1. New image,transparent, size 500 x 500. We can resize later. 2. Add a new vector layer. Name it wing one. 4. On your color palette ... Set the foreground color to:
#f8bf24, gold. 5. Put your background color on null. 6. Choose your pre set shape tool and select a single line heart shape. 7. Go to view in the toolbar, and then check rulers. 8. Draw out a heart shape one inch by one inch. 9. Rotate the heart 90 degrees to the left. 10. Use the object selector to node edit. Right click on the node to the right and a drop down menu appears. Choose node type symmetric pull down on that node for this shape.
11. Click on the top node and pull it to the left and upwards.
12. Click on the bottom node and pull it to the right and downwards.
13. Use the magic wand to select the heart, then go to selections, and invert.
14. Convert this layer to a raster layer.
15. Flood fill the heart with gold color.
17. On the color palette, change foreground color to brown, #633a15, and the background color to #ffffco, pale yellow.
18. Spray an outline around the wing with the brown, and then one in pale yellow.
20. Starting at the top half of the wing, place your brush in the this brown/pale yellow area and fill the area with an arrow shape like this >. Pulling and pushing in one stroke.
21. On the bottom half of the wing repeat the same stroke only using the right slash shape for your push tool.
(A brief explanation of what we are trying to achieve.) The ideas is to pull color through the wing area to create a detailed veined look.
22. Deselect the wing now.
23. Still using the push tool all other settings the same as before. Go along the outer edge of the wing and lightly touch to push in for a lacy looking edge.
24. use the magic wand and select the wing once more. Invert the selection.
25. Set your air brush tool to
26. On the color palette, change your foreground color to dark brown, #400000.
27. Lightly spray (one click at a time) in this inner area which will be next to the body of the butterfly.
28. Deselect.
29. Copy and paste as new layer.
30. Go to image, mirror.
31. Position the wings.
32. New raster layer. Move this layer beneath the wings.
33. Use the free hand selection tool, and draw a shape like this.
34. Use dark brown color and flood fill. See image below.
35. Merge layers.
36. select with magic wand.
37. Use your air brush once more and add the dark brown color where the wings and body meet so that it blends. Apply one click at a time.
38. New layer.
39. change color palette to a metallic silver. use your paint brush, size 1,opacity 100%.
40. Paint on the antenna. Refer to image below.
41. Change foreground color to white now use your paintbrush size 2, and opacity 100%. and paint little dots along the antenna.
42. Merge visible layers.
43. Copy and paste as new layer.
44. Use the deformation tool, and make this second butterfly much smaller. Then position both of them to your liking.
45. On your large butterfly, add some smaller white spots, and a couple of larger black ones.
You are finished with your butterfly! I'll leave it to you to add a background that compliments your butterflies.
There are other color combinations that look great. Try this in blue, or pink!
