Oklahoma City Claims SAC Cup
Oklahoma City claimed its third consecutive SAC Cup, the award that honors overall success of the athletic programs of Sooner Athletic Conference Schools.
The Stars captured league titles in women's basketball, baseball, softball, women’s golf and men’s golf.
Points are awarded based on final regular season league standings with the champion winning 50 points for its school. The points decrease in increments of five (45 points for second, 40 for third, etc.) through the standings with bonus points for national finishes. A team can gain as many as 60 points if it wins both the conference and NAIA titles. Only the top six sports are counted for each school. Only sports with at least five SAC schools competing were included.
Oklahoma City finished with 328 points, followed by Oklahoma Baptist with 285, Oklahoma Christian with 268, Southern Nazarene with 260, Wayland Baptist with 240, Lubbock Christian with 185, Northwestern Oklahoma State with 175, Science & Arts of Oklahoma with 156 and John Brown with 150.
OBU won four conference titles - men's and women's cross country and women's track. No other school had more than one conference title in the 12 recognized sports. Southern Nazarene won in men’s soccer, Northwestern won in women’s soccer, and Oklahoma Christian won in men’s basketball.
The SAC claimed a total of four NAIA championships. Oklahoma City won national titles in women’s golf and baseball; John Brown won in men’s basketball and the OBU women won in indoor track. Indoor track is not among the recognized sports in the SAC Cup.
In 2004-2005, the Sooner Athletic Conference boasted 130 All-Americans, 34 All-America honorable mentions and 94 All-America Scholar Athletes.
