There is no running away from Death.

Major Famines of the 20th Century:

India: 1899-1901 - One million Perish in famine.
China: 1911 - Millions perish from starvation.
Russia: 1911 - Devastating famine kills millions.
Armenia: 1916 - Tens of thousands starve to death.
China: 1928 - About 3 million perish of starvation over a three-year period.
USSR: 1932-1934 Famine devastates new social order; 5 million starve to death.
China: 1936 - Famine caused by drought; 5 million starve to death in the western part of the country.
India: 1943 - Millions die in famine during World War II.
China: 1943 - In Kwang Tung Province, one million starve to death. The sale of children becomes common.
USSR: 1947 - Tens of thousands of pheasants starve to death in the wake of grain exports (not reported until 1963).
Nigeria: 1968 - Death toll estimates of severe famine range from 800,000 to millions, during a three-month period.
Africa and India: 1973-1974 - Mass starvation; 200,000 perish.
Central Africa: 1980-Present - The first live television coverage of a major famine; millions of TV viewers witness the deaths of thousands in prime time.

Burning Alive

Combustible materials have a long history of turning people into ashes.

A general rule of thumb for fatalities from burns: the percent of mortality is about the same as the percent of body area that has been burned.
That is, when sixty percent of the body is burned, death will result sixty percent of the time. However, the age of the victim is an important factor in chances of survival.

The worse fire in the world was in Moscow, Russia 1570, over 200,000 perished.
The most frequent source of fatal fires is lit cigarettes.
The deadliest place for fires is in the home.

Nine women patients at a mental institution in Cleveland, Ohio, died in 1933 in a fire that consumed the building where they were housed.
Although the fire was discovered in plenty of time and the patients led to safety, they apparently found the night air too cold - so they ran back inside to get warm by the fire.
