Livvy sat in her office at her dest, phone to her ear. She'd been on the phone for- she glanced at her desk clock- almost forty five minutes, planning an extravagant sweet sixteen perty for Mrs. Braxton's daughter. So far her cell had been quiet. It was hard to stay focused when her favorite band was getting ready to throw a charity concert on the back half of her property. She was dying to know what they were saying. She knew she couldn't go back, that'd seem to desperate or clingy. She'd have to wait like all the other fans- the ones that had been sitting outside her back gate since six am. But she had work to do. She vowed to finish this call, tie up the loose ends, then get ready. By then, it would be time to meet up with Jackie and Margo and go promote the Walk.
Two hours later, she was in a flowy baby blue strapless sundress and blue peep toe sandals. Curly hair in a low side ponytail and bangs swept to the same side. Hoop earrings replaced with carat diamond studs, and a silver chain necklace with a diamond teardrop on a single chain to match. She went outside to her waiting black Jaguar coupe convertable, with the top up. She saw her friends stop at the gate, put in the passcode, then drive up the gently sloping, curving hill to her door. They parked, jumped out, then jumped in her car.
"Livvy, you're gorgeous!" Margo exclaimed.
"Thanks. You guys look great too. Let's go." Livvy smiled at Margo in the passenger, and Jackie in the middle back.
"So what's it like having them in your house?" Jackie asked, leaning in close to the front.
"It's kind of weird. They're not comfortable yet, so they're not all goofy and stuff. We've just talked over dinner yesterday, mostly about today. I showed them to the stage this morning, and came back to work and get ready while they got the stage ready. That's pretty much been about it so far." She didn't want to go into both details or envy if she told them about Taylor and the pool this morning, so she didn't.
"So no late-night run-ins?" Margo asked.
"Nope. They crashed pretty early, actually." She didn't want to tell them about their evening walk either.
"I bet they were exhausted." Margo said.
"So once more, the plan?" Jackie asked as they approached the trees.
"Okay. We're going to go to the shed and get the carts with the waters we made and pass them out. I'm sure while we do that, the guys will brobably take the oppertunity to freshen up if they didn't take all of their stuff in the house. They'll come out and do the walk. During that time, we'll be getting the registration table ready outside the gates. We'll register when they get back, then come in and get the merch table ready. I'll get up and make a little speech before the opening act. You guys can be waiting in the front row if you want. After, if they decide to come out at do autographs or not is up to them, and I've told them so. Then what they want to do is up to them."
"Okay."
"Good?"
"Yeah."
"Good." Livvy slowed, and coded the gate open. She could hear them sound checking. They'd been busy with her crews. She could imagine the crowd out by the gate were freaking out about the soundcheck. She was slightly surprised there wasn't screaming or singing drifting through the air. Driving past the stage and stopping by the storage shed by the outside gate, she parked and shut off her car. She wa glad she had black tinted windows- she smiled. Tinted Windows. She saw the guys watch them slide by. She got out slowly, smiled and waived. Taylor stopped playing, then picked it up again. The girls got out and walked to the shed. Once opened, they each wheeled a chrome cart full of bottled waters towards the smaller gate. Waiting for it to open, Livvy watched them from behind her dark glasses. The guys were watching the girls. She shifted her weight as the door slid open silently, then pushed het cart out. The crowd went silent when she stepped through. She went down the line a little, waited for Margo and Jackie to come through, then closed the gate.
"Hey Hanson fans!" She called. "You ready to walk?"
"YES!!" The crowd shouted.
"We've got waters for you guys that we'll be passing out." Livvy started passing out the waters, and a lollipop with a walk tag tied to it to each person. She went down the line, with Margo and Jackie behind her. When her cart of 100 bottles was empty, she traded carts with Jackie, then with Margo. When she was done, they had gone through almost three hundred bottles of water. They wheeled the carts back through the gate and into storage. By then the music had stopped, and the stage had only the crew and back up bassist and guitarist talking. Livvy assumed they were on the bus. She turned to Margo and Jackie after locking the shed. "So I'm going to make sure the garbage cans are well placed, and the appropriate crews are in the right place. You guys can start on getting the merch table ready." They got the merch out of the shed, and had Jackie and Margo start with opening the boxes on the preset tables while she did her errands. She checked the garbage cans, went to the concession stand with sodas, juices and waters, then talked to the security and ticket takers. Meeting her group back at the table, she helped by setting out the shirts, books, c.d.'s and posters. The Walk was scheduled to start in half an hour.
