General Secretary and Leader of Burma's National League for Democracy Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

Brief Biography and Background of Aung San Suu Kyi


Mrs. Suu Kyi was borned in June 19, 1945 at Rangoon, Burma,as the daughter of national leader General Aung San (July 19, 1947 - General Aung San, Suu Kyi's father and the architect of Burma's independence from Britain, is assassinated in Rangoon along with six members of his pre-independence cabinet. January 4, 1948 - Burma becomes independent.) and Daw Khin Kyi. She was educated in Rangoon until the age of 15 years old.


In 1960, she was accompanied with her mother to Delhi on her mother's appointment as Burmese ambassador to India and Nepal. She continued her study at Delhi University in politics.


During 1964-67, she completed her BA in philosophy, politics and economics, from St. Hugh's College, Oxford University (elected Honorary Fellow in 1990).


Mrs. Suu Kyi has been assigned for Assistant Secretary, Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, United Nations Secretariat, New York positon in 1969-1971.


In 1972, Suu Kyi has been worked as Research Officer, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bhutan. She married to Dr. Michael Aris, a British scholar.

Suu Kyi gave birth of sons Alexander in London (1973) and Kim (1977)in Oxford.

During 1985-1986, she has been visited to Japan as Visiting Scholar, Center of Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University.


In 1987, Suu Kyi went to Fellow, Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla.
