel the same way? Had this experience with him deepened her feelings even more? She pretended to be asleep and didn’t answer him. She certainly wasn’t going to repeat the sentiment until she was sure it was what she really felt for him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Josh made it to the restaurant ten minutes early and was seated at a table by the window. He played with the linen napkin on the table nervously as he waited for Caroline to arrive. He went ahead and ordered a bottle of wine for them and began to sip on a glass while he waited. She arrived right on time as usual. Josh stood as he saw her approach. She was still as beautiful as he remembered her to be. Her long raven black hair hung down past her shoulders and her soft brown eyes still sparkled with a hint of mischief. His heart ached at the mere site of her and he couldn’t hide the hurt in his eyes as he lowered his gaze for a moment. The smile that had adorned Caroline’s face faltered slightly when he looked away from her. She knew he was trying to hide his pain. She hated the fact that she had been the one to cause him so much pain. She really did love him, but somehow after she left for Europe she felt so free. When she thought about Josh waiting for her to come back home to marry her she felt so closed in and tied down. Caroline thought it would just be better for both of them to end the relationship and to see other people. She began to date several different guys, never really committing to any of them…until she met Stephan. He was so suave and charming and he immediately swept her off her feet. With one look of his grey eyes and one dimpled smile he turned her into mush. Caroline thought she had truly found her soul mate in Stephan, but he had other plans. Just a few short months after they started seeing each other Stephan broke it off saying he needed time away from her and things were going too fast for him. She immediately flew back home; somehow hoping Josh’s arms would open up for her to fall back into. She had convinced herself that Stephan’s leaving her was a sign that she was really meant to be with Josh forever. She just hoped she was right. By the look on his face, she was pretty sure he still loved her. Caroline hugged him tightly. “It’s so good to see you again Josh. You don’t know how much I’ve missed you.”

Josh closed his eyes and breathed in her scent deeply. It was just like he had remembered it. She always smelled like vanilla. “I….I’m really not sure how I feel about it yet.”

She smiled softly up at him, “I’ll accept that. I see you’ve already ordered our drinks.”

“Yeah. I was a little nervous, so I needed something to help calm my nerves.”

“You remembered white wine was my favorite?”

Josh laughed at himself, “Yeah I guess I did. So how have you been?”

“I’ve been okay. Work has kept me busy. What about you?”

“Same here.” They were then met with an awkward silence. Caroline was the first to speak.

“I….I’m so sorry Josh. I’m sorry for the way I left and the way I broke up with you. I can only imagine how much I hurt you. I just….I just need you to know that I never meant to hurt you. I really did love you Joshua. There’s even times when I wonder if I made a mistake…” she mumbled before she looked down into her wine glass. Josh couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Was Caroline telling him that she regretted breaking up with him? Was she trying to say that she still loved him after all this time?

“What exactly are you trying to say Caroline? What do you want from me?”

She looked up at him with tears glistening in her eyes, “I want another chance. Do you think that’s possible Josh? Can you forgive me and let us start all over again?” Josh sat there for a moment, not quite sure what to think about her request. “I can understand if you can’t answer my questions now. Can you at least agree to see me again to see if there is a chance for us?”

Something inside Josh was telling him that he should just walk away now and spare his heart another beating like it had had when she left him before, but he listened to the part that always won. His heart. He smiled softly over at her, “Okay Caroline. I’ll agree to see you again, but I can’t promise you anything.”

She grinned over at him, “That’s all I ask for.” They spent the rest of their dinner talking about everything that they had done over the last year since she had been gone. Caroline couldn’t bring up Stephan to Josh. Telling him about Stephan could make Josh think she was only here because of him…which was the actual truth. Caroline didn’t want to risk Josh rejecting her too. Somehow Josh had felt like it was old times with Caroline. They talked like they had never been apart. In the back of his mind, he couldn’t help but wonder what Lonie was doing. After he walked Caroline back to her hotel, he believed more than ever that he was doing the right thing by agreeing to see Caroline again. Only one thought brought him down. He didn’t know how he was going to tell Lonie he was going to start seeing Caroline again. Josh didn’t want to hurt her, but he had to follow his heart no matter what road it may lead him down.

Chapter Ten

The next morning when Jaimie woke, she realized Lance wasn’t beside her. She got up, pulled on her robe, and made her way into the kitchen. That’s where she found Lance, fixing eggs and toast. When he saw her approach, he smiled at her. Just his smile caused her heart to race wildly in her chest. This strange new feeling made her very uneasy. She didn’t really know what to think of it.

“Good morning beautiful.” he leaned over the counter to give her a quick kiss before turning his attention to their breakfast.

“Good morning.” she smiled back. “I didn’t know you could cook.”

“I guess that just means you’ll have to spend some more time with me to get to know me even better.”

Jaimie laughed, “I guess so.”

Lance turned towards her, gently sitting her plate in front of her. “Jaim, I hope you don’t regret last night. Because I can’t bring myself to.”

Jaimie looked at him for a moment before answering, “Of course I don’t Lance. It was a beautiful experience. I would never regret it.”

“Good.” he finally smiled again.

Lonie and Alison walked into the kitchen to find Lance and Jaimie sharing a nice breakfast together. They grinned over at them, while Jaimie blushed furiously.

“I see you DIDN’T do anything I wouldn’t do after all Jaim.” Lonie smirked.

“Shut up Lonie.”

“Hey, why so touchy?”

“I don’t know.” Jaimie looked down at her plate. She then looked back up at Lonie. “Have you heard from Josh?”

Lonie’s smiled disappeared, “No I haven’t. I really don’t know what to think either.”

“I’m sure everything is okay Lon. Try not to worry about it too much. I know he cares for you.”

“What do you think Lance? I mean you have known him for a long time and you know everything that went on with Caroline.” Lonie asked.

Lance didn’t really want to answer her question, but he knew he had to. He also knew he couldn’t lie. “He was devastated when Caroline broke off their engagement. I’m not going to lie to you Lonie. I think it is very possible for him to easily fall back in love with her if she were to give the slightest inclination that she is still interested. I’m sorry if that hurts your feelings.”

“I appreciate you telling me the truth Lance. I really do.” Lonie tried to smile. She lowered her head and walked back towards her room. Jaimie’s heart ached for her friend, and she wished there was something she could do to help her. Unfortunately, this was something she’d have to handle herself. She knew Lonie knew she would be there for her if she needed her. Her heartache for Lonie’s pain soon turned to anger at Lance. How could he deliberately hurt Lonie like that? Alison and Lance talked and laughed during the rest of breakfast, but Jaimie just sat there pushing her food around on her plate. Her change in demeanor didn’t go unnoticed by Lance.

“Aren’t you going to eat?” he asked.

“I’m not hungry.” she answered coldly. Lance was surprised by her coldness. He knew she was angry. Jaimie stood and walked back towards her room saying nothing to either of them. Alison watched the scene unfold, not really sure what the problem was. Lance kept looking at the closed door as he tried to concentrate on clearing the dishes. Alison laughed and took the plates from his hands.

