Profile:
Mike Atherton, the former England captain, has established himself as one of best opening batsman in the modern game. Possessing an excellent technique, he is equally at home against pace and spin. His excellent footwork allows him to play a full range of shots, and although not a rapid scorer, he is also difficult to tie down. His strongest asset is his concentration, and his wicket is probably the most prized of any of the current England side by opponents. A good fielder, his leg spin bowling has declined and is seldom used.
