On 27 January 1967, tragedy struck the Apollo 1 when a flash fire occurred. Three American heroes were killed in this tragedy, Lieutenant Colonel Virgil "Gus" Ivan Grissom, USAF; Lieutenant Colonel Edward Higgins White, II , USAF; Lieutenant Commander Roger Bruce Chaffie, USN.