“Go. I’ll clean up.”

Lance turned his attention to her, “I’ll finish….”

“Lance, go talk to her. I don’t mind really.”

He smiled down at her, “Thanks Alison.”

He quickly turned and headed towards Jaimie’s room. He knocked softly before entering. He found her standing at her dresser brushing her long curly hair. Her eyes met his through the mirror and he could see the anger that burned in their depths.

“Okay, tell me what I did to piss you off.”

She turned to look at him, “You mean you really don’t know?”

“No I really don’t. I mean you were fine until Lonie and Alison came into the kitchen.” he paused. “You aren’t upset because they know we spent the night together are you?”

Jaimie rolled her eyes, “No Lance I’m not. I’m upset because of what you said to Lonie. You knew how worried she already was and what you told her just made it worse.”

“Okay so you would have preferred I lied to her?” he asked, not trying to mask his own anger.

“Sometimes lying is the best policy. Especially if it saves someone’s feelings.”

“That may be true, but this isn’t one of those times Jaimie. It’s not like I’d be lying about a bad haircut. This is about real feelings. I’m sorry, but I think you’re wrong.” Lance began to quickly pull his clothes back on. He stood with his hand on the door, looking back towards her with sad eyes. “If you decide to forgive me for being honest you know where to find me.”

He shut the door softly behind him, his final words still stinging her. Had she been silly to get upset with him because he told the truth? Under most circumstances she wanted the man she was dating to be honest above everything else. She felt terrible about the way she acted. Most of all, she hated the way he left angry at her. She made him feel like he was wrong to tell the truth. Jaimie really wasn’t sure what she was going to do to make things better between them again. She needed to talk to Lonie. She knocked on her door and waited for her to answer.

“Come in.”

She peeked around the door, offering her a sad smile, “Hey. How are you feeling?”

“I’m hanging in there. Where’s Lance?”

“Ummm, he….he left.” she stammered refusing to look her in the eye.

“What’s wrong?”

Jaimie sighed, “We got into an argument. He left angry at me.”

“Why? What happened?”

“I got mad because of what he said to you.”

“Because he told me the truth about Josh?”

“Yes, but I just hated to see you hurt even more and I know what he told you hurt.”

“I’m not going to lie and say it didn’t sting, but I’m glad he was honest with me.”

Jaimie sighed heavily as she fell back onto Lonie’s bed beside her, “What am I going to do Lonie? You know what he said to me before he left?”

“What?”

“If you decide to forgive me for being honest you know where to find me.”

“Ouch.” Lonie frowned, “Well, you’ll just have to apologize.”

“What do I say?”

“Just tell him you’re sorry and that you overreacted. You know he would never intentionally hurt me.”

“Do you think he’ll forgive me?”

“I think so. He’s crazy about you.”

Jaimie laughed softly, “Probably not at the moment.”

“Even though he’s angry, I know he’s still crazy about you. Feelings like that don’t fade that easily.” Lonie’s face fell as she spoke. She was beginning to think about her relationship with Joey again. What was it about that man that made her so crazy? She mentally shook herself and smiled at Jaimie. “Just go to him and talk it out.”

“I think I’ll go for a run to clear my head. Want to go?”

“No thanks.”

“I’ll be back later.”

“Okay. Have fun.”

Jaimie quickly changed into her running pants and a sweatshirt before heading towards Central Park for her run. It was Sunday morning and freezing outside, so no one was around. Subconsciously she knew where she was headed. Three miles on the other side of Central Park where Lance’s dorm was.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Half and hour after Jaimie left, Josh knocked on their door.

“Hi,” Lonie smiled, greeting him with a soft kiss on the cheek. When he didn’t return her smile, she began to worry.

“Hey. Can I come in?” he asked.

“Sure.” she stepped aside to let him in. Alison was sitting at the kitchen table working on her English report, so she didn’t notice anyone come in. “Josh, you haven’t met our new roommate Alison. Alison this is our friend Josh.” It wasn’t until then that Alison looked up. She smiled and walked towards him with her hand extended.

“Hi Josh. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Likewise.” he smiled, mesmerized by her blue-grey eyes. After a moment, he turned his attention back to Lonie, “Can we talk?”

“Sure we can go to my room.” Lonie tried to remain calm, but her stomach was in knots. She sat down on her bed and looked up at him with a smile, “Sit down.” She was put off when he sat down at her computer chair instead of on the bed beside her.

“I really don’t know where to start.”

Lonie was silent for a moment, “This has to do with Caroline doesn’t it? You’re leaving me for her?”

Josh raised his sad blue eyes to hers, “Yes.” he whispered. “I’m so sorry Lonie. I never expected this to happen. I didn’t think I’d ever see her again, but after being with her again last night and all the things we talked about….I just…I just think I’m still in love with her.”

Lonie fought the tears that threatened to fall, “Umm, well I can’t say I wasn’t expecting this. I wish you both the best Josh I really do.” She stood and walked towards her window, not wanting him to see how hurt she was.

“Lonie, I never meant to hurt you. Please believe me.”

“I know you didn’t Josh, but it still hurts.” she sniffled.

He paused for a moment, “I hope we can still be friends.”

“Give me some time Josh. Please just give me some time.”

“I’m here when you’re ready. Take care Lonie.” Josh kissed the top of her head softly before turning and leaving the apartment. Lonie slowly sat down on her bed and cried softly to herself. She wasn’t crying over the loss of Josh as a boyfriend. Lonie knew she really did care for him, but the break up didn’t devastate her. She was sad because she was alone once again.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Things between Katie and Justin were still going strong. Ever since their camping trip, the two had been inseparable. If Justin didn’t stay at their apartment, then Katie was staying at Justin’s apartment. They hardly ever spent one night away from each other. Katie knew she was in love, but she wasn’t quite sure how Justin felt about her. She had learned that most guys freak the minute you mention relationships to them, so she was reluctant to talk to him about it. Part of her was afraid he wouldn’t reciprocate her feelings. Katie honestly didn’t know what she would do if she didn’t have Justin in her life. He was her everything. Admitting to that fact scared her more than anything in the world.

Chapter Eleven

Once Jaimie reached his dorm, she began to pace back and forth across the courtyard trying to figure out what she was going to say.

“Hi Lance…..no that sounds too happy,” she frowned, angrily brushing a few stray strands of hair from her face. “Jaimie just go up there and apologize.” She sighed heavily and made her way up the stairs to his room. She knocked on his door three times, but no one answered. Just as she turned to leave, an attractive guy practically ran into her.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” he smiled.

She tried to return his smile, but she couldn’t stop wondering where Lance was. “It’s okay.”

“Are you looking for Lance?”

“Yeah, have you seen him?”

