AN EXPLANATION OF THE TWENTY CLAUSES

Clause 4.13 - CONTROL OF NONCONFORMING PRODUCT

General Comments

As stated previously, Clause 4.10 of ISO9001/9002 requires that you perform various test and inspection tasks, as relevant to the services or products that you supply.

Clause 4.12 requires that you identify the status of inspected goods or services. One possible status was

Clause 4.13 requires that you adequately control all such failures. (i.e. all non-conforming products & services)

Clause 4.13.1 - General

this clause requires that you have procedures which ensure that nonconforming product is prevented from unintended use. The procedures must identify how the nonconforming items are identified (e.g. how they are labelled or otherwise marked), how they are recorded, how they are segregated (where possible), and how they are disposed of (or re-worked, etc)

In addition, the procedures must identify how the relevant functions are notified (e.g. how the manufacturing section, Customer or supplier is informed of the mistake, etc)

Clause 4.13.2 - Review & Disposition of Nonconforming Product

This Clause requires that you identify the person(s) with authority to decide the fate of the nonconforming items, and that the procedures identify how the review of the nonconforming items is conducted and recorded.

A number of possible fates are permitted for nonconforming items, including :

Whichever course is followed, it must be approved by an authorised person and recorded. This information should form part of the Corrective & Preventive Actions system (Clause 4.14)

Only where specified in a contract with the customer, the use of re-worked or conceded items must be reported to the customer.

Any repaired or re-worked items must be re-inspected afterwards. This should be specified in the relvant procedures.
