Chapter Nine

Why? the question echoed in her head, asking a thousand times and receiving no answers. Why me?

Pain soared through her body, her head throbbed dully as her lower abdomen screamed in agony. She felt violated. The suffering which she indured seemed only a part of the terrific emptiness; the hopelessness which was intrinsic to her life. The moment he entered her the loose thread which connected soul to body was severed, her will to live drifted on a sea of misery from which there was no recovery.

An attempt to recount the moment at which her life had started to tumble only caused memories of upset and hurt, she could recall no happy times- only sadness. Events which had seemed happy were only those which were less harmful than others, those which seemed worse felt nothing compared with the loss she felt at that moment; she was unable to cry, to create the one fountain of relief which might save her from her downfall- the tears wouldn't come.

Taylor watched her sullen figure in dismay. The long dried up tears had stained red tracks down her perceptibly bruised face, her eyes were dull and lifeless as they metaphorically hammered at the wall. The small amount of clothing which she wore was disheveled and slightly torn; a small trickle of blood stained the sky blue skirt.

Looking at the stain caused a feeling a nausea to climb up his throat, evidence of what he had done to her. Tears gathered again in his eyes, unnoticed as his mind screamed at him, reprimanded him for not coming to her aid.

He returned once again to her eyes, the look scared him; they seemed so empty and shallow, like every dream, every hope which she still retained had disappeared so quickly and easily. The sadness within him grew. He wanted to hold her, comfort her, tell her everything would be alright, promise her that he would protect her, forever...

Give a little to get a little Taylor, give a little...

Slowly, hesitantly he reached out to her.

"Kalli?" he gently placed his free hand on her shoulder. There was a slight pause.

"GET OFF ME..." her scream bore through him as she suddenly came alive with anger. Her body moved so quickly he was shocked when she was jumping at him. Hands slammed visciously against his chest with a supernatural strength. She continued to strike, screaming at him, warning to never touch her, screaming so many things...

"You let him hurt me you Bastard!" her voice was haggard as her dry throat quietened her shrieks "You let him..." he lifted his right arm as much as it would go and yanked visciously, she stopped, staring at the restraint which had caused a small trail of blood to travel down his arm.

"I can't move Kalli, I can't do anything..." a loud sob cut into his speech "I tried, I tried so hard Kalli, I wanted to help you, I wanted to... I can't move." his words were reduced to a whisper as her stared at her apologetic expression, her lonely eyes were sorry. She fell back onto the hard stone floor.

"I'm sorry Taylor, I'm so sorry..." his body took over, he moved swiftly forward and took her in his arms, gently cradling her. He held her so softly, as if she were a fragile china doll; his arms surrounded her easily in a protecting embrace as he whispered sweet words into her ear, told her what she wanted, needed to hear.

"Why did this happen to me?" her sad voice broke through his words.

"I don't know."

"Why wasn't he here Taylor? Why didn't Johnny protect me... he promised me." Taylors heart screamed, Johnny... he hated the name, the man who could reduce her to the being she was.

"Kalli," he whispered, his tone was sincere and his eyes held honesty which was impossible to reprimand. "I'll protect you forever." she looked at him slowly, needing to believe what he had said, needing his protection more than anything else.

"Do you promise?"

"I promise."
