Greetings from the North Coast
O.K., was the you've from got a Left Coast, a Right Coast, and now you've got North Coast...
This was the follow-up album to Heartland (which, of course, is now one of the cornerstones
of your CD collection, right?) and for the first time in our career we were in
the enviable position of having our record company clamoring for a new album...
Heartland had been a break-through album for us and we had been on the road for
most of the year... All of a sudden we were supposed to have another record ready, so
most of these songs were written on the road... It was recorded at Suma Recording, a
great little funky studio built in an an old old fishing lodge about 30 miles west of Cleveland
and was co-produced by Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin and Hendrix veteran, Eddie
Kramer (a wonderful and wild bearded crazo)... And, after establishing the tenor sax
as a big part of our sound on the last album (with Clarence Clemons), it marked the
addition of a great local horn player, Rick Bell, to the band... Not as successful as
Heartland, I still like this one a lot and about half the tunes became staples of the live
show over the following years... Another big kick for me was having Norman Seef
shoot the photos for the cover (he was famous in band lore for the "floating head" shot)
... It was mixed at Electric Lady Studios in the East Village (very near what would one
day become the New York landmark, the corporate monolithic headquarters of Razor &
Tie)... Some brain cells were lost while recording (and especially mixing) this album,
but hey, it's only rock 'n' roll and hopefully you like it. .. Once again, turn it up loud and
amaze your friends at parties!
Michael Stanley
Cleveland, Summer 92
P.S. - If you're looking for some sense of purpose in all this, check out "Let's Hear It"...
That's what it's all about! Also enclosed are two live bonus cuts ("Somewherel In The
Night" and "Shut Up And Leave Me Alone")... They were recorded at Blossom Music
Center in Ohio, August 15 & 16, 1984... By this time, Gary Markasky and Rick Bell had
left the band and the lead guitar duty was in the hands of Danny Powers
