Welcome to the land of re-issues...
After recording Cabin Fever in England and Wales, we switched gears com-
pletely and headed to the City of Angels to record the follow up abum for Arista
Greatest Hints (a snappy ironic title we thought although not too many seemed
to get the joke). .. at the helm was producer Harry Maslin who had just finished
some real nice work on David Bowie's Young Americans LP... because Cabin
Fever had been a very keyboard oriented album (for us), upon touring we had
added a second keyboardist and vocalist, Kevin Raleigh. .. Kevin, a veteran of
the Cleveland music scene arrived behind the recommendation of our drum-
mer Tommy Dobeck and, besides being a fine singer and player, turned out to
be a very talented songwriter as well. . Greatest Hints marks his first offerings
in that department and his contributions as another lead singer in the band would
surface on the next album Heartland...
This was also the first album our new bassist Michael Gismondi (a Youngstown
native) was in on. .. Giz's musicianship pushed the band to another level and Giz
was such a genuinely nice person that next to him, Tommy looked like Attila The
Hun (not an easy thing to do) . .. Bob has called Greatest Hints the "Bells From
Hell" album and it's Phil Spector-ish drift can only be blamed on me (although
I still really like it)... if it rattled or clanged, it's on here...it was recorded at
Golden Sound Studios on Santa Monica Blvd. which used to be the old Radio
Recorders, where Elvis recorded "Jailhouse Rock" and Sinatra did much of his
seminal work...needless to say, the place had a vibe... the studio was located
in front of Orson Welles' offices and one of my fondest memories of the sessions
is Citizen Kane himself dropping by to ask us to turn it down just a bit. ..is that
cool or what? Special thanks to producer Harry Maslin for his talent and friend-
ship and believe me Harry, we didn't know what was in the cup! Turn this one
up loud and I hope you enjoy it!
