Chapter Six

We went inside and was met by the entire Roosevelt football team. At first there was an awkward silence, then a quite whispering filled the room. Trey put his arm around me and we went to order. After we had recieved our order of chocolate mint ice cream for Trey and chocolat for me, we located a table as far away from the team as possible.
"Are those the guys you were talking to and trying to get you to go on a date with them?"
"Yeah." I told him the things that happened. "The one that came on to me the strongest was the one that all the girls on the line are drooling over." I said quietly. "Hold on. If I go up front, the dork will probably come talk to me. I can feel him stairing at me." I shuddered. "Then you can see which one I'm talking about. I'll go get something to drink. Be right back. Oh- pretend to look busy." I got up and back to the register person. When I got there, I looked back at Trey. His head was down, examining something. A few seconds later, while I was waiting to order, somebody came and stood next to me.
"Hi. I'm Nathan." I turned towards him.
"Hi Nathan, I'm Madeline. Wait. I think I remember you from somewhere." His eyes grew wide.
"No, you don't. We've never met before."
"I remember now. This afternoon you played against my school in a football game. And while I was waiting for my boyfriend, you were trying-"
"No way." He shook his head.
"And now you lie about it! I'm not dumb. I'd recognize your face anywhere. If you'd go so far as to try and steal me from my boyfriend, I know nine girls that would love to go out with you. And guess what?! They're all single!! What a coincidence!" "Yeah. They were the ones who took my place after I left."
"Oh. Okay. Um, well, there was this one, I think her name was Sam or something-"
"Sam!"
"Yeah. She's kinda cute."
"Oh my god! Sam!"
"What?"
"Well, Sam and I are best friends. We've known eachother for six years. We're as close as sisters."
"So, can I have her phone number?"
"I suppose. Get a pen and paper, then come over to my table."
"Thanks."
"Sure." The teenage boy behind the counter filled the cup.
"That'll be a dollar fifty." I gave him the money, smiled at him, then got two straws and headed back to Trey.
"He'll be over in a minute. I distracted him so much that he changed his mind about me, and now he wants Sam's number!"
"Sam? Wow." Nathan came over, pulled a chair around and sat down.
"Nathan, meet my boyfriend Trey. Trey, meet the boy all the girls on the line want, Nathan."
"Hello Nathan." Trey greeted him. I could detect a hint of ice in his tone, but Nathan didn't notice.
"Hi Trey." Nathan said.
"Well, do you have something to write with? A piece of paper?"
"Yeah." He dug in his pocket and pulled everything he needed out. I wrote Sam's number down, and gave the paper and pen back to Nathan.
"Thanks Madeline. I really 'preciat this."
"Sure. i can give you the rest of the girls' phone numbers if you ever need them." He got up to leave. "Oh Nathan. Just to let you know, she cries easilly."
"Thanks. Bye Madeline, nice meeting you Trey."
"You too Nathan." He left and joined his teammates.
"Ready to go Maddy?" Trey asked.
"Yeah." We got up and headed towards the exit. On our way out, I called, "Bye Nathan. See ya 'round." All the boy's eyes went wide and turned to look at Nathan.
"Bye Madeline, Trey." We climbed back into his car.
