Welcome.
The year was 1978 and with the punk movement in full swing (or was that schwing), The
Michael Stanley Band headed off to Monmouth, Wales and London England to record
our Cabin Fever album... What follows are just some random memories from a very random
mind... It was our first album for Arista, and our first album with new lead guitarist
Gary Markasky (replacing original member Jonah Koslen who had decided to pursue
a solo career but soon started band called Breathless, that put out two fine but overlooked
albums on EMI- America. . .Check em out if you can find them). It was the first studio album
album for keyboardist, songwniter, singer, Bob Pelander (who, immediately upon reaching
England, lost his voice for the duration of the project). It was to be the last album for
original bassist Daniel Peccio who left to pursue a career in race car driving... Originally
we were all set to record in Toronto with producer Bob Ezrin at the helm (and still to this
day I have no idea why that went down the tubes) but ended up in the British Isles with
then - unknown producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange in charge... Homesickness and
sending the road crew on a seven hour round trip to London for Big Macs (does that say
something about English food or what ?)... Rockfield Studios: a great funky live-in place
built in the stables of the Rolls Estate (as in Rolls Royce) and the place where Dave Edmunds
made so many great records... Covering the control room with pictures of Debbie
Harry... Sheep... A great 30th birthday party for yours truly at a Welsh castle... More
sheep... Going to see Elvis Costello at a completely out-of-control punk club in Cardiff
...An awe-inspiring string session at Wessex Studios in London under the direction of
ELO's arranger Lou Clark... More sheep... Was England ready for "The Ant" (see back
over, and no that isn't me, it's Gary) ... Uh oh, more sheep... Sharing Trident Studio
with Genesis (who were working on their first post-Peter Gabriel album) and some
truly crazed French disco producers ... Getting to know London, my favorite city in the
world... And last but not least, "Mutt"' Lange, a jovial, creative, multi-talented slave driver
who taught us a lot, had the loudest car stereo in the world, and made us a better
band... So, there you go...Welcome to Cabin Fever... Enjoy!
Cleveland/Spring 92
P.S. Enclosed is a bonus track: an alternate version of "Why Should Love Be This Way" ... It
was the original version, but Clive Davis didn't like it so we re-did the lead vocal, piano
and the mix to come up with the one that was on the album. I still prefer this one but
hey, you make the call!
