O.K. here it is, the album that started all this Michinel Stanley stuff, ... No, It waan't called
"Rosewood Bitters", that was just a sign that the art director put up in that great old train
station in Greeley,Colorado. Most people just refer to this as "The Blue Ablum"... Check
out the flannel shirt: very pre-Seattle don't you think?... The now-legendary Tumbleweed
Records was a Denver-based Iabel started by my good friend and mentor Bill Szymczyk and
Larry Ray. .. It was all very counterculture and set up in a great old house an Gilpin Street...
Bill had signed and produced Sllk, a group I was in for ABC Records in 1969. .. 8oon afler, I
left the group and he left ABC to form Tumbleweed... He called me up and asked if I'd like to
do a record.. After taking about four scoonds to say yes, we started making plans. . . Bill
said that he would put the band together; a collection of Denver's finest and recent transplant
Joe Walsh (who had just left the James Gang to form Barnstorm...still, to this day, one of
the best bands ever)... One problem: the first artist that had signed to Tumbleweed was a
Canadian singer/ songwriter named Arthur Gee. Now, Gee happens to also be my real last
name. Seven artists on a label and two of them named Gee. .. I don't think so (unless the
label is Chinese)... So, literally ten minutes before signing the contract I was told that I
would have to have another name... Szymczyk asked me what my middle name was, I said
Stanley and it was determined that this was not going to affend anyone So Michael Stanley
was born at the age of 22 amidst a flurry of American flag rolling papers... We rehearsed in
Denver for a week, then were off to the Record Plant in Los Angeles to record... The sessions
were alot of fun with Szymczyk and Walsh leading the way... Joe even loaned me his
orange Gretsch and his multi-colored platform boots to cut the basic track for "Rock N' Roll
Man" (Hey, ambiance is everthing!)... With the basic tracks in hand, I returned to Cleveland
to await word of when we would do the vocals and overdubs... Little did I know that, due
to legal problems with Paramount (the parent company), it would be a year before recording
would continue... Finally we went to the Hit Factory in New York to wrap it up... Some
random thoughts on the tunes:
ROSEWOOD BITTERS... I've never quite go a grip on why so may people liked this one,
but, hey, what do I know... Todd Rundgren played clavinet and, if you listen real hard to the
very end of end of the song, you can hear a NYC cab driver's radio through the clavinet's pick up...
Also, I believe this is the first recorded example of Joe Walsh on slide guitar and a great
signature line...
DENVER RAIN... No memories of this one... Probably a cheap attempt at procuring Rocky
Mountain airplay...
LOUISVILLE AD... I still like this one... Rick Derringer played steel on it, and in the right
hands, I still think it could be a county hit...
A FRIEND AND NOTHING MORE... An ode for the "nice guys" who lose the girl to
some cretin....
ROCK N' ROLL MAN... An attempt at a classic Chuck Berry story... The Walsh solo still
gets me!
MOVING RIGHT ALONG... Hey, let's jam! My first introduction to the multi-talented Joe
Vitale who plays some great flute...
RESURRECTION... Absolutely no memory of this one, but I still like it...
GOOD TIME CHARLIE... Inspired by a Cleveland street musician who used to play outside
the old May Company building... A happening and very high cowboy!
SONG FOR A FRIEND SOON GONE...Written as a goodbye to my college comrades, two of
whom have since died... With much love and affection for Wilton, Steve, Bruce and Ben...
SUBTERRANEAN HOMESICK BLUES... A very different slant on the great Dylan tune...
I nicked the arrangement from Terry Boylan
So, there you have it, the first Michael Stanley album...
Very special thanks and affection to Joe Walsh and Bill Szymczyk for their talent, energy and belief!
