Base Set Card Design: (Above)

Front of Card: Extremely lackluster photographs -- Reminiscent of 1996 Pinnacle Cards. If you buy this product you are certainly not getting a decent base set card.

Back of Card: All cards have color on the upper left and right corners which poses a problem for maintaining the quality of the card (See Quality of Card below). The blurb of information on each player is sufficient. I prefer to have a players year-by-year stats listed on every card. Not here. You get 2001 and totals, that’s it.

Grade of Base Set Card Design: 50 (Really a boring card)

Quality of Base Cards

Very disappointing. Virtually EVERY card (even rookies (see below)) has a chip on the top left and right corners, permitting white to show through. The cards are not that thick. The chipping is a major problem

Grade of Quality of Base Cards: 40 (Really Poor Quality for a Allegedly Premium Product)

Rookie Card Design and Quality

There are two Subsets of Rookies: (1) Cards Numbered from 101-200 are sequentially numbered to 1000 and are identical to the Base Set Card Design except for the sequential numbering; (2)Cards Numbered fro 201-232 are sequentially numbered to 650 and contain a piece of “Authentic Event Worn Jersey” (Not Game Used), the cloth in the shape of an X. These cards are much nicer than the other 200 cards, the bad news is you only get one per box and there are only 32 of them. At least I managed to pull Antwaan Randle El. However, they are lackluster and just kind of sit there and shyly stare back at you. Still Boring and they still have the same chipping problem as the base set. Of the rookies that I pulled that weren’t game used: chipping problems. The good news is you get five or six per box, numberd at 1000, not too bad.

Parallels and Inserts (Non-Game Used & Non Autos)

Parallels

Well the same theme continues. One of the Best inserts ever was the X’s and O’s from 99 Momentum (Die cut in the Shape of an X or an O and sequentially numbered to 300 for X’s and much lower for O’s) I loved this set. When I pulled the first X from this box, I didn’t even know I had a parallel. Very Boring, to make matters worse it was Vinny Testaverde. Supposedly there is holofoil or something on the print on the X’s but you can barely tell it is there. The only insignia that this is a parallel is the X approximately ¼ to ½ of an inch in the upper left hand corner and the sequential numbering on the back. Very Very Boring. The Chipping continues.

The Good news is that I did manage to pull a Rookie Gems X’s (The Rookie Parallel of the game used subset of rookies) of Rohan Davey numbered 20/25. Of course I didn’t know it was an X until I checked out the sequential numbering. This is truly one of the most boring Parallel sets I have seen. Still more chipping.

Inserts

Other than the Game Used and Autos (Below) the only inserts I did pull were Rookie Stallions. And I hate to sound like a broken record but Boring and Chipping again. I pulled Ladell Betts and Haynesworth. This insert set (not the players) is a waste of cardboard.

Game Used and Auto Inserts

Well if there is a bright spot to this box that I plunked $140 down on the table for it is the game used and auto inserts. I pulled two (other than the two mentioned above):

Rookie Stallions Autograph: Nothing brightens up a boring card like a nice big autograph on the front. The auto is actually on a mirror sticker that is placed on the card. What made this even nicer is the auto was numbered 039/100 and of course it was a rookie: Kurt Kittner.

Rookie Tandems Authentic Event Used Football (NOT GAME USED). Now I got lucky. I got a Portis/Lelie football and the Portis has STRING HOLES! The back is nice because it says the football was used by Portis/Lelie “05/19/02.” Which I think was pretty cool. The card design is nice.

Grade of Game Used and Auto Inserts: 90 (I think the quality of player I received pulled this grade up a little)

OTHER FACTORS:

INSERT PLAYER SELECTION: 80 (Pretty Good)

ROOKIE PLAYER SELECTION: 85 (ALL OFFENSIVE AND I ACTUALLY HEARD OF THE GUYS)

# OF GAME USED/AUTOS IN A BOX: 80 (4 IN A BOX IS PRETTY GOOD)

PRICE OF BOX: 60 (PRICE IS TOO HIGH FOR THE CHIPPING THAT YOU GET)

VALUE OF CARDS RECEIVED: $325.60 RECEIVED AND $140.00 PAID IS A SOMEWHAT DECENT RATIO. THE BEST IS PROBABLY 3.5 TO 1 WHICH WOULD RECEIVE A 100% GRADE. HERE WE HAVE A 2.32 TO 1 RATIO, STILL PRETTY GOOD. (The idea here is if you get a 2 to 1 ratio and sold all the cards at 50% of book value then you would break even). With this set you would more than likely get back what you put into it. Giving it a 85 grade

Total Grade	73.4

Thus, this set in my book brings a C- into the class room. Which I think is still too high. If you are going to buy one pack. DO NOT buy this product. If you are going to buy a box, then you will MAYBE get your money’s worth. If it worn’t for the chipping, I think this set would be in the 79-85 range. Too much chipping for $140 in my book. This is an overgrade because I got the X of Davey and the Double Game Used of Portis and Lelie and the Randle El Game used really pushed the value of the cards received up. This is definetly not in my top ten for this year.