"Tay. Did you see the sweet car she rolled up in?" Isaac asked, as they shared a mirror on their bus.
"Yeah, that's next year's model too."
"Your girl looked even better!" Zac shouted from the shower.
Taylor grinned. "She did look good, didn't she. And that was even from a distance." He turned and looked out the window at the girls.
"I dare you to put a move on her before the Walk!" Zac called out.
"I plan on it!" He called back.
Once he was ready, tight jeans, and a white button down t-shirt over a beater, he ran his hands through his hair a couple times, then began his mission. Giving a wave to his brothers, he exited the bus taking a deep breath, and began his walk across the grass, then pavement. The girls didn't even notice him. He kept his eyes on Livvy. Her back was towards him, so he appreciated the way her hips swayed and curls bounced as she walked away from him towards the storage shed. She returned two seconds later with a large box in her arms.
She pretended not to see him and kept her stubborn focus on her friends, and trying not to drop the box full of guitar pics. She set the box on the ground behind the tables, trying to keep her body angled away from Taylor. He approached the table. Jackie and Margo froze mid sentence. Livvy turned to him, slight upset that he'd inturrupted the girl's progress with the table. She huffed slightly at him.
"Olivia, can I talk to you for a second?" She looked at her friends.
"I'll be right back," she sighed. She went around the table, and followed Taylor who started to wander towards the empty stage. "Taylor, the Walk starts in ten minutes," she warned him.
"I know. And I know you know we're always late." He turned to her and smiled. "Besides. Ike and Zac are still getting ready." He turned up the charm in his smile. "I just wanted to first thank you for putting this all together so smoothly. You must be great at what you do. And thank you for opening your home to us."
"Thank you, and you are welcome." She smiled, and watched his eyes.
"And second, I wanted to ask you, if after the show, if we could try out your club with the bar and have some drinks and dance some. You and me."
Wow. What was happening? She asked herself. What should she do or say? So as a staller, she studied him. "Sure. I have no problem opening that room for guests." She tilted her head slightly and smiled.
She wanted to play like that? Fine. "Okay, great." He looked over his left shoulder and saw his brothers coming. It was time. "Are you going to walk with us?"
She looked over her left shoulder at her friends. "We're close to being done," she turned back to look at Taylor. "I told them if we were close to being done they could walk and I'd finish, but then I was planning on manning the registration tables while you were walking..." Taylor stopped listening. He didn't want to wait until celar after the show. He wanted to give her something to think about until then. He made up his mind on his next move then tuned back in.
"But you can register after the walk, and finish the tables then too. There's a few hours between the walk and gates." Here he went. He brought up a hand and cupped her smooth pink cheek. He watched the surprise jump into her eyes. "Please walk. I'd feel better knowing you were in the crowd." He hesitated, then dropped his hand as his brothers joined them.
"Hey Tay," Zac said. "Olivia."
"Ready?" Isaac asked.
"Yeah. I'll meet you guys by the gate. Two seconds." They nodded and kept going. Not towards the the merch table, Livvy saw as she watched over her shoulder. They did wave to the girls though. "So? Will you?" His voice soft, a hint of begging layered under.
She sighed again, and turned back to Taylor and studied his gorgeous face. "You're missing your scarf." He reached for his bare neck, then smiled.
"Later. Thanks. So?" He grinned. She shook her head and smiled, looked over her shoulder again, and saw his brothers watching them.
"I'm holding up the show, huh?"
"Kinda."
She rolled her eyes. "Alright. Even if I've got a million things to do, but you asked so nice. Let's get the show on the road. Literally." She smiled, turned and started to walk towards the girls. Taylor cought up to her as she waved the girls over. When they got to the guys, they all went to the small gate. Livvy unlocked it, and let the guys through. A scream swelled then silenced as Zac handed Taylor the famous megaphone. Taylor looked at her through the gate, so she held up a finger as if to say wait. He nodded, then began his routine as the gate closed. When it was quiet again, she reopened it and let the girls out. Closing the gate behind them, they walked quickly to catch up to the group.
"I thought we wern't going to walk? What about the table?" Margo asked.
"Taylor asked nicely for us to walk with them."
"Really?!" Jackie gasped.
Livvy nodded. "We'll just have to weave our way to the tables before they're done talking to register after they're done."
