Chapter Seven
Mallory was the one to tell me.
"You can be in the ban if you want. the flute and keyboards specifically, but you could sub for any one of us, right?"
"Yeah."
"As for singing, you can do back-up all the time, and an occasional lead. And since your dad has the contract, you've probably heard better group names than the Crazy Girls, so, we're open for suggestions."
"Oh. Wow. Well, thanks guys. Ah, lets do the demo tape first and I'll take it home to my dad for him to listen to. Is that okay?" I asked all of them.
"Yes! Yes!" The jumped up and screamed.
"Lets get going then." They calmed down quickly and went to their instruments. We went through it one time. "Everybody ready to record?"
"Yeah." Mallory found a tape recorder, set it up, then pressed record. She ran to her keyboard.
"One, two, three, four!" We played it again. When the song was done, Mallory stopped the tape, rewound it, then gave it to me. "Here. Give this to your dad. Call us as soo as he listens to it and gives you his opinion. When does he get home?" I looked at my watch.
"He should be home now."
"Fine. We'll all stay here. Call as soon as you hear anything. In the meantime, we'll work on new songs."
"Okay. Talk to you later."
"Bye." They called. I left Brittney's and ran home with the tape.
"Dad! Dad!" I called coming through the front door.
"What? What?"
"Listen to this." I handed him the tape we had just made. He found a player and put the tape in, then hit play. All through the song, I watched his face for some reaction, but I got nothing. He didn't even smile or frown. When the song ended, he smiled at me.
"That was some fine flute playing there. Who was that?"
"Me, dad. So, what do you think?"
"I didn't know you were in a band."
"Neither did I until Brittney invited me over to a practice." I looked at him expectantly.
"Well, it's a cool song. Why don't you get some friends together, and let them listen to it. If they like it without knowing who it is, well, you'll just have to wait and find out."
"Great. I'll do that now. Have a party." I ran upstairs and called everybody's number that I had in my book and told them to meet at my house for a ten minute party at five thirty. I even called Brittney's house, but didn't tell them why.
