FALCONS HISTORY

2004...The Falcons were born. This is the first season of 4th graders being able to participate in Rec. League Football.

In 1993, the Rec Leagues consisted of six teams of 5th/6th graders that practiced and played their games at Kaufman Field on touch league fields by touch league rules. There also consisted four 7th/8th grade teams that practiced at Madison, and played at the high school.

That changed in 1994 when the 8th grade became its own division, and the 5th/6th grade league moved to Madison as well and also began playing at the high school using high school rules. 7th graders were divided up between the two leagues. But, in 2000, the 8th grade league became a combined traveling team league, controlled by the high school. The 5th/6th/7th graders became the lone Rec League representatives. They also expanded to six teams.

But, this season, answering the call of parents and kids alike, the Rec. Dept. opened up the football experience to 4th graders and combined them with the 5th grade to form a junior league, practicing at Emerson Middle School, and playing at the high school using high school rules. But the field will only be 80 yards in length.

The new league consists of four teams, that will also choose college team names and use Royal Blue, Orange, Red, and Navy Blue as their colors of choice.

The head coach of the Falcons is Jim Tellep. He has coached with the Rec League for 8 of the past 10yrs, all with the Hawkeyes. Six years as assistant, including the last two, and two as head coach in 1998 and 1999. He chose the team name of Falcons because it was the team name of the semi-pro team he played on. In keeping with the college theme, Coach Tellep chose the colors Royal Blue since they are the colors of the United States Air Force Academy Falcons.

Coach Tellep is assisted in this inaugeral season by Coach Larry Scott, who's son Benjamin is a memeber of the team. And also by Coach McMahon, who's son James is also a memeber of the team.

The other three teams joining the Falcons will be The Longhorns, in orange (Texas), led by Coach Vega who has led the Longhorns in the 5th/6th/7th grade league the past 3yrs. The Bulldogs, in red, (Georgia), coached by Coach Molina. And The Flash (Kent State) led by Coach Dockus. Practices are only held Tues, Wed, and Thursdays and will only be one hour as so to accomodate two teams practicing at a time.

The inaguaral season was a rowsing success. Very competitive, and very fun. The Falcons finished the regular season with the best record (5-1). The defeated the Flash in their first playoff game, 43-19. But lost a hearbreaker to the Bulldogs, 13-12 in the championship game to finish as runners up, overall.

The kids worked hard, and played hard. They showed alot of heart and skill, and were very eager to learn, despite their young age. A very positive experience for all. Including the parents and coaches.

The team was led by Nate Nathan, James Sampson and Deshanti Watson. And a very big offensive/defensive line. Watson did the bulk of the scoring for the team, despite breaking his wrist in the opener when he scored 3 touchdowns. Nate at quarterback also did his share of scoring , including passing to Sampson. They were inspirational on both sides of the ball. They played team ball and were unselfish.

The league brought very positive feedback from parents and the kids, alike. Fun was had by all

2005...The Falcons followed up their inaugeral season with another exciting, yet disappointing one. The, again, finished the regular season in first place with a 5-1 record, including 3 shutouts. Their long loss came at the hand of the Longhorns on yardage in overtime, in a game that was otherwise scoreless. In fact, they played 3 straight overtime games at one point, winning 2 of them. But, once again, they were defeated in the playoffs by their arch rival, The Bulldogs, 12-6, failing to capitalize on 1st and goal inside the 10 with less than 2 minutes left and no time outs. They did bounce back to win the consolation game against the Longhorns, 12-0

Despite having the bulk of the '04 team move up, this was a very tough, hard working, no quit bunch led on both sides of the ball by veteran returners James Sampson, Adnan Shafik, Adam Farunia, and most especially Justice Buike, who became the heart and soul of the team offensively. He scored all their touch downs from the running back spot. He scored on short yardage and long runs. Often his yardage was gained running up the middle. They were also aided by newcomers Roberto Sclimenti, Mathew Shestina, Justin Yocabat, and John Liber at quarterback.

The team was once again coached by Jim Tellep. And he was assisted by John Shestina, Matt's dad. They made a very young, inexperienced team, very competitive. They are now 12-4 overall in their first 2 seasons.

The main change this season was having the games be the full 100 yard field, instead of the 80 yards. And the league, this year, was governed by new Recreation Athletic Director, Leslie Favre. Her brother, John, played for Coach Tellep with the Hawkeyes on the 1995 team.
