North American T-28A
US Airforce, 51-2763

North American's T-28A trainer was the in US Air Force's most advanced training airplane of the 1950's, used to train pilots for ultra high-speed jet aircraft. Using a Wright R-1300 engine with a takeoff rating of 800 horsepower, the T-28A had a top speed of 288 miles per hour and a service ceiling of 29,800 feet. The first United States trainer to have a tricycle landing gear, the T-28A was a particularly safe biplane for beginner pilots. The nose wheel was steerable and it carried a movable taxi light. Outstanding characteristics of the T-28A wire its large size (it had a wingspan of 40 feet and weighed 6365 pounds ,) its large bubble canopy, tricycle landing gear and a "Butter paddle" propeller The U.S. Navy also used the T28 trainer, but its version was modified to use a larger engine and a three-bladed prop. This Monogram model is a finely detailed and faithful reproduction Of the full- size Tl28A. Examine the engine and propeller and notice the cockpit interior with Instruments and controls.

The Monogram U.S A.F T-28 A model incorporates operational and retractable landing gear and sliding canopy. To retract the nose wheel, pivot the strut back into the fuselage and close the door by pressing the door at the front edge near the tab. Insert a fingernail under the tab to open the door. Pull the nose wheel strut down until it snaps into position. Retract the main landing struts by pivoting them inward. Notice as a strut approaches the up position, that the edge of the wheel engages a pin on the small door and pulls it closed. Landing struts stay in up position because of tension on the strut create by being and sandwiched between the top and bottom wing panel. To open the struts, insert a fingernail under the small tabs and pull the gear downward. The canopy can best be operated by holding it between your thumb and forefinger and sliding. When the adjustable support is in the ''down" position it enables the model to stand in its normal manner on three wheels.
