TO THE K-9 OFFICER
AND HIS PARTNER.




        It takes a special kind of person to be the partner of a K-9.  One willing to work long hours and being called in to work at all hours of the night to chase or flush out the bad guy.  It takes a complete  and unconditional trust in your partners judgment, when he say's it's there, it's there.  Failure to follow his instructions and indications could result in the drugs or explosives getting past you, the bad guy getting away, or worse, the bad guy getting you or your human backup.  The loss of a K-9 is always felt by his partner as if it were his closest family member,  and some K-9's have been known to die soon after their partners were killed in the line of duty, the bonds are that close.
 
 


 
K-9 "JACCO"


   ON 23 OCT 1997 AT 1:45 a.m. EST, K-9 "JACCO" DIED OF COMPLICATIONS FROM AN INJURY HE HAD RECIEVED EARLIER THAT DAY IN THE LINE OF DUTY. "JACCO" WAS A THREE YEAR OLD BELGIUM MALENOIS AND HAD ONLY BEEN ON THE ROAD FOR A YEAR. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT HE AND HIS HANDLER WERE WORKING ON A COUNTER-NARCOTICS TASK FORCE. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS HANDLER AND MANY FRIENDS. JACCO, WE WILL MISS YOU.

**Authors note, I was there at the time of the incident and can assure you all was done that could be done by human hands to save Jacco's life. In the end it was left in the hands of God and He saw fit to take such a fine officer and make him His own. Jacco died doing what he loved to do, looking for narcotics. His partner is doing much better now, a few months after the incident but is still saddend by his loss as we all are. Take care Jacco......




THE CREATION OF MAN'S BEST FRIEND


God summomed a beast from the field, and He said,

"Behold man is crated in My image. Therefore, adore him. You shall protect him in the wilderness, shepherd his flocks, watch over his children, accompany him wherever he may go--even into civilization. You shall be his companion, his ally, and his slave.

To do these things, I endow you with the instincts uncommon to other beasts: Faithfulness, Devotion, and Uderstanding, surpassing those of man himself. Lest it impair your courage, you shall never forsee your death. Lest it impair your loyalty, you shal be blind to the faults of man. Lest it impair your understatnding, you are denied the power of words. Speak to your master only through your mind andyour honest eyes.

Walk by his side; sleep in his doorway; ward off his enemies; carry his burden; share his affliction; love and comfort him. And in return for this, man will fulfill your needs and wants--which shall ve only food, shelter and affection.

So be a friend of man. Guide him through the perils along the way to this land I have promised him. This shall be your destiny and your immortality."

The dog heard and was content.

A PRAYER FROM "MANS BEST
FRIEND"


Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more
grateful for kindness than the loving heart of mine.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for I shall lick your hand between
blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the
things you would have me to learn.

Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated
animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements.  I ask no great glory just
the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.

Keep my bowl filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer
thirst.  Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp, play and do your
bidding, to walk by your side and stay ready, willing and able to protect
you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, my friend, when I am very old and no longer enjoy good health,
hearing, and sight, do not make any heroic efforts to keep me going.  I
cannot tolerate pain, as I am sure you cannot.  Please see that my trusting
life is taken gently.

I shall leave this earth knowing that my fate was always safest in your
hands.

  My eyes are your eyes
   to watch you and protect you
    and yours...

  My ears are your ears
   to hear and detect evil
    minds in the dark...

    My nose is your nose
    to scent the invader of
     your domain...

        And so you may live,
       my life is also
         yours.....