“He left about twenty minutes ago with some blonde girl I’ve never seen before.”

“A blonde girl?” she choked out.

The guy smiled ruefully, “Yeah. I’m sorry to say but they looked really close too.”

Jaimie felt sick to her stomach. She couldn’t believe Lance would do this to her. They get into one argument and he’s off with some other girl. “Thank you,” she managed to whisper as she walked away.

“Are you okay?” he asked, his concern showing in his blue eyes.

“I’ll be okay. Thank you.”

“Do you want me to give him a message?”

“No. Please don’t even tell him I was here.”

“Okay I won’t. I know this isn’t going to make you feel any better, and I swear I’m not trying to hit on you, but I think he’s a fool.”

Jaimie managed a sad smile, “That’s very sweet of you.” Once Jaimie was out of the building, she finally let her tears fall. She had never experienced such pain as she was feeling at that very moment. She began her jog back home, but halfway there her tears were coming so hard she had to stop and sit down on a park bench until they subsided. Once her tears dried, it was almost as if all of her emotions and feelings dried up as well. She felt numb and hollow, and she was determined to get on with her life the way she had planned before Lance Bass had ever entered it. ‘I never should have let him get that close to me,’ she thought to herself. ‘I’ll show you Lance Bass. You’ve broken my heart for the first and only time.’ Jaimie began her jog home once more, vowing that no one would ever know the pain he caused her.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The next morning, Jaimie received an invitation in the mail. It was an invitation to one of her cousin’s engagement parties. Jaimie hadn’t seen Valerie in over a year, but growing up the two had been close. She knew she had to go to the party, even though her heart wasn’t in it.

“What’s that Jaim?” Lonie asked.

“It’s an engagement party invitation. One of my cousin’s are getting married.”

“Oh, that sounds like fun. When is the party?”

“Next week. I need to go find a dress to wear. Valerie is from the wealthy side of the family, so I have to look VERY good for the party. Want to go shopping with me this afternoon?”

“Sure. It’s not like I have anything else to do. I don’t have a date or anything.” Lonie frowned.

“Oh Lon. I’m sorry.” Jaimie smiled sympathetically. “Hey why don’t you come with me to the party.”

“You’re not going to take Lance.”

Jaimie’s eyes turned cold with the mere mention of his name, “No. I want you to come with me. As a matter of fact, why don’t you and Alison come with me? She never goes out anywhere. She spends all of her time on that computer hoping Jason will be online. She needs to get out of the house.”

“Then I guess that settles it. You, me, and Alison are going to this party and we are going to show all those stuffy upper class people how to have some fun.” Lonie grinned.

“Hey that is my family you’re talking about.” Jaimie laughed.

“You mean it’s not true?”

“Well, okay so it’s the truth, but Valerie isn’t like that. She’s more down to earth. She never wanted to be a part of the country club scene. That’s why we were so close growing up.”

“She sounds like she’s a cool person. I can’t wait to meet her.”

“She’s the best.” Jaimie smiled. “Do you think Alison will agree to go?”

“She won’t have a choice.”

After a little coercion, Alison finally agreed to go with them to the party. They all went shopping together and bought the perfect dresses for the party. During the week leading up to the party, Jaimie couldn’t help but wonder why Lance hadn’t called her at all. After all, he didn’t know she knew about his blonde trollop. She tried to push him out of her thoughts and concentrated on getting ready for the party. All three girls looked beautiful. Jaimie wore a strapless lavender dress adorned with crystals and beads. It fell just above her knees, and fit her in all the right places. She wore her long, curly hair up in a French twist, allowing a few stray curls to frame her face. Lonie wore a long, strapless baby blue gown of the softest satin, that hugged every curve of her tiny frame. Her long blonde hair fell down her back in beautiful layers. Alison chose a knee length hunter green dress, made of crushed velvet. The dress resembled the old peasant dresses with the long flowing sleeves, and the scooped neck. Her chin length strawberry blonde hair was held back with a few jeweled barrettes. They all looked beautiful in their own unique ways. By the time they arrived at the party, they were a few minutes late. When the door opened, there stood an attractive man who looked to be in his mid to late twenties. He had dark brown hair, chocolate brown eyes that seemed to sparkle with mischief, and a well kept goatee.

“Good evening ladies. Please come in.” he smiled as he stepped aside to allow them in.

“Christopher!” they heard a woman across the room scold. “Why do you keep answering the door? That’s what the butler’s are for.” The girls watched as a lovely young woman about their age walked towards them. She had shoulder length blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and a warm smile. “Jaimie!” she exclaimed as she approached. She pulled her in for a warm hug. “I was hoping you’d get the invitation.”

“Hi Val. I couldn’t believe it when I opened the envelope and there was an engagement invitation from you. I thought you said you were never going to get married.”

Valerie laughed, “Well, I guess when you find the right person everything changes.” She turned to the man who had opened the door for them. “Jaimie, this is my fiancé Christopher. Christopher, this is my cousin Jaimie. Remember I told you about her.”

He smiled and extended his hand, “Yes I remember. It’s nice to finally meet you Jaimie. I’ve heard a lot about you from Valerie.”

“It’s nice to meet you too. It’s nice to meet the man who finally tied her down,” she laughed.

“Yeah yeah.” Valerie laughed. “Are these your friends?”

“Oh yes. Val, these are my roommates Lonie and Alison. Guys, this is my cousin Valerie and her fiancé Chris.”

“It’s nice to meet you. Please make yourselves at home and enjoy the party. Lord knows someone should because I certainly am not.” Valerie frowned. “You know how Mom and Dad are. They just HAD to have this huge party to show all the ‘right’ people that their hellcat daughter is finally settling down.” She groaned as she noticed her father motioning for her and Christopher to come to him. “I’ll see you later Jaim, if I don’t get arrested for killing my parents.”

“Okay. Bye Val.” Jaimie laughed as she watched Valerie and Chris walk hand in hand towards her father. Jaimie couldn’t help but notice that Chris kept glancing over in her direction throughout the evening. She tried to ignore it, but she just couldn’t. Later that evening, Jaimie made her way out onto the terrace, hoping to catch a breath of fresh air. She was startled when someone behind her spoke.

“You know Valerie never told me you were so beautiful.” he smiled.

Jaimie relaxed when she realized who it was, “That’s sweet of you to say Chris. I wish I could say the same for you, but until last week, I had no clue you existed.”

Chris laughed, “Yeah. From what I hear there were a lot of people who were shocked to hear that Valerie was engaged.”

“I can imagine.”

“There you are,” Valerie called out from the doorway. “I was wondering where you two ran off too.”

“Just taking a breather Val. It can get kinds stuffy in there.” Jaimie smiled sympathetically at her cousin.

“Don’t I know it.” she rolled her eyes. “Listen Jaim, I have a favor to ask of you.”

“Name it.”

