Chapter 19

They walked down the hallwall into the stair well and proceeded to search this hall as well.

"She wouldn't be gone if you had stayed with her," Brooke said under her breath.

"Excuse me?" Taylor said.

"I just said that if had been watching her, this never would have happened. She would have been safe wih us," Brooke told him.

"You have some nerve, Brooke. How dare you say that?" Taylor asked, shocked by Brooke's comment.

"It's true! I speak the truth. If you don't like it, don't hang around me," she told him.

"That's it! Enough! This isn't going to find Elaine any quicker!" Isaac told them both, stepping between them.

"Fine, whatever," Brooke replied.

"Oh yeah, like we really need to get into this again!" Taylor said.

"Okay, that's it! Brooke gets my muzzle!" Zac stated.

"Bite me, Zac," Brooke told him.

"No thanks, I'm not in the mood for a cold, bitter taste in my mouth," he smiled.

"That's it! I've had enough! I'm over it! We're all in the wrong, okay? We've all screwed up! We've messed up and are now paying for it, okay? Now everyone shut up before he hears us!" Isaac commanded. The others became dead quiet. They walked silently in a double line, with Isaac and Taylor in front and Brooke and Zac behind them.

"Wait!" Isaac said, holding his arms out, stopping the others.

"What?" Taylor whispered.

"Do you smell something?" Isaac asked them in a soft voice.

All four of them sniffed the air.

"Yeah, it smells like something is burning," Brooke answered. "Oh my god!"

The four of them got down on their hands and knees and started looking for smoke. They spotted it seeping through one of the doors donw the hallway.

"Go find a fire extinguisher or hose or something!" Isaac commanded. Zac ran off to find one. Isaac, Brooke, and Taylor struggled to get the door open. The door knob and door was still cool.

Zac came running down the hallway with a fire extinguisher.

"Why aren't the sprinklers coming on?" Brooke panicked.

"Come on! On the count of three all four of us ram the door. One, two, three,"Taylor said. The four of them rammed the door. The door flew open and suddenly they were engulfed with smoke. Brooke dropped down to her hands and knees out of reflex.

"We need to get out of here!" she exclaimed.

"Zac, Tay, go with Brooke ino the stairwell and stay there. I'll meet you guys in a minute there," Isaac said, startign to go into the smoke filled room. Taylor grabbed him.

"You're crazy, Ike! You can't go in there!" Taylor yelled at him.

"Tay, let go of me and go with Zac and Brooke," he choked. "Now!"

Zac grabbed Taylor. "Come on, Tay! We gotta go!" Zac coughed.

"Jordan Taylor Hanson, move it, NOW!" Isaac commanded.

Zac and Taylor followed Brooke on their hands and knees. Isaac glanced back at them for only a brief second as he ran completely into the room. "I love you, guys," he whispered.

He quickly found the flames in the bathroom. Isaac choked on the smoke. He pulled the pin on the fire extinguisher and released its substance onto the flames. Within a minute, the fire was completely out. The smoke was still ever-so-present and his eyes and lungs screamed from the poison. He dropped to the floor, but by this point the smoke had taken over every last bit of the room. He could barely see and was forced to feel around with his hands as he crawled. He made it to the door leading out of the room. He stood up.

"Wait a minute," he thought. "We forced the door open. Why is it closed?"

He played with the doorknob. It turned. He pushed onto the door but it didn't budge.

"What the hell?" he thought. He put all his weight into opening the door, but it still refused to move. His strength was decreasing rapidly. The smoke was taking over his entire body. He banged on the door and yelled for help. He hoped that the others could hear him. He gagged on the smoke as it fully engulfed his lungs. He grew light headed and with one last pound on the door, he collapsed onto the floor of the room.
