Chapter Two

"Lisa, they'll be here in five minutes."
"I know that John, but I have to get ready. Do not tell them about Mariah. And tell them not to go in that room. It's a complete pig sty and I don't want them to see it."
"Alright."
"Your family had to come over now didn't they."
"It's just my cousin Walker and his family."
"How many did you say were coming?" She carefully applied her make-up in the bathroom mirror.
"Nine."
"Oh my goodness. That's a lot of people."
"Yes. They actually are on vacation for a week and this is the only chance they'll have for a while to see us. Here they are." The white van pulled up in the driveway. John went out to greet them. "Hey guys! How's it going?"
"Great." Walker answered. Diana gave him a hug.
"Cousin John!" Zac came barreling out of the van and leaped for his cousin.
"Wow Zac! You're getting tall! And heavy!" Taylor and Isaac crawled out of the van.
"Hey Tay! Hi Ike!"
"Hey John." They greeted. Diana came back holding Zoe. Avie, Jess and Mackie trailed behind.
"Hi Zoe! Hi Avie! Hi Jess! Hi Mackie!"
"Hi John." The three oldest replied.
"Lisa!!" She came rushing out of the house. "Everybody, meet my wife Lisa. Lisa, meet my cousin Walker and his wife Diana, and their family- Ike, Tay, Zac, Jess, Avie, Mackie and Zoe."
"Hello everyone." She smiled warmly.
"Hi Lisa." They chorused.
"Well, come on inside. I will warn you to be careful if you go in the basement. It's really messy. One room in particular. Try not to go in there. Huge mess!" She lied to them. They nodded and followed Lisa in the house and made themselves comfortable. "Does anybody want anything to drink?" Lisa offered.

********************

I heard a stampede of feet upstairs, waking me up from one of the most peaceful naps I've had in a long time. 'I wonder what's going on up there.' I thought to myself. 'I wonder what my mom is saying to them. About me in the basement.' I struggeled to listen upstairs.

********************

"I have to go to the bathroom." Zac wispered to his mom. "I'll be right back." She nodded and Zac slid off the couch. he rounded a corner, opened a door then closed it, without going in. He slowly crept towards the basement door. 'I wanna see the huge mess. I like huge messes.' He said to himself, a small smile playing on his lips. 'Maybe I can find some of John's old toys to play with.' He quietly took the stairs down to the basement.

********************

I heard somebody come down the stairs. 'Probably John- just to walk by again, unknowing.' So I didn't bother. I closed my eyes and leaned my head against the cold cement wall.

********************

'Is this the room she said to not go into or is it the next one? Open the door and find out.' He turned the doorknob.

********************

I watched the knob turn. 'Must be my mother. Off schedule- something must be happening.' I made a serious attempt to push myself into a sitting position. The door opened and a small figure stood on the threshold. I heard him gasp. I knew it wasn't my mother or John.
"Please- don't leave." I wispered. "Help me." The figure just stood there. I couldn't make out the face. "Help me please." I had found my voice. "Please." I begged. The door shut quickly and they were gone. I fell over and began crying.
