Part

Nick held Alex, trying to comfort her. He was
unsuccessful. He finally had Jeeves call for a cab. When the cab arrived, Nick
carried Alex out of the governor's mansion.
The ride back to the hotel was a sullen one. When
the cab driver pulled up in front of the hotel, the doorman, Julio, rushed to
open the cab door. Alex climbed out of the taxi and waited while Nick gave the
driver a generous tip.
"Mr. Lachey. Miss Devereaux," Julio
greeted them.
"Julio," Nick said with a grim smile.
Alex had stopped crying and the elevator ride was
silent. Nick opened the door to their room and Alex passed him silently.
"Alex, I'm going to get something to
eat," he said, hoping she'd want to join him. She only nodded. "You
want something?" Alex shook her head, going to curl up in a ball on the
bed. "You going to be okay?" he asked, opening the door. The response
he received was nothing more than a shrug.
"I'll be back in awhile, `Kay Alex?" Nick
asked. He got a nod. Finally he left, not knowing what to do.
Downstairs. . .
"Nick!" Jeff called from across the bar.
Nick walked over to the guys.
"Where's Alex?" Justin asked.
"Really, where's your girl?" Drew asked.
"Upstairs. Her father kind of blew up at her.
More than kind of, actually."
"She okay?" Justin wondered. Nick
shrugged. "What does this," He shrugged, "Mean?"
"I don't know if she's okay. She just won't
talk. She's so sad and I don't know what to do." There was silence.
"Well, I'm waiting for the answer."
"We can't help you, bro. You have to figure
out what to do. She's your girl."
"But-"
"No, you have to. It's hard, but you
gotta."
