X-Men Bloopers

Bryan Singer shows off his gag reel.

July 27, 2000

As we've already reported, X-Men director Bryan Singer today addressed a packed house of con-goers, answering questions about the movie. But he also brought along a special treat: about half way through his Q&A session, he stopped to show three bloopers from the production's gag reels. Unfortunately no pictures or filming were allowed during this but we can tell you what we saw and hope that these some day might end up on a DVD somewhere.

There's a scene where Wolverine is driving along the country road in Manitoba, smoking a stogie and looking menacing. All the sudden you see this guy on wires outside of the car window, "flying by." It's funny but it takes a second for Hugh Jackman to notice, but when he looks over the expression on his face is priceless. It's Bryan Singer flying by! To his credit, Jackman didn't drop his stogie.

A second blooper showed Professor X and Wolverine talking, after Wolverine had accidentally cut Rogue and then been knocked out by her powers. He's lying in the hospital and he and Charles have a serious conversation, then Xavier majestically rolls out of the room, only to bump his wheelchair into an obstruction, making a most undignified racket. But like a consummate professional, Patrick Stewart played it off, keeping his posture upright and kept his chair rolling right out the door.

The final reel was a special treat, hinting of things to come. At one point in the movie, three of the X-Men are rushing down the hall to assemble somewhere, when suddenly who should come running up behind them in a complete red and blue costume? Spider-Man! As soon as the actors saw him, they all burst out laughing and Spider-Man quickly ran away. The audience at the con loved it and it's obvious that everyone is looking forward to the Spider-Man film.
