Steve Roland Prefontaine was born on January 24, 1951 in Coos Bay, Oregon. During his short life span of 24 years, he set 14 American records and broke the 4-minute-mile barrier nine times.
Through his rare combination of talent, discipline, determination, and attitude, Pre became the idol of those he called "his people"- the devoted fans who came to watch him run and entered into the perfrormance with their roars of encouragement, "Go Pre!"
In May of 1975, running changed forever when Prefontaine, who had not even reached his athletic peak, died in a tragic car accident.
25 years after his death, Pre continues to inspire runners across the world with his great times, quotes, running ability, and most importantly his desire to win.
