Chapter Five

"Does John know about this?" Zac returned.
"All safe."
"Great."
"No. I don't know what she tells him- or doesn't tell him- to keep him from finding me."
"Zac- go get as much food as you can carry."
"Why?!"
"She hasn't eaten anything other than a carrot in over three days. Think about it."
"Ooohhh." He left again. Tay looked me over once more. He suddenly climbed over the seat in front of us and dug around in the glove compartment. He came back with a brush and rubber band in hand.
"Shall we start fixing you up?" He smiled. I returned the smile and nodded. I lifted a weak arm to reach for the brush, but Tay pulled it out of my grasp. "I'll do it. You sit and enjoy the sun."
"Thanks Tay."
"No problem." He spun me around so my back was towards him. "If I pull too hard, let me know." I nodded and Tay began brushing my tangled mess. Zac returned with a ton of food. Fruits, junk food, a box of cereal and an extra can of pop. He sat down in front of me. He gave Tay a weird look, but then it turned into a smile.
"So Mariah, what do you want first?" Zac asked me.
"Ummm, cereal I guess." He opened the box and handed me the bag of Honey Nut Cheerios. I began eating. I closed my eyes, letting the heat of the sun warm my pale face, and enjoying the tingling feeling Tay was giving me, brushing my hair. The van door slid open again.
