Base Set Card Design:

Front of Card: Nice overall design. I will continue on my dislike of cardboard cards with coloring along the borders. The front of the cards are much better than most Upper Deck Products. This is a decent Base set. Card Numbers 61-90 are called triple threat – I really don’t like this subset it is more or less boring and a waste of cardboard.

Back of Card: Mostly White backs, better for future quality of the card. The blurb of information on each player is interesting. You get only up to 5 years of the players stats for his entire career and totals. I’d prefer to see the entire career stats. The backs of the cards are generally run of the mill.

Grade of Base Set Card Design: 85

Quality of Base Cards

No print lines, no bent corners, no chips = NO PROBLEMS. THIN CARD. However, because there is coloring along the edges of the fronts and in places on the back the cards will tend to chip over time. The fronts of the cards have no sheen. Because there are no colors around the borders, even if there are defects you’ll have to search and search hard to find them. Has a Nice Shine to the card. Pretty Clean Set.

Grade of Quality of Base Cards: 85 (Not higher because of the coloring around the edges and the thinness of the card)

Rookie Card Design and Quality

There are 90 Rookies in the Set each numbered to 1,375. Generally you will receive four rookies per box (1:6). With this many rookies you will more than likely get a couple of nobodies. The Rookies are much nicer than the best set cards. Instead of Color, they have silver backgrounds with the word “Freshman” in script across the card. Its odd but the Rookies are sequentially numbered on the front of the card, nice. I got Javon Walker (#’d 0407/1375) and Josh Reed (#’d 0257/1375); Kalimba Edwards (#’d 1351/1375) and Reche Caldwell (#’d 0476/1375). There are 32 listed rookie cards, which implies very very good player selection. However since there are 90 rookies then of the four you get 3 should (theoretically) be unlisted and 1 should be listed. If you buy a box you have a good chance of getting only ONE listed player. It would be nice if the rookies were thicker.

Grade of Quality of Rookie Card Design and Quality: 85 (A Little Bland, Too many no-names)

Parallels and Inserts (Non-Game Used & Non Autos)

Parallels:

There is a Gold Version #’d to 25. As with all parallels if you get a great player then let the music play. If you don’t what are you going to do with this card? Luckily I pulled a Brett Favre #’d 11/25. You will more than likely get one per box and your chances of getting a good player are pretty good as each team only has 1 to 3 cards in the set (the biggest 1 to 3 stars on the team). On the other hand, there are 30 cards of Tripple Threat which because it is a subset the Gold version would not be worth much you are likely to pull a Gold card of the Subset. The gold version is not that impressive, looks like the base card. Boring!

Dean’s List: (1:24) The box says 1:24 but read it carefully, RBs are 1:24; WR are 1:24; QBs are 1:24, etc. Which really makes this a 1:6 insert set. The card resembles the base set and is not really that impressive of an insert.

Sophomore Standouts: (1:24) Again the box says 1:24, not exactly true (see Dean’s List). Really a Boring Insert Set

Student’s of the Game: (1:24) Again the box says 1:24, not exactly true (See Dean’s List). Really basic – it could be a base set design. YAWN.

Grade of Parallels and Inserts (Non-Game Used & Non-Autos) 60 (BORING. You End up with a handful of boring pointless cards)

There are 7 Auto/Game Used Insert sets, you will more than likely get 2 of these.

Autographs

Letterman Autographs (1:480). I didn’t pull one, can’t give an opinion

Game Used

Clutch Performers – (1:72) – I didn’t pull one.

Field Generals (1:240) I pulled the Best One: David Carr with Rohan Davey. Two Swatch one of each on One Card. Looks really nice. A treasure for any collector. This was the nicest pull from the box.

Great Connections (1:240) I didn’t pull one.

Offensive Threats (1:240) I didn’t pull one.

Rookie Honor Roll (1: 72) – I didn’t pull one.

Up & Coming (1:72) I pulled a Ron Dayne. This really sucks, if you read the back it says: “You have received a Ron Dayne PRACTICE-Worn Jersey”. Whoopdi-freaking-do.

Grade of Game Used and Auto Inserts: 70 (Bad Player Selection, Boring Designs, Not Much to choose from here)

OTHER FACTORS:

INSERT PLAYER SELECTION: 65

ROOKIE PLAYER SELECTION: 70 (You will get at least one Rookie that Books)

# OF GAME USED/AUTOS IN A BOX: 60 (2 IN A BOX IS average for the price)

PRICE OF BOX: 60 (I got a bad price at $74.50. I see it on EBAY for $40.00 )

VALUE OF CARDS RECEIVED: $243.00 RECEIVED AND $74.50 PAID IS A GREAT RATIO (3.26:1). THE BEST IS PROBABLY 3.5 TO 1 WHICH WOULD RECEIVE A 100% GRADE. HERE WE HAVE A 3.26 TO 1 RATIO, Tremendous. (The idea here is if you get a 2 to 1 ratio and sold all the cards at 50% of book value then you would break even). However, you have to realize that very very few people will be interested in these base cards. That the Favre #’d of 25 and the Carr/Davey Game Used push this box up. Regardless it has been better than quite a few other boxes that I have purchased. I can not give it a 100% grade due to the unlikelyhood of getting rid of the base cards. However I am giving it a 90% grade.

Total Grade	73.57

Thus, this set in my book brings a C- into the class room. My box was definitely overblown due to the two nice cards I pulled. If you buy it online for less than $40.00 you will be more than happy with your end result. Don’t buy it for more than $50.00 as you won’t realize a return on your cash. If you pay $40.00 then I’d boost the grade up considerably.
