N.B. I advise you save the game at regular intervals during this process i.e.
each time you complete a section, and definitely when you complete a successful
breed. This way, if you fail to get the chocobo you want from the mating, you can
simply reset and try again.
Firstly, You will be needing a lot of money and many Items to complete the process.
1. You'll need lots of money for this, so go and have as
many battles as you can bear, to bring in the cash. Look at the 'Easy money'
section (under construction) for the best place to go to get money through battles.
2. Now you'll need the Chocobo Lure. You should already have this from disc 1,
but if you somehow managed to get this far without it, its available from Chocobo
Billy in the stables at the ranch for 2000 gil.
3. - you will be needing at least four, if not
the full 6 stables which are available. Go to the Chocobo Ranch on the east side
of the Eastern Continent, and talk to the man in the house there.
Choose the option "look after my chocobo's", and rent the stables. Repeat this
until you have the required number for your purpose.
4. - In order to mate the chocobos sucessfully, you will need
a least three Carob nuts. These cannot be bought from anyone, but can be stolen
from some of the monsters which roam the grasslands around Bone Villiage, and
around the Chocobo sage's house. The monsters are called Brachioladus, and work
individualy, but you will come across a number of other species in the areas stated.
5. - you will also be needing at least one Zeio nut. These
can be stolen from the Goblins on Goblin Island. This is situated in the North east
of the map, and is the most northanly, forrested, island in the small chain.
6. - Now you need the animals themselves. There are three
types of chocobo which can be captured which you need. These are; 1 walking
chocobo, 1 running chocobo, and 1 dashing chocobo. Each of these are captured
from different areas of the map. Capture one chocobo from each of the following:
The island of Mideel - the tracks are on the western tip of the island.
The Northern Continent - the tracks are in the snow on the far western penincula.
The gold saucer - The tracks are to the south east of the saucer, near the coast.
7. - At many stages, you will find that your chocobos will
need feeding to improve their skills for racing (see below). The best food for the
job are Sylkis greens. These can only be got from the Chocobo sage. They cost
5000 gil each, and this is where most of the money will be going. In my own experience,
I found that they work best when used in sets of 10 (50,000gil a time!!). The more
you feed, the better the Chocobo and the better your chances of winning the races
you need to get their levels up. I advise you stock up on Sylkis greens before you
start the breeding and racing simply because its easier than constantly returning
to the chocobo sage's house every time you need to feed your chocobos.
Now you have what you need - so get to work!
8. - Now move the Walking and the Running
chocobos into the stables. Note that the gender of the chocobos is not determined
until they are put into the stables and you are asked to name them. Seeing as
this could have a big effect on the process, save the game before moving each
of them in to the stables. You want the walking chocobo to be the male, and the running
chocobo to be the female. Reset if you don't get the ender you want for each chocobo.
9. - Now you need to race the chocobos you have in the stables
up to a good standard. The higher their racing class, the better your chance of
getting the chocobos you want when they're bred. To do this, simply go to the
gold saucer chocobo races, and register with the girl in the top left of the
screen. As mentioned above, if you have trouble winning, then feed your chocobos
up a bit, they'll get there in the end.
10. - You should now have the walking (male), and one
running (female) chocobo, and they should both be of a decent racing class. The
Running chocobo should be class 'A', but it may be hard to get the walking chocobo
up to that standard. Don't worry, it is possible to to get the right chocobo with a class 'B'
male (walker). If you do have the above, mate the two and give them one of the Carob
nuts. You should end up with a new green chocobo. You want this to be of the
opposite sex to your running chocobo. If not reset and try again. This enables
you to get over mountains and small cliffs.
11. - You will now need to waste some game time to let
your chocobos recover from mating. The best way to do this is to race the new green
chocobo, getting it to class 'A'. Again, you may need to feed it up, mainly to
improve its intellegence. This is needed anyway to ensure you of the chocobos
you need in the future.
12. - When the green chocobo is up to class 'A', and
you've wasted enough time SAVE THE GAME. Then go back to the chocobo ranch and mate the green chocobo
with the running chocobo. Give the pair a carob nut, and you should get a blue
chocobo, which can cross rivers and shallows. You want this to be of the
opposite sex to the green chocobo you produced it from. Repeat the feeding and
racing process until this too is a class 'A' chocobo.
13. - When the time has been wasted, Mate the green
and the blue chocobos, giving them......... yes, a carob nut! This time you should get
a black chocobo which can cross both mountains and shallow water. At this stage it
doesn't matter what gender the new black chocobo is, so just concentrate on getting
it up to class 'A'.
14. - at this stage, you should still have the
dashing chocobo in the free pen outside the ranch. Bring it in, nameing it and making
sure that it is of the opposite gender to the black chocobo. Feed it up and again
race it to class 'A'.
15 - To complete the last breeding, you will first have to clear out one of the stables. Its up to you which of the chocobos you let go, as long as you are left with the Black, and the yellow Dashing chocobo. With the Black and the Yellow dashing chocobo both at class 'A', and at least one empty stable, mate the pair, this time using the Zeio nut you got from the goblins. With any luck you will now be the proud owner of the GOLD CHOCOBO!
Good luck with the breeding and enjoy the secrets they allow you to get to.
