Hey Sportsfans...
If there was ever a pivotal album in this band's career, Heartland definitely
it... After Greatest Hints we were unceremoniously dropped by Arista (was anyone
ever ceremoniously dropped?) and were having no luck finding a new label ...
Things were looking bleak for your heroes and it was unfortunate since the band, as a
unit, was really coming together on all levels... The very real threat of having to
break-up was weighing heavily upon all concerned... It was decided that we would
give it one last shot on our own; producing ourselves for the first time, and doing
one last album the way we wanted to do it... IF we could then find a label, great... If
we couldn't, we would release the LP locally and try to recoup our investment... We
cut a deal with a brand new studio in town to be the first group to record there... In
exchange for a low rate, we would be their musical guinea pigs so they could find
out what worked and what didn't ... Working the night shift, we started recording in
April of 1980, and with the exception of the studio's flaws and our engineer literally
falling asleep on the board from exhaustion, this was a great time ... To make a long
story short, EMI-America bought the finished project and we went on to record four
albums for them ... When it came time to mix, we enlisted crazed Canadian producer
Fred Mollin as a fresh set of ears ... He, in turn, brought in engineer Michael Verdick
to engineer the mixes and their help is greatly appreciated ... Also, the "Big Man"
Clarence Clemons came in to play sax and was a true joy to work with ... No one
pushes more air than the "Big Man"! ... Heartland went on to spend over a year on
the Billboard charts and gave us our first "hit" with Kevin's "He Can't Love You" ...
This album turned things around for MSB and holds a very special place in the
hearts of the entire band ... Special thanks to Tommy Dobeck who convinced me, on
the last day of the sessions, that we should record "Lover" ... If I had to pick just one
album to represent MSB, I think that this would be it ... Although it isn't our best
"sounding" album, it is the most "us" and it had the right attitude; and if rock n' roll
isn't an attitude, then what is it? Crank it up and have as much fun as we did!

Cleveland / Summer 92
P.S. Enclosed are two live bonus tracks ("Lover" and "He Can't Love You") recorded
at Blossom Music Center in Ohio, August 15 & 16, 1984... The lineup for the band
was the same with the exception of Danny Powers (lead gultar and vocals) replacing
Gary Markasky... Special thanks to the Blossom Falthful for great vocals!
