28 JUNE 1998

PARKPOP FESTIVAL and AFTERPARTY - DEN HAAG, Holland

Only 4 dates in 3 and a half weeks, that's not much.... so we were very anxious to see what the day would bring. The only announced gig of the day was at the annual Parkpop Festival, where Andrew and his band were sceduled to play at 14.05 hours in the afternoon..... and it wasn't very impressive to be honest. Backed by the same band as last year (exept for another new bass player) Andrew played a pretty lame set, but surprisingly 4 new songs were performed. I can only remember the names of 3 though; The Hardest Thing, Rememories and Bloody Champagne.

The show started with a new song; The Hardest Thing, followed by Too Far Underground. Insecuriosity followed that. The performance during these 3 songs was boring, to say the least, but then suddenly the band lightened up and the show got better as they went along. Other songs played were: Supercool, Overneath, Starstruck, Rememories, Bloody Champagne, No Butter No Oil and the new song I don't know the name of.

It was fun to see how Andrew has grown as a performer. Last year he was a bit shy on the stage, but now he's interacting with the audience a lot and a bit more talkative inbetween songs. Even letting the audience interact during No Butter No Oil!

Overall we weren't impressed though, the shows we saw last year were much better. Then later we found out that Andrew also would be playing at the Parkpop Afterparty and Het Paard. That show was MUCH MUCH better than the one on the festival. The new songs also sounded much better in this intimate atmosphere. The new song Bloody Champagne sounds a lot like Curtis Mayfield' People Get Ready, combined with Come To Me. It isn't one of Andrew's strongest tracks, but it sounded great in this intimate atmosphere. Old songs played were Supercool, Rosey red, No Butter No Oil and Starstruck. Great show... probably the best we've seen so far...

After the show we met the band and we found out that the new bass player is actually guitar player Dustin's brother. They agreed that the show in the afternoon actually wasn't very good. They were tired and especially Justin's brother was struggling with a enormous jetlag. After we talked for a while the band left and we decided to do the same. Let's hope they'll be back soon for a club tour.