“I have to go out of town this week, and I was wondering if you would keep Chris company while I was away. He’s not from here and I thought it would be nice if he had someone who could show him around.”

Jaimie wasn’t sure this was something she wanted to do. Chris seemed like a nice enough guy, but something told her he couldn’t be trusted. She knew he was attracted to her by the way he had been complimenting her throughout the evening, but how could she say no to her cousin without making her suspicious. “Umm, sure. I guess.”

“Thanks Jaim. I knew I could count on you.” Valerie smiled.

“You’re welcome Val.” she smiled.

“I look forward to it.” Chris smiled over at her, causing Jaimie’s spine to tingle.

On the ride home, Jaimie mentioned nothing of Chris’ actions to the other girls. The last thing she needed was for them to start telling her what she should or shouldn’t be doing, and she knew they would if she told them. She decided to just keep it to herself; after all it was no one’s business but her own.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The next morning, Jaimie received a phone call from Chris. He wanted to take her out to dinner that night. He was already lonely since Valerie left and he didn’t want to be alone. Against her better judgment she agreed to go out with him. When he arrived that night, he handed her a single red rose. Jaimie really wasn’t sure what to think of it.

“Thank you Chris. It’s beautiful.” she smiled.

“It’s beauty pales in comparison to yours.” He offered her his arm, “Shall we?”

She gently placed her hand in the crook of his arm and smiled again, “We shall.”

During dinner, Jaimie tried to keep the conversation light. Every time Chris tried to get on the subject of her and her personal life, she changed the subject to the weather, or started talking about some of the places he might want to see while in New York. Chris was very charming and handsome, but during the entire dinner Jaimie’s mind kept wandering to Lance. What was he doing at that exact moment and who was he with? She wasn’t sure she wanted to know the answer to that.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

That night, Katie planned to meet Justin for dinner across town. Earlier that morning she took her car to the shop for her routine oil change and tune up. The mechanics got bombarded with major problems and had been unable to finish her car by that evening. Katie decided to just take the bus to meet Justin despite his futile attempts to talk her into letting him come pick her up. They were just going to go to a small little pizza parlor across town for dinners, so Katie was dressed in a pair of worn blue jeans, a T-shirt, and her favorite worn leather jacket. Katie was the only person on the bus at first, but a few blocks down the road a couple of guys got onboard. Katie couldn’t help but notice the way they smirked over in her direction. They began a conversation, but they made sure they were talking loud enough for Katie to hear.

“Yo man, that’s the chick Justin was trying to bang. I bet him $100 that he couldn’t bang Ms. Park Avenue and he took it. Can you believe it? Mr. I’m Too Good To Hang With You anymore took the bet. I guess that just shows just how much he’s changed. I miss that $100 too.” Shane sneered as he saw Katie squirm in her seat. How could Justin do that to her? She thought he was different, but she was wrong. All he cared about was getting her into bed and winning that bet. She got off the bus at the next stop and caught the next bus back home. Once she was safe inside their apartment, she collapsed onto the couch and let her tears fall. That’s where Jaimie found her when she got home that night.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

“Katie?” she asked as she set her purse on the table. “Katie what’s wrong sweetie?”

“Justin…..Justin….”

“Has something happened to him?”

"No. I was supposed to meet him for dinner across town tonight, but my car was still in the shop. I decided to take the bus to meet him. Well, on the ride over two guys got on the bus that claim to know him. One of them said Justin had made a bet with him that he would be able to get me into bed.” Katie collapsed into tears again. Jaimie pulled her into her arms and held her while she cried.

“That son of a bitch. I can’t believe he did that.”

“I thought he was different Jaim. I really did. I’m so stupid.”

“Shhhh, no you aren’t stupid Katie. How were you supposed to know he would turn out to be someone totally different than who you thought he was?” Jaimie said, but she couldn’t help but wonder if she was talking to Katie or herself.

“I hate him.” she spat angrily. “I never want to see him again.”

“You don’t have to see him at all if you don’t want to.” Jaimie said, just as the phone rang. She leaned across the table to pick it up, “Hello?”

“Hey Jaimie. It’s Justin. Is Katie there? She was supposed to meet me like an hour ago and I’m really worried about her.”

“You have a lot of nerve calling here. Don’t call here anymore Katie doesn’t want to talk to you or see you ever again.” Jaimie yelled as she slammed the phone down in his ear. Justin was taken aback by Jaimie’s behavior. He had to find out what was going on and he had to know why Katie didn’t want to see him anymore. He made the decision right then that he was going to go to her apartment to talk to her. Just as he leaves the restaurant, it starts to pour rain outside. He pulled his jacket close around his slender frame and continued his journey to Katie’s apartment. By the time he got there, Lonie had made it home and Jaimie filled her in on what had happened. They finally got Katie to stop crying, and calmed her down with a cup of chamomile tea. Half an hour after Jaimie hung up on Justin, he was buzzing the intercom to their apartment.

“Katie! Katie it’s Justin. Please let me up. I have to talk to you.”

Lonie quickly went to the intercom, “Justin go away! Katie doesn’t want to talk to you.”

“Please Lonie. I have to know what’s going on.”

“Go away you’re not welcome here anymore. Maybe next time you’ll think before you make stupid, immature bets that end up hurting other people.”

It wasn’t until then that the realization of what was going on hit him. She found out about the bet he made with Shane, “Katie you have to let me explain…”

“Justin if you don’t leave now I will call the police. GO!” Lonie yelled.

Justin knew he wasn’t going to have a chance to talk to Katie. He reluctantly walked away, not knowing how he was going to make her understand what made him take that bet in the first place, or even why he told Shane he didn’t sleep with her when he did.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

In the weeks following, Justin didn’t give up on trying to talk to Katie about what really happened with the bet. He would wait for her outside their apartment, and outside her work, but she always managed to avoid him. She began to see a guy from work named Peter. He was an attractive man in his mid twenties, who always knew how to say and do the right things. Katie was so anxious to get over Justin that she jumped into this relationship much too soon. Jaimie, Lonie, and Alison tried to warn her to be careful, but to no avail. Katie was on a downward spiral and there was nothing any of them could do about it.

Jaimie continued to meet Chris for dinner, and she took him to various tourist attractions in New York. Lonie, Katie, and Alison couldn’t help but wonder what had happened between her and Lance, but Jaimie still refused to talk about it. Lance had attempted to contact her since their argument, but Jaimie always got the girls to lie telling him she was out or she was in the shower. None of them knew what to think anymore. Chris’ advances began to grow more and more. It started with a little kiss, but lately he had begun to get more aggressive. Jaimie knew what she was doing was wrong, and this was her cousin’s fiancé, but it didn’t stop her from letting him kiss her and touch her in the most intimate of places. She kept telling herself that this was the kind of man she needed. Someone who was smart, funny, and mature. Deep down she knew part of Chris’ appeal to her was the fact she knew she wouldn’t get hurt with him. She let him take her back to the apartment he shared with Valerie one night after dinner. He led her to the bedroom where they began to kiss and touch each other. Jaimie knew what was going to happen, but part of her just didn’t care anymore. She simply laid there and let him do whatever he wanted to to her. Suddenly they heard a key in the door. Chris immediately jumped off Jaimie, pulling her to her feet.

