War Fatalities

A short look at some wartime accidents:

The USS Shark, a submarine, torpedoed and sank the Arisa Maru on October 24, 1944. It was a japanese ship carrying prisoners of war; 1,785 POWs were killed.
The USS Sealion, a submarine, torpedoed and sank the Enoura Maru on September 12, 1944. It was a Japanese POW transport ship; more than 1,000 POWs from Australia and Great Britain were killed.
Allied planes sank the Oryoku Maru on December 15, 1944; more than 900 POWs were killed.
The USS Barb, a submarine, torpedoed and sank the Shinyo Maru on September 7, 1944; at least 668 POWs were killed.
George Preddy, a U.S. Army Air Force ace in World War II, shot down twenty-six German planes before he was accidentally killed by American anti-aircraft flak.
Schaffhausen, a town in neutral Switzerland, was accidentally bombed by U.S. aircraft on April 1, 1944; fifty people were killed in the attack, for which the town was compensated $3.2 million in damages by the U.S.
The USS Tag, a submarine, was sunk by its own torpedo on October 24, 1944, after sinking twenty-four Japanese ships in less than a year. Most of the crew died in the accident. Another U.S. submarine, the USS Tullibee, was thought to have been sunk by its own torpedo on March 30,1944, with only one survivor.
During World War II, the USS Extractor, a Navy salvage ship, was accidentally torpedoed and sunk by the USS Guardfish, a submarine; six men were killed. This was the only incident of its type in that war for the U.S.
