A Light in the Dark

I cannot say for certain when it was
that I first saw you;
nor can I say when it was
that I first loved you.
There was no time
when love hit me like a sudden realization.
Perhaps this is the nature of love :
a flower does not burst from the ground
in a glory of splendor and beauty -
it must take time to reach to the sun.
So then, is love.

At first, perhaps, just two souls,
in a familiarity joined -
two souls finding joy in a dark place,
and turning some of that darkness into light.

Then, perhaps, someday that room
will be filled with a light so bright,
and perhaps that is love -
the absence of darkness in an empty room
the absence of cold in a winter storm
the absence of fear in the face of tragedy.

For what is an empty room to me, if you are there?
What is a winter storm, if your arms are there to warm me?
What is a tragedy, when you will be with me still?
What can I fear if you are at my side?

I cannot say when it was
that I first loved you.
But I know that this light is not mine;
perhaps this is our light.

A Smile

A smile costs nothing, but gives much.
It enriches those who give it. It takes but a moment,
but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.
None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it,
and none is so poor that he cannot be made richer by it.
A smile creates happiness in the home,
promotes good will in business, and is the cornerstone of friendship.
It can perk up the weary, bring cheer to the discouraged,
sunshine to the sad, and is nature's best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen,
for it is something that is of no value to anyone
until it is given away.
When people are too tired to give you a smile, give them one of yours.
No one needs a smile so much as he who has none to give.

seems so natural and complete,
like we were always
meant to be together

Relationships are never easy,
and you and I have had our share

But together we made it.