“Chris?” they heard Valerie call out. “Chris are you home? I’m home early.”

Chris began to pick up Jaimie’s shoes and jacket and quickly shoved them in her arms before pushing her into the closet, “Yeah I’m in the bedroom. This is a nice surprise.” He got the doors closed just as Valerie walked in. She smiled adoringly at him.

“Did you miss me?”

“More than words can say.” he smiled back, crossing the room to pull her to him in a long, sweet kiss. “What do you say I run you a nice hot bath after that long plane ride?”

“Mmmm, that sounds wonderful. Will you join me?” she asked playfully.

“Of course I will. Why don’t you go ahead in and start and I’ll go get a bottle of wine for us.”

“Don’t be long.” she whispered as she began to strip away her clothes, making her way to the bathroom. Jaimie watched them from inside the closet. Her heart ached inside her chest. How could she have let things get this far with Chris? Her cousin was so in love with him. How could she do this to her? Did she want to make someone else hurt the way Lance hurt her by being with another woman? Was the really that cruel? She was brought from her thoughts when Chris opened the door and pulled her out.

“I’ll call you okay?” Chris whispered as he opened the door and pushed her out.

Jaimie looked at him disbelievingly, “Why? Don’t you see how much she loves you? Why were you willing to do this to her? I know my reasons, but right now they seem to be very stupid.” Chris didn’t say anything. He just watched her for a moment as she walked away. Jaimie knew all of her actions with Chris were because of what Lance had done to her, and she was ashamed of herself for it.

Chapter Twelve

Alison could hardly contain her excitement. She was going home for a week. It would be the first time she’d been home since Christmas. She couldn’t wait to see her family again, and her boyfriend Jason. He was supposed to pick her up at the airport. She waited by the baggage claim for twenty minutes, then he finally showed up. Alison launched herself into his arms, kissing his face over and over again.

"Oh I missed you." she sighed happily.

"I missed you to Ali. Sorry I’m late. I got stuck in a meeting."

"What meeting?" she asked confused.. He never mentioned anything in their previous conversations.

"Nothing. Is this all y our luggage?" he asked, changing the subject.

"Yeah that’s it."

During the ride to Alison’s place, she couldn’t help but wonder just who Jason was with. It had to have been more than ‘nothing’ as he had put it. She pushed her doubts aside, trusting that Jason would tell her when the time was right. Once she was home, all of her worries and doubts disappeared. Everything seemed to be just like it was before she left.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

In the days following her last date with Chris, Lonie couldn’t help but notice how much more distant Jaimie was getting. She hardly ever came out of her room, and she hardly ever talked to any of them anymore. She would answer them if they asked her questions, but never contributed to their conversations over dinner or in general. Lonie was fed up with it. She was getting more worried with each passing day. She decided she was going to make her tell her what was going on if it was the last thing she did. Lonie knocked on her bedroom door and waited for her to answer.

"Come in." she called out from inside her room.

Lonie smiled as she walked inside, "Hey. We need to talk."

"What about?" Jaimie asked, putting down the book she was reading.

"About you, and why you’re withdrawing from us, and why you haven’t talked to or even mentioned Lance in the last month."

Jaimie looked away, unable to meet her gaze. "Please don’t Lonie…"

"Don’t what Jaim? We are so worried about you. Tell me what’s going on."

Jaimie sighed heavily, knowing she needed to tell Lonie the truth. "Remember the day Lance and I got into an argument and I went for a run?"

"Yeah."

"Well, I ended up running across Central Park and going to his dorm. I was going to apologize to him for acting the way I did. When I got there, he wasn’t there. Some guy that stayed in his dorm said he saw him leave about twenty minutes earlier with some blonde girl he’d never seen before." She paused for a moment as a single tear rolled down her cheek. "That’s why I haven’t talked to him."

Lonie sat down beside her and put her arm around her shoulder, "Oh Jaim. I’m so sorry. Did you find out who that blonde was? Maybe she was just a friend or something."

"No, I don’t want to talk to him. I just want to forget I ever met him and get on with my life."

"Get on with your life how Jaimie? All you do is sit up here and read your books all day long. I know you’re hurting right now, but I think you should at least talk to Lance."

Jaimie shook her head vehemently, "No. He broke my heart Lonie. I don’t ever want to see him again."

Lonie sighed, knowing Jaimie wasn’t going to listen to reason. "Okay. I won’t push you. Why don’t you get dressed and we can go to lunch."

"No thanks Lonie."

"Will you at least agree to go out to the new club with me Saturday night?"

Jaimie laughed, "Okay okay. I’ll go out with you Saturday I promise."

"Good. Remember I’m here for you girl always."

"I know Lonie. Thanks." Jaimie smiled sadly before returning her attention to her book once more. Before Lonie left her room, she had already made up her mind. She was going to talk to Lance since Jaimie obviously wasn’t going to. She knew in her heart that Jaimie really loved him and that Lance loved her too. Lonie had a hard time believing Lance would cheat on her, but she knew one thing for sure. She was going to find out.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Lonie was at Lance’s dorm within half an hour. She spotted Lance across the courtyard hugging a blonde girl and kissing her on the cheek. The two seemed to be very friendly with each other, and Lonie’s blood began to boil. She marched towards him with her hands on her hips.

"So it was all true." she spat.

"Lonie…" Lance looked over at her surprised. "What’s true?"

"You cheating on Jaimie with some blonde slut."

"I never cheated on Jaimie. EVER!" he yelled back. "I love her. I would never do that to her."

"Then who was that?" Lonie pointed in the blonde’s direction.

"That is my sister Stacey. She stopped by to see me since she was in the city."

Lonie felt a blush creep up her cheeks, "Your sister?"

"Yes my sister. What is all this about Lonie?"

"Let’s sit down for a minute okay." Lonie pointed towards the nearby park bench. Once they were both sitting down, she began to explain. "Okay, I know you remember the argument you and Jaimie got into the last day you were together right?"

"Of course I do. How could I forget it? That’s why she’s refusing to see me or speak to me." he frowned.

Lonie shook her head, "No. That’s not why."

"Then why?"

"I talked to her after you left and told her that she was wrong to be so upset with you and that I was glad you told me the truth about Josh. She realized she shouldn’t have gotten angry at you and came over to talk to you that same day. When she got here, you weren’t here. Some guy in your building told her you left about twenty minutes before with some blonde girl he’d never seen before and that you two looked very ‘close.’ She thought you were cheating on her Lance. That’s why she’s refusing to see you or talk to you. She thinks you broke her heart."

