Chapter Fifteen

"Hey Sadie. Is Brandon there?"
"Yeah, why? He's getting ready for later. What's up?"
"I have to tell him that due to moral issues, I have to cancel on him tonight."
"Moral issues? Since when do you get to turn down the occasional date?"
"I know you're his cousin, and you're looking out for him, but Kristi likes him so much and I would feel too guilty if Kristi found out that I went out with him instead of her going out with him. Like stealing her man, you know? I'm not going to risk Kristi over a long distance relationship. I'm sorry Sadie. I feel bad enough already. I shouldn't have even accepted in the first place. And then when you guys left, all Kristi could talk about was Brandon, and the way she was watching him leave, I just felt too bad. Am I mean?" Sadie was quiet for a moment. "Sadie? You there?"
"Yeah, I'm here Whit. And as much as I wanted to see you and Brandon together instead of him and Kristi, I see where you're coming from and I understand. You're a good friend, Whit. And I definitely don't envy you on talking to Brandon. He's so excited for tonight."
"Well, maybe I can just come over to your house and hang out for a while, that way, when Kristi hears about it, it won't sound so intimate, and that we were leaving her out of something with Brandon, and I don't completely crush his feelings."
"That's a great idea. Come over as soon as you can and stay for dinner and a movie." Whitney smiled.
"I'll be over in five minutes, and let Brandon know plans have changed. If you don't want to say any more than that, I can do it."
"Okay. See you in a few. And try not to look so fabulous." Whitney laughed.
"Got it. Bye." Whitney hung up the phone and went to put her hair up in a half pony tail. She wasn't even going to bother to change. She ran downstairs, grabbing her purse as she flew past her dad. "Dad, I'm going over to Sadie's for a little while. For dinner and a movie. I shouldn't be longer than ten. Love you."
"Have a good time sweetie. Love you too." She ran out the door, and hung a left, and ran three houses down. Stopping on the door step, she took a few seconds to compose herelf. A few deep breaths, a breathmint, and the doorbell. Just as she was reaching for it, the door opened.
"Brandon! Hi!" She gave him her best smile.
"Hey Whitney. I heard our plans changed." He looked disappointed.
"Yeah, about that. Can I come in?"
"Oh. Sorry. Sure." He led her into the den and to the couch. She turned to sit facing him.
"About tonight. I like you, I think you're really cute, and I would definitely like to get to know you. The thing is, is that so would Kristi." His eyes dropped to his hands. "She kind of- claimed you. When she first saw you. She really likes you. I probably shouldn't tell you this, but when you left the park with Sadie, Kristi was so sad. I could see it in her eyes. And then when she couldn't see you any more, she talked about you. All of that put together, I would feel too bad if she found out that you and I were dating instead of her and you. I know you don't like her that way, otherwise you would have asked her first, but I'd feel too guilty of stealing her man. I know you're not, but I can't go behind her like that." She studied Brandon's face, trying to read it. After a couple minutes, he finally looked at her.
"I respect you more for telling me, and not going behind a friends back. I wouldn't be able to do that to my friend either. The rest is unfortunate, because I really liked you, and hoped it could go farther, but it's cool."
"That's why I wanted to just come over and for us to hang out for a while. I'm hoping that would satisfy all ends. Ours so we can hang out with eachother, but then Kristi doesn't find that I'm stealing her "boyfriend"."
"It's cool. I'm glad that you came, and that you're cool to hang out with me." He smiled. "So how long are you staying?"
"I told my dad I'd be home by ten. And we'll for sure have eachother's numbers by then." Brandon smiled.
"Of course. So. What would you like to watch?"
