Chapter Ten
The next morning, my alarm went off. I got dressed in a short pleated mini skirt and a white baggy cotton sweater. I french braided my hair, pulled on some sandals and met Brittney for school. The first two hours dragged by. Thrid hour came, and when I entered the classroom, I was greeted by Lance and a little whit box.
"Hi Lance. What's that?"
"Hey April. It's for you."
"Really?! We just started talking yesterday- and already you're gettig presents."
"Open it." I looked at him, then at the box. I carefully opened it.
"Oh Lance, it's so beautiful!" I looked at the gold heart locket. "You didn't have to do this. We haven't even been talking to eachother for a whole day."
"But I feel like I've known you since sixth grade."
"Lance, that's so sweet." I stepped closer to him and gave him a hug. Shouts and whistles came from the class. I smiled at him. Lance too the locket from me and clasped it behind my neck. "Thanks Lance."
"You're welcome." The bell rang and we went to our sets. Biology sucks. I thought about this afternoon and began to get excited.
"April, why are you smiling? Is there something funny you'd like to share with the class?" Everyone turned to look at me.
"Ah, no, Mr. Porter. I was just thinking about my plans for this afternoon."
"What's so exciting?"
"I have a-" I stopped suddenly, realizing what I was about to say. "I have a- family reunion after school." Everybody laughed, but Mr.Porter didn't seem amused. But that's okay- I didn't mean for it to be funny.
"Anyway..." The teacher went back to the class. At the end of the class, the bell rang and I met Lance at the door.
"Ready to go to lunch? Where's Brittney?"
"She should be coming." I saw her and we went to meet up with Lance's friends. We all piled into someone's car and voted on a restaurant. We ended up at the Coffee House Cafe.
"There's a new band playing there on Saturday night that I can't wait to see. Heard of the Crazy Girls?" Brittney and I refused to exchange glances. We agreed that the driver talked too much.
"Yeah. They changed their name though." Brittney informed him casually.
"To what? How do you know about that?"
"Hojja. A friend of mine's in the band." Brittney smiled to nobody in particular.
"How'd they come up with that?"
"I dunno."
Soon it was time to leave. We went back to school. Lance and I talked through fourth and fifth hour. Sixth lasted forever. Brittney and I took my bus home. She ran home and changed.