Lance buried his face in his hands, "Stacey came over that day. She took me out to lunch and tried to cheer me up. Lonie I swear to you. I never cheated on her. You believe me don’t you?"

"Yeah I believe you Lance, but Jaimie is the one you have to convince, and right now she’s still refusing to talk to you or see you."

"Tell me what to do Lonie. I miss her so much. It’s killing me to know she really thinks I did this to her."

"Well, she doesn’t know I’m here. If she knew I was planning on coming over she’d probably tied me to the chair. I did get her to agree to go out with me Saturday night to the new club ‘The Cove.’ Why don’t you be there that night and try to talk to her then?"

"Do you think she’ll believe me?"

"Do you think your sister will agree to come with you?"

"I know she would. I hope this works Lonie. I’m miserable without her."

"I hope it works too. I want my best friend back, and I want her to be happy. I know she was happy with you."

Lance pulled her to him for a quick hug, "Thanks Lon. I really appreciate it."

"You’re welcome." she smiled up at him, knowing in her heart she had done the right thing for her friend’s sake.

Alison hated to see her time at home come to an end. She lay in Jason’s arms after making love for the last time before she was to go back to New York the next day. She could feel like there was something important Jason was going to ask her. In her heart, she just knew he was going to ask her to marry him, but much to her dismay there was no mention of marriage. Somehow as they said there good-byes the next day at the airport Alison felt like they were saying good-bye forever.

"Why do I have the feeling this isn’t the usual see you in a few months good-bye? I know there’s something you need to tell me Jason. Please tell me what’s going on."

He looked down at his hands for a moment before meeting her eyes once again, "I’m going away Ali."

"Going away? Where?"

"Next week I take vows."

"Vows? Vows for what? Are you marrying someone else?"

"No. There’s no one else Alison. I’m going to become a priest."

Alison was taken aback by Jason’s words, "What?"

"I want to live my life serving God. I know this is what I was meant to do."

"What about marriage and kids? Don’t you want that Jason? I thought we’d have that together someday." Alison fought the tears that were threatening to fall.

"I’ve thought about this long and hard. Those things are not for me. I just feel like my purpose is to serve God. I never wanted to hurt you Ali. This wasn’t an easy decision to make."

"How could you decide something like this without even talking about it with me?"

"It’s my life Alison. My decisions." he replied calmly. Alison just stared up at him, no longer recognizing him as the man she had loved. "I’m sorry Alison. I think sooner or later you will realize this was the right choice for the both of us."

"Whatever you say Jason." Alison whispered as she turned to board the plane. She never once looked back, knowing her world would never be the same again.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Saturday night got there before they knew it. Alison was had gotten home the day before, and told the girls everything that happened when she was home. She had reluctantly agreed to go out with them that night, in hopes that it would bring her spirits up. Katie and Peter were going to meet them at the club after they went to dinner. Lonie looked over at Jaimie and Alison as they rode to the club and sighed to herself. Both of them looked so very unhappy. She hoped that by the night was over, at least one of them would be happy once again. As soon as they walked into the club, Lonie began to scan the crowd for Lance and his sister Stacey, but she didn’t see them anywhere. They managed to find a table and sat down to order their drinks. Not long after their drinks arrived, Lance walked through the door with Stacey by his side. Lonie’s eyes locked with his across the room, and without even speaking they knew what the other was thinking.

"Oh my…" Lonie said, drawing both Alison’s and Jaimie’s attention to the door. As soon as Jaimie’s eyes fell on Lance and the girl beside him her heart felt like it was breaking all over again. Jaimie stood from the table and bolted for the terrace before Lance and his sister could even approach. He followed her outside.

"Jaimie wait…." he began.

"Don’t…don’t even try to explain yourself. I knew what was going on all along, I just didn’t expect to see you out with her."

"I’m going to explain and you’re going to listen to me."

Jaimie turned to look at him, anger replacing the hurt that was once in her eyes. "Excuse me? I don’t have to stand here and listen to anything you have to say you lying cheating bastard."

"You are going to listen to me Jaimie. I have never lied to you, EVER, and I don’t intend to start now. I never cheated on you Jaimie. That girl I came here with tonight is my sister Stacey. She’s also the girl the guy in my dorm saw me leave with that day."

"And I’m supposed to just take your word for it?"

Lance sighed, "I really didn’t expect you to believe me. That’s why I asked her to come with me tonight. Stacey?" He reached out his hand for the blonde to join him outside. She stepped into the light, and Jaimie couldn’t help but see the resemblance. Did she dare believe him?

"Hi Jaimie," Stacey smiled. "It’s nice to finally meet you. You’re all Lance talks about."

Jaimie swallowed hard, trying to digest what she had just heard. "H…hi." she reached out her hand to shake Stacey’s hand. "It’s nice to meet you too."

"Lance loves you very much Jaimie. He’s been a pain in my ass ever since you two had your little disagreement. Please take him back before I have to kill him myself."

"Thanks sis. I love you too." he replied wryly.

"You know I love you Lance, but admit it. You’ve been pretty tough to take this last month."

"Yeah I know." he looked away, not meeting Jaimie’s gaze.

"Listen, I think you two need to talk so I’m going to go now. I hope to see you again soon Jaimie."

"Bye." she choked out, struggling with her emotions. She didn’t know whether or not to laugh or cry. "Lance….I….I’m so sorry." she managed to get out before collapsing into tears. Lance immediately went to her and pulled her into his embrace, holding her tight.

"Shhhh, don’t cry baby. I’m sorry too."

"What do you have to be sorry for?" her words were muffled from her face being buried against his chest.

Lance laughed, "I don’t know, everything I guess. Promise me one thing Jaim."

"What?"

"Promise me you’ll talk to me before assuming anything again. I don’t know if I could go through this again." he pulled her away from his chest so he could look into her eyes.

She smiled, "I promise. I love you Lance. I really do."

"I love you too." he smiled back down at her before their lips met in a sweet kiss. Jaimie clung to him afraid that if she let him go she would lose him again, but in her heart she knew she was where she was supposed to be. In his arms.

Back inside the club, Katie and Peter had finally arrived, but Peter was already very drunk. Lonie could tell Katie was very uncomfortable with the way Peter was acting. She had never seen him act this way before. He began to get very aggressive, trying to kiss her and grope her. Katie kept pushing him off, but Peter would have none of it.

"Stop it Peter!" Katie yelled at him, pushing him away from her hard. "I want to go home NOW!"

"Bullshit! We just got here. I ain’t leavin’" he slurred.

"Fine stay here, but I’m leaving." Katie grabbed her purse and began to make her way outside. Peter grabbed her arm, gripping it so tight Katie gasped from the pain. "Let me go Peter. You’re hurting me."

"You ain’t leavin me Katie."

"I’m going to take a taxi home. You’re drunk. I’m not going to stay here with you."

