Justis H. Rathbone founded the Knights of Pythias on February 19, 1864 in the city of Washington D. C. President Lincoln, when made aware of the principles and goals of the new Order, heartily approved and encouraged the members to go ahead with their plans. Later, the Pythian Order became the first fraternal organization to be chartered by an Act of the United States Congress.
The distinguishing principles of Fraternal Order Knights of Pythias are " Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence". It bases its ritualistic work largely on the story of the friendship of Damon and Pythias, who were historical characters circa 500 B.C. Both were members of a school founded by Pythagoras, who is known as the Father of Philosophy.
To become a member of the Pythagorean Brotherhood, certain rigorous tests were demanded. Some were very similar to the ritual of installation of our Order today.
Owatonna Lodge # 62 was chartered by the Grand Lodge of Ohio in 1874. We currently have 60 members and meet every Monday Night at 8:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 3630 Fairmont Blvd., Shaker Hts, Ohio, 44118.
Men who wish to give back to the community and would like to join others who feel the same way are prime candidates for membership in our Order. The Knights of Pythias does not seek to shape any man's belifs, but Pythianism is the practical application of spiritual and charitable principles in everyday life.