After his beginning speach, when he was walking and fans started trying to converse with him, he only paid half attention. His mind was wishing he had eyes on the back of his head to look for Olivia. What if she had tricked him and stayed behind? He couldn't stand it. When the girl to his left paused after her sentence, he turned and raised his megaphone, walking backwards, and encouraged the walkers, but searching for the girl in the baby blue dress. When he finally saw her at the very back, he turned back around, content. He actually started to pay attention to the comments around him. While the guys made the last stretch of the walk, the girls cut across and took their place behind the registration tables. Livvy was at the right end of the two end to end tables, Jackie in the middle, and Margo at the left end. They all had the hand stamps, pens and registration cards in front of them, ready for the rush. The girls watched as Taylor led the crowd towards them, with a big smile on his face.
"So make your way up to these very helpful girls up at the table and make your mile count by registering!" Taylor went behind Livvy and climbed up onto the table next to her on her left, between her and Jackie, then Zac joined them, standing on Livvy's right, and Isaac stood next to Zac. Jackie leaned back slightly, grabbed Livvy's attention and gave her an ecstatic grin, then looked up at Taylor. When Taylor was done with his speech, they disappeared back inside the gate and left the girls to the crowd.
"We're going to have to hurry. That was a big group and ate a lot of our time. I knew we shouldn't have walked." Livvy told the girls before they passed through the gate.
"It's okay, I'm not affraid of working quickly." Jackie said reassuringly as they practically ran behind the tables. Livvy groaned when she saw Taylor leaning against the fence next to the gate, push away and come over. She should have known. She looked to the stage and saw only two. Figures.
"So Olivia. Thanks for coming out." She organized a stack of t-shirts without looking at him.
"You're welcome. A lot of people came. It was a good turnout."
"It was."
"So what's next for you guys till the doors open?" She moved on to another stack of t-shirts, and Taylor moved with her.
"Nothing for a while, then our vocal warm ups, that's about it. I'm glad you're going to introduce us." He gave her a smile she didn't see, but she could hear it in his voice. She still didn't look up at him. "Olivia. Walk me to my bus?" Ohhh. Testing his autority. Good. Livvy smiled to herself. She put the shirt down then rounded the table. Taylor was quiet for a minute. He couldn't figure her out. She was practically on top of him this morning, and now she was frigid. He wished the show was over so he could get her alone for more than five minutes. "So. Any requests?"
"Wow. That's a tough one. Let me think while we walk."
"Sure." They walked down the pavement towardsw the bus.
"Oh, just so you know, I have catering coming over in about twenty minutes so you can eat before the show."
"Oh. Cool. Thanks." Livvy took a step closer to him, arms brushing. He looked down. They stopped by the doors to his bus, facing eachother. "So tonight's still good?"
"Yeah. You want a d.j. and a bartender?"
"Neither. We've got ipods and mixers, we're good." He didn't need another audience.
"Okay." He looked at her, searching her eyes hopefully, uncertain. She reached and took his hand in hers, turned it over and traced the creases, then linked fingers, and looked into his eyes. "We've both got work to do."
His insides shook. He desperately wished her sunglasses would somehow jump off of her face. "Did you think of a song?"
"I've always liked 'Dancing In The Wind'."
He grinned. "Awesome. Will do." She laughed. "And you'll be on the side, right?"
"Right."
"On my side?"
"I suppose it can be arranged."
"Great."
"Good luck tonight. Though you'll be great as usual." She smiled up at him. He wanted to lean in and steal a kiss so bad it ached.
She knew what was coming next, with the awkward silence and all. She could see it on his face, warring in his eyes. She needed to escape. Now. Or when he did, she'd jump him right there. And that wasn't her plan. After another second, she said, "Well, I'll see you at the show, then." She turned and didn't look back. She walked quickly back to the merch table, breathing like she'd just run a mile.
"Livvy, what's wrong?" Margo asked. She'd never seen Livvy flushed and breathing like she was. She was the most cool, collected person she knew.
"Taylor-" she tried to catch her breath while her friends stared, gaping mouths. "wanted to kiss me." She finished. Her friends gasped.
"So what did you do?" Jackie asked.
"Did you kiss him?!" Margo shrieked.
"Ha. He wishes. I got my ass outa there."
"Are you crazy!?" They both screeched.
"I think he is. But that's a good thing. This is perfect for my plan. Lets finish this thing, okay?"