Justin walked in at that very moment with Josh. The mere sight of Katie after so long without her almost brought tears to his eyes, but the moment he saw she was in distress, his happiness at seeing her soon turned to anger at the man that was hurting her. He stalked towards them and pushed Peter away from her.

"Listen asshole. She obviously doesn’t want to be here with you, so I suggest you back off."

"Who the hell you tink you are?" he tettered back and forth as he glared at Justin.

"It doesn’t matter who I am. Katie’s not going anywhere with you. I suggest you get a taxi home and sleep it off pal."

Peter angrily dismissed them with the wave of his hand and walked back into the crowd. Katie just stood there in shock for a moment before she finally recovered. She didn’t even bother to look up at Justin.

"Thanks." she replied coldly as she continued to make her way to the door. Once she was outside, Justin came up to her from behind. "Please Katie. I have to talk to you."

"There’s nothing to talk about Justin."

"Please." he continued to beg.

Katie turned to him and let him have it, "You want to talk? Okay let’s talk about how you humiliated me, let’s talk about how you broke my heart, hell let’s talk about the weather, but don’t try to stand there and justify what you did. Nothing you say can ever make what you did okay."

"I know I was wrong Katie, but you have to understand something. That guy you heard on the train was a guy I used to hang out with. I’m the first one to admit that I screwed up a lot when I was younger. I made bad choices and hung out with the wrong crowd. Shane was a part of the crowd. Fortunately enough for me I met Josh and Lance and they helped me put my life back together. Not long after we started dating I ran into Shane again. He saw me leave your apartment one night and he kept on and on at me about how I was trying to nail Ms. Park Avenue and he just knew I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere with you. The only reason I agreed to his bet was to get him off my back and out of my face. I never ever meant to hurt you Katie. That’s why I told him I lost the bet. After we made love for the first time that weekend we went camping, I went to him, gave him the money, and told him I lost."

"What? Why did you do that if you really won?"

"Because…..because you were more important to me than some stupid juvenile bet. Nothing can change what happened or what I did, but please Katie. You have to understand that I never meant to hurt you. I love you Katie. I swear that’s the truth." Somehow Katie knew Justin was telling the truth, but she just needed more time to think about everything that had happened. "I never dreamed that someone as wonderful as you would ever come into my life. I don’t know what I will do if I lost you forever."

Katie’s heart ached at his heartfelt speech, "I just…please give me some time Justin. I’m so confused right now."

"I promise to give you some space. I just had to tell you how I feel and explain what I did. Like I said, I know it doesn’t excuse any of it, but I hope you understand a little bit better."

"Thank you Justin. Goodnight." she smiled softly as she climbed into the taxi not really sure what was going to happen for them next.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

There was a moment of awkward silence at the table for Lonie, Josh, and Alison. Lonie hadn’t seen Josh in over a month since he broke up with her.

"So…where’s Caroline tonight?" Lonie asked.

"She had a meeting so she couldn’t come."

"How are things between you two?"

"They are going very well. I’m happy." he smiled.

"I really am happy for you Josh. I wish only the best for you."

"I know you do Lonie. I can’t thank you enough for being so understanding."

"You’re welcome." she smiled. Then she saw him. He was across the room, looking directly at her. His big brown eyes burning into her. Her body tingled all over from the mere look in his eyes. He slowly approached their table, never taking his eyes off of her.

"Hey Lonie."

"Hi Joey. How are you?"

"I’m doing okay. You?"

"Hanging in there. Where’s your girlfriend….Josie was it?"

"I really don’t know. We broke up a while back."

"Oh I’m sorry to hear that."

"I’m not." he smiled down at her. "Dance with me?"

Lonie’s pulse began to quicken, "Okay." The moment they touched again for the first time in months, a bolt of electricity shot through their bodies. Time had done nothing to what they felt for each other. It was still just as strong as it had always been.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When Josh left the club that night, he decided to go by Caroline’s hotel room to see her. He had decided to ask her to marry him again, and he didn’t want to waste anymore time. He wanted to ask her TONIGHT! He knocked on her door waiting for her to answer. She was wearing her robe, but he didn’t think anything of it since it was after midnight already. He kissed her lips softly before walking inside.

"Hey. I know it’s late, but I needed to ask you something, and I didn’t want to wait a moment longer."

"Is something wrong Josh?"

"No nothing’s wrong. Everything is just right he grinned." He bent down on one knee and held one of her hands in his. "Caroline, we’ve been through so much together. I think this means we were really meant to be. Please say you’ll do me the honor of being my wife."

Caroline was speechless, she really didn’t know what to say. Suddenly the door to the bedroom opened and a half dressed man walked out, "Caroline? Who is this man?" He spoke with an Italian accent.

Josh’s heart fell when the realization of what was happening hit him, "Caroline…"

She stared down at him with tears in her eyes, "I’m so sorry Josh. Stephan was my boyfriend from Italy. We broke up and I moved back here. I really thought I was over him and I wanted you and I to be together. I swear I did, but Stephan showed up tonight and I realized that I still love him. I’m so sorry." she burst into tears "I swear I never meant for this to happen."

Josh slowly stood, calmly walked over to the door, and left Caroline behind once again. This time he swore to himself it would be the last time he would trust her with his heart. She had broken it for the second time, and he vowed there wouldn’t be a third.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Over the next few days, Lonie and Joey had slowly begun to see each other once again. They both knew they still loved each other, but they still wanted to take things slowly. They hoped that this time they would be able to make it work between them. Jaimie and Lance were happy again now that they were back together. Jaimie even admitted to Lance what had happened between her and Chris. She was terrified that Lance would think less of her, but he calmly accepted what she told him and said that it was all in the past. As long as she had no true feelings for Chris that none of that mattered anymore. Much to Alison’s dismay, she was already a week late for her period. She said nothing to the other roommates about her fears. She opted to go to the drug store, buy a pregnancy test, and go through this on her own. Unfortunately, the news wasn’t good. She was pregnant, and she had no clue what she was going to do about it.

Chapter Thirteen

A few days after he last saw Caroline, Josh made the decision to go try to win Lonie back. He felt like such a fool for breaking up with her for Caroline. He should have known better. He found her at her apartment, sitting on the steps reading a book.

"Hey Lonie." he smiled as he approached.

"Hey Josh." She replied happily, giving Josh the incentive he needed to do what he planned to do. She stood and gave him a warm hug. "How’ve you been?"

"I’ve been better." he mumbled. "Listen Lonie. I have to tell you something."

"What?"

"Lonie, I’m so sorry that I ever broke up with you to start seeing Caroline again. I realize my mistake now, and I want to give us another try. Please tell me it’s not too late." At first Lonie was too shocked to say anything. This was the last thing she expected to come out of his mouth. Before she had a chance to say anything, Josh pulled her to him and kissed her lips hard. Lonie almost immediately pushed him away. As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw Joey staring at them in shock from across the road. He had a bouquet of flowers in his hands, but the look on his face was of pure agony. He turned and started to walk away, but Lonie knew she had to stop him. She had to explain.

