Welcome to the Wines of NelsonNelson is located at the top of the South Island to the west of Marlborough. The region is a paradise for potters, painters, alternative life-stylers, foodies and wine tourists. It enjoys a lot of sun, has golden sand beaches, beautiful scenery, fertile plains and snow capped ranges.A significant proportion of the Region's economic activity concerns the growing, processing and eating of fruit, vegetables, livestock and seafood. Of the 200 hectares planted in grapes almost 25% is in Sauvignon Blanc, 20% in Chardonnay, just under 20% in Riesling and the remainder in varieties including Pinot Noir. Wineries in the Nelson region are picturesque. Many also offer the chance to taste local wines with food in well appointed restaurants. On 28 January 2001 Nelson will celebrate the success of its food and wines at the Taste Nelson Experiencce. The festival will feature local restaurants and wineries and live entertainment. Neudorf Vineyard is situated in the Upper Moutere Valley of Nelson. It is credited with producing one of New Zealand's very best Chardonnay's. UK wine writer for the Independent, Anthony Rose, described Tim Finn's Chardonnay as "New Zealand's convincing answer to premier cru Puligny Montrachet". It is a powerful Chardonnay made from ripe fruit and exposed to the softening effects of melolactic fermentation. The Chardonnay is competitively priced, cellars well and is exported to the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Australia, Singapore and the United States of America. If visiting the winery over summer, enjoy a glass of Neudorf Chardonnay at the winery's own restaurant. |

Ruby Bay is a very small winery with a great location. It overlooks the beautiful Tasman Bay, gets lots of sun, has clay gravel soils and misses out on the worst of the frosts. The fruit of its vineyard ripens early, and is made by Anita Ewart-Clay into her award winning Chardonnay wine that is smooth and toasty. To make the winery even more appealing to the visitor, it has a restaurant that is open over summer. |