"Josh it’s over. I’m back with Joey now. I love him."

Josh looked down at his hands for a moment, "I’m sorry Lonie. I didn’t realize."

"I know you didn’t, but I have to stop him. I have to make him understand there’s nothing between us."

"I want to explain it to him. Come on," Josh grabbed her hand and they both started to run across the park after Joey. They finally found him sitting alone on one of the park benches, the bouquet of flowers still in his hands, but tears streaked down his face.

"Joey…please I have to explain." she began breathless.

"Explain what? You don’t want to be with me anymore." he whispered.

"Joey, I’m Josh. Everything you saw back there was all me. Lonie was just as surprised that I kissed her as you were to see us kiss. I swear to you that Lonie is totally innocent. It was all me. I didn’t know you two were seeing each other again. If I’d have known I would have never kissed her."

Joey looked up into Lonie’s eyes, trying desperately to see if what he was saying was real, "Is that true Lonie?"

"Yes," her voice cracked with emotions. "I love you Joey. I don’t want to lose you again."

Joey quickly stood and pulled her into his embrace, "I love you so much Lonie. I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you again."

"You won’t lose me. I swear."

Joey smiled down at her before bending down on one knee, "This was what I was planning to do about ten minutes ago. Lonie, I love you more than anything in the world. Please say you’ll stay with me always. Say you’ll be my wife."

Tears were streaming down Lonie’s cheeks as she looked into his big brown eyes, "YES!" she yelled as she flung herself into his embrace.

Josh smiled, and reached his hand out for Joey to shake his hand. "Congrats man. You’re very lucky to have the love of a woman like her."

"I know I am. Believe me I know."

The three of them began to make their way back to the apartment. Once they got there, they saw an ambulance in front of the building. Jaimie was running down the stairs frantically talking to whoever it was lying on the stretcher. Lonie rushed over to her to find out what was going on.

"Jaimie! What’ wrong?"

Jaimie tried to explain what was happening, but her tears were coming so hard she could barely talk, "I…I came home and found Alison on the floor. She tried to overdose on a bottle of sleeping pills."

Lonie and Jaimie held onto each other while they cried for their fallen friend. Joey drove them both to the hospital, and called Lance to have him meet them there. He knew Jaimie would need him for support. Joey also called Katie and told her what was going on. Something also made Josh go with them. He felt drawn to this Alison somehow, and he couldn’t explain why. Josh also called Justin. Even though he knew Justin and Katie weren’t actually together at the moment, he knew Katie would need him there. About an hour after Alison was taken to the hospital, the doctors came out to tell them what was going on.

"Hi. I’m Dr. Connors. Are you Alison’s friends?"

"Yes we are. Is she going to be okay?"

"Normally we wouldn’t discuss her medical condition to anyone but her relatives, but since you are the only ones she has here I’m going to make an exception. We pumped her stomach to get rid of the pills she had taken. Unfortunately she did lose her baby."

"Baby?" Jaimie asked, surprised.

"Yes. She was pregnant. I assume none of you knew of that fact."

"No, she never told us anything." Lonie whispered, trying to let what he just told her sink in.

"Can we see her?" Katie asked.

"In about an hour. I want her to rest right now. The nurse will inform you when she can have visitors. She’s a very lucky girl. If you hadn’t have found her so quickly, she wouldn’t have made it at all either."

"Thank you doctor." Joey shook his hand before pulling Lonie into his arms to comfort her.

"I can’t believe she didn’t tell us." Katie said. Justin put his arm around her, uncertain if she would want him to. She leaned against him, thankful that he was there with her to help her through this.

By the time the nurse came to get them, everyone had stepped away from the waiting room except Josh. He asked the nurses to inform the others when they got back, but he decided to go in to talk to Alison by himself. When he entered the room, it was so quiet. Alison lay alone in the room staring up at the ceiling. She didn’t even acknowledge the fact that anyone had walked in.

"Alison?" It wasn’t until then that she looked at him. "Do you remember me?"

"Yeah," she replied hoarsely. "Josh right?"

"Right. I hope you don’t mind that I’m here. The others are here too, but they weren’t in the waiting room when the nurses came. I thought I could keep you company until they got here."

"No, it’s okay."

"How are you feeling?"

"I really don’t know what I’m feeling to be honest."

"Why did you do it Alison?"

"I don’t know." she fought the tears that threatened. "I just felt so overwhelmed with everything that was happening to me. My boyfriend broke up with me to become a priest, then I find out I’m pregnant with his child. It was just too much. I snapped."

"Wow, I’m so sorry. I’ve just recently gone through a bad break up myself. I was engaged to my high school sweetheart, but she moved away to Italy and broke off our engagement. I was devastated. Then I started seeing Lonie. She’s a great girl you know, but Caroline came back and said she regretting leaving me and wanted to get back together. Stupid me agrees to start seeing her again. I find out just about a week ago that she was still in love with her ex-boyfriend from Italy. I had just proposed to her again when he walked into the room half naked. Talk about a shocker." he tried to laugh to lighten the mood.

"I’m sorry. That must have been very painful. Not only to go through once, but twice with the same person."

"It was, but you live and learn you know. I’ve always been a true believer that everything happens for a reason. We may not like the hand we are dealt to begin with but we have to play it out to see what else comes our way."

Alison laughed softly, "I guess that’s one way to put it." She didn’t know what it was about him, but she felt so safe and secure with him nearby. "Thank you." she whispered softly.

"For what?"

"For being here. For understanding and not judging me."

"Who am I to judge?" he smiled, taking her hand in his. Somehow they both knew right then and there that everything else that had happened in their lives had led them to where they were now, and finally they were both dealt a good hand.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"Come on, we’re going to be late!" Lance yelled through the door to Jaimie’s room hoping she would hurry up and finish getting ready for Valerie’s wedding.

"I’m coming. Jeez." he heard her yell back at him, causing him to chuckle. Joey, Lance, Justin, and Josh stood in their living room waiting for them to come out. Justin and Katie had started seeing each other again, and Josh and Alison thought they were better to start off as friends at first. They both knew they could be more, but neither one wanted to rush it. They were just happy to be together. Once they were at the wedding, Lance couldn’t help but be a little nervous about Jaimie and Chris seeing each other again for the first time since they broke off their affair. In his heart he knew Jaimie loved him, but he still couldn’t help but be a little cautious. As they sat there listening to Valerie and Chris exchange their vows, he had to ask her. "Do you wish it was you up there instead of Valerie?"

Jaimie looked over at him and smiled, "Only if it was you up there instead of Chris." Lance sighed in relief and kissed her softly. He knew that would be them one day, and that thought filled him with so much happiness. Joey and Lonie had decided to wait about a year before they got married. It looked as if things were finally going their way. They were learning to live and grow together happily ever after.
